Facebook Now Number 2 In US Digital Ad Sales, Thanks To Mobile [eMarketer]

In Facebook’s third quarter earnings report this year, the company shared that mobile delivered 49 percent of all ad revenues for the quarter — up from 41 percent in Q2. eMarketer today released its latest report on US digital ad revenue share by company. Due in large part to mobile revenues, Facebook has overtaken Microsoft and Yahoo to claim the number to spot, with 7.4 percent share of net US digital ad dollars in 2013.
Emarketer’s earlier forecast showed Facebook continuing to lag slightly behind Yahoo through this year, however Facebook’s mobile ad business has helped it surge ahead of Yahoo in this latest estimate.
According to eMarketer, Facebook’s improved market share was triggered by the company’s “continued stellar mobile performance, with the potential to open up new inventory via Instagram as well as the announcement to include video ads in the newsfeed.”
Facebook’s mobile ad revenue share in the US jumped from 9 percent in 2012 to 16 percent this year, which it took primari…

Mobile Activity On Xmas Eve 24 Pct. Higher Than Black Friday

Last minute shoppers this holiday season will shift their activity from PCs to mobile devices according to an analysis of retail traffic data xAd. The mobile ad network found that mobile lookups and search activity spiked during Black Friday weekend but were even higher on Xmas Eve, which xAd is calling “mobile eve” (perhaps unfortunately).
The findings show that mobile-retail activity was 24 percent higher, using last year’s data, on Xmas Eve than on Black Friday weekend and so-called Cyber Monday, which this year emerged as the largest single day for e-commerce to date.
This all makes logical sense, as shoppers rush around from store to store trying to find last-minute gifts. What’s more striking, however, is the fact that PC search volumes go the opposite direction and virtually disappear at the last-minute.
The following are two charts created by xAd comparing retail search traffic in mobile and on the PC during the same Black Friday to Xmas time period. The categories examined inclu…

Worst Case Scenario: Target Experiences Data Theft During Holiday Season

It is being reported that Target has been hacked exposing credit card numbers of shoppers starting on Black Friday. If there has ever been a reputation bruiser for a retailer, this is it.
KrebsonSecurity reports

Nationwide retail giant Target is investigating a data breach potentially involving millions of customer credit and debit card records, multiple reliable sources tell KrebsOnSecurity. The sources said the breach appears to have begun on or around Black Friday 2013 — by far the busiest shopping day the year.
According to sources at two different top 10 credit card issuers, the breach extends to nearly all Target locations nationwide, and involves the theft of data stored on the magnetic stripe of cards used at the stores.
Both sources said the breach was initially thought to have extended from just after Thanksgiving 2013 to Dec. 6. But over the past few days, investigators have unearthed evidence that the breach extended at least an additional week — possibly as far as Dec. 15. Ac…

I Know I’m Not Supposed to Laugh But …….

Social media creates some pretty funny stories. This is one of the funnier ones, in my estimation.
Business Insider reports

Forget distracted driving — the new hazard may be distracted walking.
A Taiwanese tourist walking in Melbourne, Australia fell into the icy waters of Port Philip Bay after walking off a pier while checking her Facebook page on her phone, BBC News reports.
The woman, who was not identified, was rescued about 20 minutes later after a witness saw her and alerted police. She was found “floundering in the water” and police did not believe she knew how to swim, according to a statement from Victoria Police.

If you are walking around or driving or doing whatever and you are so distracted that you do something incredibly stupid (like walk off a pier) it’s time to reconsider your social media use.
What do you think about being involved in anything to this point of distraction?

Bitcoin Value Reduced To Half As China Bans New Deposits

Bitcoin enthusiasts have experienced a rude shock yesterday when it lost 50% of its value in an instant. China has decided to block new deposits of Bitcoin, and this news had a ripple effect across the globe as its value came down from $1200 to $550 within few hours.
At the time of writing this post, Bitcoin was trading at $550 at Mt.Gox, which is considered one of the largest Bitcoin exchanges in the world.
People’s Bank Of China which is the central and most powerful state controlled bank in China saw traces of money-laundering in the usage of Bitcoins. Since past two weeks, apprehensions existed that China may regulate or ban its usage considering that then country has very strict policies related to currency flow and money laundering. As of now, there are around 12 million Bitcoins in circulation all over the world, and this major dip in its value may trigger something even bigger.
Like Bitcoin, there are other virtual currencies as well, and all of them took a major hit – Here is a …

What Indians Did On Twitter In 2013 [Twitter Trends]

