You’ve read all the guidelines. You’ve hired experts to determine the morally correct and righteous path. You’ve watched the endless hours of Matt Cutts videos on YouTube. You pay experts thousands of dollars a month to make sure your search efforts are optimized safely and accurately. You work within the confines of the assumed moral high ground of the company that doesn’t do evil. You’ve spent countless hours analyzing content for trends in interest to make sure your information matches searcher intent. You have invested heavily in technology to help monitor positions, have spent what seems like an eternity staring down reports to make sure you have done the right thing. You walk tall with the knowledge that you have chosen the correct path, knowing those that cheat may not be caught, but at least you are doing the right thing. And then you get hit with the proverbial sucker punch — ads infiltrating natural listings in a little love fest I like to call, “commercial creep.” Unnatural Li…
Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner has found Google in violation of Canada’s privacy rights for the use of sensitive health history in remarketing campaigns. The finding comes after an investigation spurred by a Canadian man who complained that his private health information was being used by Google to retarget him with ads for sleeep apnea devices after he visited sites with information about those devices. In the process of the investigation, Canada’s privacy watchdog also found Google’s automated ad review system to have “demonstrable shortcomings”. As a result, Google has agreed to overhaul the system by June 2014. For more on this case and the potential ramifications for advertisers read the full story on our sister site, Search Engine Land.
The major search engines offer insight into what they look for in a website. These guidelines are useful for determining how search engine-friendly a website is, and should become a vital reference when planning, optimizing, or evaluating a site.
Matt Cutts decided his next 30 day challenge would be to cause chaos and angst in the SEO community by announcing the demise of guest blogging as a tactic for getting backlinks. It’s a lengthy post, with lots of justifications for the move, but boils down to this:
“So stick a fork in it: guest blogging is done; it’s just gotten too spammy. In general I wouldn’t recommend accepting a guest blog post unless you are willing to vouch for someone personally or know them well. Likewise, I wouldn’t recommend relying on guest posting, guest blogging sites, or guest blogging SEO as a linkbuilding strategy.”
According to my Twitter stream, just about every SEO I know was in favor of the move. Which goes to show the high caliber of SEOs I happen to know. As a blogger, I was also grateful to see this move. Why? Because I’ve grown tired of the gazillion guest post pitches I receive every day. Seriously, it’s become worse than the paid link spam emails. Take this one, totally unsolicited:

Or you would use the mobile app, if you have installed one. There’s an alternate way as well. You may consider installing search shortcuts on the home screen of your mobile phone and they will help you perform searches on your favorite website with fewer steps.
Search your favorite websites with a tap
Let’s dive right into an example. Open the Safari browser on your iPhone (or iPad) and click here to open the search shortcut for Wolfram Alpha. A pop-up dialog will open but since we are installing the shortcut, hit the Cancel button to close that dialog. Now tap the Share icon in Safari and choose “Add to Home Screen” to add that search shortcut to your home screen. The next time you want to search Wolfram on your phone, tap the Wolfram shortcut available on your home screen, enter the search terms and i…
