Facebook is set to purchase ProtoGeo Oy, the Helsinki, Finland-based company behind Moves fitness app, announced the start-up in a blog post. The latest app to join the Facebook portfolio, Moves tracks user’s daily activity on iPhone and Android phones. According to the company, the Moves app has been downloaded more than 4 million times since launching in January 2013.
The acquisition gets Facebook into the booming fitness tracking market and allows it to bypass the need for development of a separate wearable.
Research firm Canalys says 16 million smart bands shipped in 2013 and estimates that number will grow to 23 million in 2015. The Moves app allows users to track their fitness activity by keeping their phones in their pocket or even in a bag and plots routes on a map without having to turn on the app.

Facebook Passes 1 Billion Mobile Users, Beats Expectations With $2.5 Billion In Revenue

Facebook continued its expectation-beating winning streak, announcing today $2.5 billion in revenue and earnings of 31 cents a share for the first quarter of 2014. Analysts were expecting $2.36 billion in revenue with earnings of 24 cents a share. In the first quarter last year, Facebook reported $1.46 billion in revenue and 12 cents a share.
Though top-line revenue was down slightly compared to the company’s $2.59 billion fourth quarter, the total beat expectations for the seventh quarter in a row, or every time since the company’s 2012 IPO.
Facebook reported $2.27 billion in advertising revenue, an 82% increase over last year at this time. Mobile ad revenue led the gains — kicking in 59% percent of the total — continuing the desktop-to-mobile balance shift that first tipped in mobile’s favor last quarter at 53%.
In after-hours trading, Facebook shares, which closed down 2.65% today, are trending higher and have made up all of their earlier loss.

Facebook CTRs, comments and shares are all up; so why are marketers so unhappy?

It’s not just me this time. Facebook Page owners from every size and type of business are talking about how Facebook simply isn’t working for them anymore. Likes have slowed. Posts don’t show up in the newsfeed. Ads don’t convert.
Adobe says we’re wrong. According to the new Adobe Digital Index Q1 2014 Social Intelligence Report, “Facebook is back at the top of the mountain.”
I wouldn’t usually question a source like Adobe. They did put in the effort, analyzing over 250 billion Facebook ad impressions and 226 billion posts. So, I’m sure the numbers are correct – but I still find them hard to believe.
Maybe I’m missing something?
The chart on the right does show something we’ve all been complaining about – likes are dropping. It’s not a huge drop off and it’s still the lion’s share of engagement but there’s a drop off YOY.
What we lost in Likes we gained in Comments and Shares. This is interesting because it takes more effort to comment and share. To me, both of those are worth more than a …

How to Receive Files in your Google Drive from Anyone

A school teacher wants to have a public drop box (not Dropbox) where students can upload homework assignments. A recruiter wants to have an online form where job applicants can upload their resumes. A news organization may need a public drop box where people can upload files anonymously.
Google Forms would have been a perfect solution here but unfortunately you cannot upload files to Google Drive through Forms.
The other option is to have a shared folder inside Google Drive but there are limitations. One, you need a Gmail Account and should be invited by the folder owner to upload files in a shared folder. Second, all collaborators can view and even remove files that have been uploaded in a shared folder on Google Drive.

Receive Files in Google Drive with Forms
What you can do is create a regular web form (written in HTML and CSS) and then use Google Apps Script to post the content of this form into Google Drive.
Before diving into the implementation, take a look at this sample form. When …

Adobe Report: Facebook’s Ad Business Is Showing Continued Growth

The foundations of Facebook’s advertising business appear very solid according to Adobe’s first quarter Social Intelligence Report.
Clicks on Facebook ads, ad impressions and click through rates are all soaring, both year over year and quarter over quarter. Clicks are up 70% (YoY) and 48% (QoQ), ad impressions 40% and 41% and click through rates 160% and 20%.
That’s good news for the social network, which will announce its first quarter earnings later today. The news is also positive for brands trying to reach Facebook’s 1.25 billion users with marketing messages. Adobe reports that the cost-per-click rate on ads dropped this quarter — down 2% YoY and 11% since the holiday-spending fueled final quarter of 2013.
The Facebook ad data was the top headline from Adobe Digital Index’s quarterly snapshot of the social media industry released Tuesday. Download it in full here (PDF). Adobe, which bills the report as the industry’s most comprehensive analysis, bases it on aggregated and anonymous …