First Facebook came out with it, then Google followed and now Twitter has come out with their own “What was Hot in 2013” list for India.
Indians are getting active on social media, there is little doubt about that. From the yesteryear Orkut (India was among the top 3 user countries) to Facebook to Twitter, we lap up social media like no one else. And we see the same thing in the year on Twitter in India – what got people in India tweeting in 2013 (till now)
Twitter released data on top trending topics, people and events by mapping conversations of more than 20 mn Indian users. In 2013, people in India used Twitter to discuss sports, politics, television and news events that were both local and global. The country loved tweeting about cricket this year, with some of the top trends including #ThankYouSachin, #IndvsAus and #IPL.
It also provided a platform to share voices for TV shows – programmes such as #BB7, #ThePerfectBachelor and #KoffeeWithKaran ranked highly.
And if you thought people…

Gmail Open Rates Tank but Conversion Soar: Go Figure

Earlier this year, Gmail decided it would be helpful if the tool cataloged all of your incoming email for you, dividing it into 3 separate categories. The home tab features all of the “important” information from individuals. Social messages on tab two and promotional messages under tab three.
For people who use Gmail to process a lot of email probably love the new system. Businesses who send marketing emails. . . not so much.
Look at this chart from a new report by Sailthru:
What we’re looking at is a comparison of open rates on Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2012 vs 2013. They looked at Gmail and Yahoo mail. On both days, Gmail open rates took a significant dive. 12.8% down on Black Friday over last year. That hurts.
Yahoo showed a significant increase, especially on Cyber Monday, so you can’t blame it on general consumer email ennui. No question here, it’s a Gmail problem.
The New York Times says the situation is worse than it seems because Gmail users tend to be more affluent, so it’s a…

Pantene “Labels Against Women” Ad Gets Global Launch After Winning Sandberg’s Recognition

After going viral this month, the Philippines Pantene “Labels Against Women” video ad will be released globally in an online media campaign.
According to a report on AdAge.com, Proctor & Gamble Co. decided to push the ad’s global launch after Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg shared the ad on her Facebook page, helping it earn more than 7.5 million views on YouTube.
The ad highlights the double standard between how women and men are perceived in the workplace. Using a cover of the Tears for Fears song “Mad World”, the ad spotlights a series of professional situations, showing how a man’s behavior is perceived positively, while the same behavior exhibited by a woman is often perceived negatively.
AdAge.com says the ad was initially posted online November 9 and shown on Philippines TV twice, but received a majority of its YouTube views after Sandberg posted the video on her Facebook page earlier this month. Sandberg, a celebrity in the tech world and bestselling author of the book Lean In…

4 Top Facebook Advertising Trends And The Stats Behind Them

As Facebook’s user base keeps growing, the company has continued to pushed its advertising capabilities with new targeting options, creative formats, and mobile opportunities. Marin Software has put some numbers behind what is driving the top advertising trends on Facebook.
The reasons more advertisers are using News Feed ads, mobile targeting, automated ad rotation and Custom Audiences are because each has proven their worth across a number of metrics from click-through rates to conversion rates, according to Marin’s index of more than 100 Facebook advertisers.
News Feed Ads Have Transformed Facebook Ad Performance
Marin saw a 140 percent quarter-over-quarter increase in News Feed advertising in Q3 2013, with the Page post ad being the top converting ad type. Marin data shows News Feed ads attained a 44x higher CTR and a 5x higher conversion rate than right-side display ads in Q3 of 2013.
News Feed CPCs were 67 percent lower and CPAs were down 64 percent compared to right-side ads. As a …

Twitter Launches Conversion Tracking, Now Available Globally

Today, Twitter has announced the global availability of long-awaited conversion tracking capabilities. Conversion tracking gives advertisers better insights into how Twitter ads are driving conversion actions on their sites.
Twitter’s conversion tracking tag captures the impact of users who engaged with Promoted Tweets as well as those who simply viewed a Promoted Tweet, what’s often referred to as a view-through conversion.
In addition to clicks, engagement attribution includes Tweet expands, retweets, replies, favorites and follows. Advertisers can adjust the attribution window for both post-engagement and post-view conversions.

Several advertisers have been testing Twitter’s conversion tracking over the past few months, including retailer Alex and Ani. According to Twitter the retailer was able to generate conversions with a CPA that was 65 percent lower than their target. Ryan Okum, SVP of social media at Live Nation, also said his company was able to achieve lower CPAs with conversi…
