How to Be Authentic in a World of Wannabes

You log on to Facebook. Your wall, as usual, is flooded with updates from your friends. Also people you hardly know but have found their way on your friend list. Yet one thing is common. Almost 80% of these updates throw up photos, opinions and videos of everyone pretending to be someone they are not. […]

Small Business Saturday Reminds Consumers To Shop Local After Black Friday Deals

As consumers flood big brand retailers today searching for Black Friday deals, many small businesses are hitting their social pages to remind shoppers about tomorrow’s Small Business Saturday event.
Originally launched in 2010 by American Express, Small Business Saturday has become a nationally recognized day to help small businesses compete on the biggest shopping weekend of the year.
Tomorrow’s event on November 29 is expected to help generate more than $5.5 billion for small businesses.
According to retail expert and spokesperson for Small Business Saturday Nicole Leinbach-Reyhle consumers spent more than $5.7 billion with the independent merchants last year thanks to the power of Shop Small – an increase of 3.6 percent from 2012.
She expects even more consumers to support tomorrow’s Small Business Saturday event.
“In 2013, more than 346,000 free online tools and materials were accessed by small business owners on ShopSmall.com, and 1,400 Neighborhood Champions – consisting of communiti…

Thanksgiving roundup: YouTube URLs, Vine gets pushy and more

Since this Friday is a holiday (Black Friday is a legal holiday, isn’t it), I thought I’d do my weekly tidbit roundup a little early.
Putting the YOU back in YouTube
YouTube is making it possible to change your YouTube user name to something more fitting for your brand. This is huge because so many people didn’t give a lot of thought to the name they created when they signed up. My YouTube name, TVCyn, was created when I was working as a TV reporter. Now, it’s a little off the mark and not intuitive for those who know my by my full name or often used nickname.
Unfortunately, I don’t qualify for a change because only channels with more than 500 followers are eligible and of course, you can only pick a name that isn’t already in use.
Vine gets pushy
Worried about missing a terrific Vine video? Worry no more. Vine just added push notifications for favorites.
Click the star in the corner of any Vine vidder profile to add them to your favorites list. Then, when that vidder uploads a new Vine, yo…

10-Year-Old “Karissa The Destroyer” Punks Gamers In Marketing Stunt

We’ve seen many a marketing stunt in our time and, done well, they never get old.
After all, what’s more fun than getting a bunch of people to believe something that’s not actually true and then revealing it all? Especially when it involves a cute, ten-year-old girl who is a gaming prodigy. Or so everyone thought.
Earlier this month, GameStop, working with The Marketing Arm/TMA Entertainment, set up a stunt in a California store which pitted ten-year-old Karissa, who became known as #KarissaTheDestroyer, against some of the best gamers in the area.
Complete with age appropriate wise-assitude, Karissa took down one gamer after another as onlookers couldn’t believe what they were watching.

Of course, the whole thing was a stunt, and last Friday, a campaign video revealed the fact that pro gamer Liquid’KDJ was actually behind the controls. The reveal video is approaching 750,000 views.

Over the course of the stunt, many questioned the validity of Karissa’s game playing skills and Gawker’s gam…

Why Apple Is Suddenly Poised To Take On Facebook

Last week’s news that Apple was opening up its mobile ad netowrk, iAd, to programmatic buying through partnerships with leading ad tech firms was a huge step for the little ad platform that could — and should be a much bigger player in mobile advertising that it currently is.
Accordant Media, Adelphic, AdRoll, GET IT Mobile, MediaMath, Ruicon, Tapsense, and The Trade Desk joined as launch partners. Via Apple APIs, the firms will be able to automate ad buys as well as reporting across more than 250,000 iOS apps.
IAd has failed to capture significant market share since it launched in 2012 with a strategy aimed at attracting big brands with big budgets. EMarketer estimates iAd will account for just 3.3 percent of the U.S. mobile ad market this year — dwarfed by Google which controls nearly half and Facebook which is expected to hold onto just over 15 percent of the market. The move to programmatic signals a major pivot for Apple, and one that could finally allow it to seriously compete wit…

From CMO To President: Taking The Reins At Domino’s Pizza

In October of this year, after serving six years as CMO, Russell Weiner was named President of Domino’s Pizza USA.
During his tenure as CMO, Weiner led marketing, brand leadership, and product innovation for the world’s second largest pizza company, and was responsible for helping reinvent 80 percent of the brand’s menu – a change that resulted in record-setting sales in 2010.
He oversaw the creation of Domino’s “pizza theater” store design, the development of its new logo, and numerous digital marketing and social media innovations that have generated more than $8 billion in retail sales.
In 2008, Weiner was named one of Brandweek’s top ten marketers. Two years later, he was awarded Brandweek’s Marketer of the Year in the restaurant category. He also has both Emmy and Effie award-winning television commercials to his credit, and was listed in Advertising Age magazine’s top 40 Under 40 in 2007.
Prior to joining Domino’s, Weiner led the marketing for Pepsi’s $14 billion North American cola…
