Infographic: The Evolution Of The Marketing Department From “Push” To “Pull”

Long gone are the days when marketing departments could just “push” whatever they wanted to customers. Consumers are actively seeking out and receiving product information through search engines and social media. Half of shoppers they’re better informed about products than store associates.
The folks at Adecco have made an infographic with some stats on the “push-to-pull” shift that has been happening, from the shift in media consumed, to shopping habits, the importance of social and how the marketing job market is playing catch-up. Most digital marketers say they lack formal training and learn on the job.

Top 20 Most Shared Super Bowl Ads Of All Time: The Force Is Strong With Volkswagen

Video marketing firm Unruly has assembled a list of the top 20 most shared Super Bowl ads of all time.
Volkswagen has the most appearances of any brand on the list. The automobile company took four of the top 20 spots, including the No. 1 ranking for its “The Force” video which generated 5.24 million shares.
Unruly’s data is based on the number of shares each video has received on Twitter, Facebook and within the “blogosphere.” Of the top 20 Super Bowl ads, eight represent the automobile industry. Food and beverage brands earned five spots, divided between Budweiser, Doritos and M&M.
Three of the top 20 videos were movie trailers, with Universal’s “Fast and Furious 6,” “Fast Five,” along with Paramount’s “Star Trek: Into the Darkness” all making the list.

Strategizing Direct-To-Consumer E-Commerce: When Should Manufacturers Dive In?

Over the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to help a few prominent manufacturers strategize direct-to-consumer e-commerce experiences while balancing their relationships with their retail partners. Entering the engagements, my thought was that any brand should strive to capture their sales through direct channels in order to maximize margins.
But politics are fascinating in the manufacturer/retailer ecosystem; and as a result, the economics don’t always make sense. By the end, I came to realize that there’s a time and a place to sell direct, but there are some very particular cases in which the value of the retail relationship outweighs the incremental margin.
It all comes down to one question: what is the purpose of your website? If the purpose is to sell product, then own the sales process. If the purpose is to educate, then embrace your retail partners and own the education. It’s very difficult to do both effectively.

82% of Companies Ignore Branding Goals When Interacting With Customers

Here’s something that will make you step back and look at your own branding and customer experience strategies. Only 18% of companies provide a customer experience based on their branding strategies. In other words, if a company runs a major ad campaign boasting a personal frustration free experience, it’s unlikely that its customer support and sales staff are taking a blind bit of notice.

This all goes back to being congruent in your marketing. As I’ve said before, the experience you provide customers must be congruent across all of your different marketing channels: TV, radio, print, search, social etc. It’s not enough to just make sure you appear to be congruent, you have to make sure that every employee is on the same page. If you claim to “try harder” then you’d better walk the walk!

Now, Buy Tata Docomo Connections Online; Sim Card Delivered At Door Step!

One of the things that always surprised me was that even though online recharge of prepaid packs or bill payments for mobile phones is done online routinely, not a single telecom operator offered new connections online.
One of the reasons could have been because of KYC and other documents that consumer needs to submit at the time of the connection. But again, that issue could have been easily resolved by getting the paperwork at the time of delivery. There could have been other ways as well to solve that problem.
But for whatever reasons, none of the operators seem to have a facility to buy new connections online (though in 2010, Vodafone had announced such a facility, I don’t think they pursued with it). All of them just have a form available online that could be filled by interested party, and representatives get in touch with them offline.

Microsoft Launches Academia Accelerator For College Students

Pinterest has snagged the bronze from email. New data from social sharing service ShareThis shows that for the first time, Pinterest outpaced email to become the third most popular sharing channel in the fourth quarter of 2013.
While sharing via email declined 11 percent year-over-year, Pinterest shares increaed 58 percent, making it the fastest growing sharing channel in 2013. Most of that growth was driven by women, who account for 56.76 percent of social shares across all channels and 57.63 percent of shares to Pinterest.
“The fact that Pinterest, which is still relatively young compared to the other social channels, has surpassed email, which has been a sharing tool for decades, is just one example of how quickly consumer preferences and habits are constantly changing,” says ShareThis.
Midwesterners shared via Pinterest more than consumers in other regions of the US. Overall, Northeasterners share more than every other region, yet they are the least likely to share via Pinterest, pre…

Midwestern Sharers Preferred Pinterest and Other Interesting ShareThis Facts

When someone views your content, be it a blog post, video or image, that’s a wonderful thing. When someone shares your content with one other person by email, that’s terrific. But when someone shares your content with their entire social media circle on Twitter, Facebook or Pinterest – that’s the golden ticket.
Sharing buttons have become so commonplace that I don’t thing we properly appreciate their place in the internet eco-system. When someone shares, it’s an implied recommendation from one friend to another. We all know how people respond to recommendations from friends. (Winning!)
And, thanks to sharing buttons, people discover content they might never have seen otherwise. I can’t search for something I didn’t know existed. But when one of my Twitter pals posts a link to a site that combines food and fandom – I’m there. I never would have looked for it but I’m so glad I found it.

Facebook Adds Trending Conversation List to Sidebar

It’s time for another change to your Facebook feed but this one might actually be a good thing. It’s called Trending and it’s what you’d expect – a list of trending topics from all over Facebook.
The topic list will appear in the right sidebar at the top. Interesting placement because it will push sponsored ads down a few inches. In the example Facebook supplied, the next box down is “People You May Know” so I assume ads are under that?

Facebook says this topic list will be personalized based on things you’re interested in as well as what’s hot on the site as a whole. In addition to the topic, there’s a brief statement of why the word or phrase is trending. I like that.
Click on one of the topics and you get a Trending page which lists “the most interesting posts from your friends or Pages that are talking about that particular topic.”
Pages! They said Pages! Facebook is actually going to allow regular people to read what a business posted on Facebook. Incredible.
