Will New Foursquare App, Push Notifications Boost Engagement?

Foursquare’s 40 million users probably fall into three tiers: “super users,” occasional users and those who’ve downloaded the app and no longer use it. Foursquare won’t say how many of its users are “active.”That’s a general challenge for the company: how to engage casual or lapsed users and boost their frequency.
The company is hoping a new iOS app that emphasizes push notifications will help. Foursquare introduced location-based alerts and notifications into its Android app in August. Now it’s making them the centerpiece of its new iOS app.
Once the darling of early adopters, Foursquare has evolved well beyond its initial “gamification” and “check-in” functionality. The company keeps pushing to make the app more “accessible,” mainstream and “mom-friendly.”
Simultaneously Foursquare is doing some very interesting and sophisticated things with data and location-based recommendations. In many ways there’s a lot more going on under the hood at Foursquare than at competitor Yelp.

Mobile Messaging: Essential Advice For A Successful Mobile Marketing Platform

If you have a roadmap for your mobile marketing initiatives (and you should), it must in almost all cases include a mobile messaging program.
You might be wondering what is the best way to execute on a program or how it fits into the rest of your mobile initiatives. Here are a few essential tips for success in the mobile messaging space…
Messaging Is Important
You likely have a mobile application and mobile website in your plan, but have you included mobile messaging yet?
Mobile messaging is one of the only push-based mobile marketing technologies, meaning that you are not relying on your customer to initiate all communication.
Typically, your customer may need to open the app to engage, or navigate to the mobile website, but once your customer opts into a mobile messaging program, you can control the conversation by sending relevant information when your company or organization has updates.
For instance, let’s say you are a retailer with an upcoming promotion for 25% off all new arrivals f…

The 'New SEO' is Plain Old Marketing

Sometimes moving forward means going all the way back to the beginning. Even if the SEO tricks are dying out the, technical aspects like speed, structure and optimized hierarchy still matter; the definition of SEO isn't shrinking, but expanding.

7 Facts About Nelson Mandela No One Told You!

Nelson Mandela, the great anti-apartheid revolutionary is now dead.
Called the Father of South Africa, Nelson Mandela is regarded as a great leader, a visionary and a philanthropist who went on to become the first Black President of South Africa between 1994 and 1999, and brought in several radical changes which changed the country for ever. He spent 27 years in jail for following his vision and his mission of eradicating apartheid from South Africa and subsequently the whole world. In the year 1993, he received the Nobel Prize for Peace.
He is often termed as South Africa’s Gandhi. He once said to his Indian friend, “You gave us Gandhi, we gave you the Mahatma”. He had great respect for Mahatma Gandhi, and said to be deeply influenced by the Satyagrah movement.
However, great wars are won by giving great sacrifices and Nelson Mandela was no exception. In his fight against the cruel tradition of apartheid and colonialism, he had to cross the border line several times, often putting at st…

New Twitter Board Member Has Used Twitter – Once

If you would like proof that those who are charged with leadership are often not all that aware of what it is they are helping to lead, just take a look at the latest board of director appointee for Twitter (Marjorie Scardino) and her Twitter ‘presence’ as of last night.

Quartz points out

Crazy, right? Not exactly. It turns out that most of Twitter’s other board members also use the service sparingly—that is, the board members who aren’t founders (Jack Dorsey and Evan Williams) or currently running the company (CEO Dick Costolo). Non-executive board members are expected to keep a certain distance from the day-to-day running of a business, but this, perhaps, is taking it to extremes.

Here’s the picture for you.

What’s the takeaway? It’s definitely who you know and not what you know or do. Whether it’s in the Valley or not some things never change. Why should they?

Facebook’s Organic Reach Waning for Marketers So Spend More on Ads Now!

Facebook is doing something for the greater good of those using the service. They are cleaning up the News Feed. How nice, especially when the result of this move is to limit the organic reach of page updates.
AdAge explains what this really means

Facebook is being more blunt about the fact that marketers are going to have to pay for reach.
If they haven’t already, many marketers will soon see the organic reach of their posts on the social network drop off, and this time Facebook is acknowledging it. In a sales deck obtained by Ad Age that was sent out to partners last month, the company states plainly: “We expect organic distribution of an individual page’s posts to gradually decline over time as we continually work to make sure people have a meaningful experience on the site.”

Dadgummit! Facebook is looking to get more ad dollars. Who woulda thunk?
Facebook isn’t exactly hiding the fact either. In a news post they tell us outright

As the dynamic nature of News Feed continues to follow peo…

Google Glass’ 3rd Tour Stop Is Austin, TX, Next Weekend

The Google Glass marketing tour will make its third stop next weekend in Austin, Texas.
The public is invited to get a hands-on experience with Glass and visit with Google’s “Glass guides” to ask questions and learn how Glass works. Google has already done tour stops in Raleigh and Detroit; to get an idea what the events are like, see Jenny Halasz’ photo recap from Raleigh in early October.
One thing Google learned from the Raleigh event is that one day isn’t enough for these tour stops. So Google did a full weekend in Detroit last month, and is doing the same next weekend. The event will run from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on both December 14th and 15th at Brazos Hall in Austin.
Google is asking attendees to RSVP online.

510 Mln Aadhaar Cards Issued, Over 1 Mln Issued Every Day!

Jury is till out on the success of ambitious and controversial UIDAI program headed by Nandan Nilekani. However, if numbers released by Government are to be believed, it sure shows that Indian citizens are lapping it in big numbers.
We looked at total Aadhaar enrollment numbers in the month of May this year – At that time a total of 343 million Aadhar cards were issued. And now as per latest update, the total number of Aadhaar card issuance has reached 510 million.
What it means is nearly 167 million Aadhaar cards have been issues in 6 months, an impressive feat by any yardstick!
According to official press release, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is now generating about 1.1 million Aadhaar cards every day. Keeping that rate in mind, the target of 600 million Aadhaar cards set by Government should be reached in less than 3 months time.

The first Aadhaar card was issued on 29 September 2010. UIDAI issued 80 million Aadhaar numbers in the period up to November 2011, another…

Google Automatically Creates New Orkut Accounts For Any Logged-in Google User That Visits

If you have a Google account — and who among us doesn’t? — you might want to be careful about visiting Google’s other social network, Orkut.
Google is automatically creating new Orkut accounts for anyone that visits while already logged in to a Google account. (Try it yourself if you don’t mind having an Orkut account setup for you.) If you also have a Google+ account, Google will take the data from it (your name and avatar) to auto-populate your new Orkut account.
Frank Strong noticed this a couple days ago; we reached out to Google for comment, but the company hasn’t replied.
Here’s what Google is doing:
If you’re logged in to a Google account and you visit, Google will quickly send you through a couple URL redirects before ultimately dropping you on your new Orkut profile page. That page, as you can see below, has the phrase “accountCreated” in the URL. (You can click to see a larger version.)

Google never asked if I wanted to create an Orkut account; it happened in …
