Top eBay Affiliate Sentenced To 5 Months In Prison For Wire Fraud

eBay’s top-earning affiliate, Shawn Hogan, has been sentenced to five months in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of wire fraud, Business Insider reported this morning. Hogan must pay a fine of $25,000 and will remain on supervised release for three years after his prison term is completed.
The case traces back to 2006, when the FBI began pursuing Hogan and Brian Dunning, eBay’s number two affiliate, on suspicion of violating eBay’s affiliate terms of service with a cookie-stuffing scheme that gave the affiliates credit for sales that came, not after users clicked on their affiliate links, but from computers that happened to have cookies dropped on them by widgets Hogan and Dunning created. Court documents showed Hogan reaped $28 million in affiliate commissions from eBay.
Hogan and Dunning reportedly claimed eBay knew about the cookie stuffing, but were unable to prove it. Both plead guilty to one count of wire fraud last March.
Hogan, the CEO of Digital Point Solutions,…

Click-Through Rates On Mobile App Ads Reach New Heights, Lead To Record Downloads

In March, click-through rates on ads for mobile adds on iOS devices reached new heights, increasing five fold from the previous year. CTRs on Android were nearly three times higher than a year ago, reports mobile app marketer Fiksu in its latest pulse of the app market.
All those clicks are driving record downloads. While the report doesn’t capture Android downloads, a new high of 7.1 million iOS apps were downloaded daily in March, up 41 percent from a year ago.
Fiksu says that in addition to apps themselves becoming more compelling, programmatic solutions, better targeting and ad formats — app install and video ads along with mobile-specific ads — have helped keep marketing costs manageable even as activity has increased.
Cost per install that could be directly attributed to advertising for iOS apps ticked up just 2 percent from February to $0.97 in March. On Android, which has seen more volatility, cost per install fell 16 percent from February.

The cost per app launch — an indicator o…

YouTube Now Lets Channel Owners Add 3-Second Intros To Their Videos

YouTube has made it possible for channel owners to add a three-second intro to their videos, helping them build a stronger brand presence on Google’s video platform.
To automatically add an intro, users must first upload the video intro to their channel as an unlisted video. Once it’s uploaded, the intro can be selected by clicking “Add a channel branding intro” on the InVideo Programming page. From there, users can choose which of their videos should include the intro.
Users can choose to add an intro to all videos, or videos posted after a specific date, and any intro can be removed or changed at a later time.
YouTube said intros may not be used as ads, sponsorships or product placements, nor should they be used by channels whose videos act as advertisements.

How Playing Devil’s Advocate Will Improve Your Content

When you finish writing something, it’s tempting to sit back in your desk chair and beam — but that won’t result in great content. What you really have to do is take a walk, come back with a fresh eye, and tear your content apart. This is the only way to make content that’s interesting, accurate, and share-worthy.
The best way to develop this critical eye is to play Devil’s Advocate. You might be thinking, “But I just wrote a very accurate, respectable piece of content I’m proud of. Why would I have any criticisms of it if I did my best?” Well, when you wrote the content, you were writing it through your own eyes. You were writing it with the client and audience in mind (hopefully).

And there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, it’s encouraged! But before you pass it along to publishers, you have to take on the perspective of your biggest critic. This will help you find every hole, every vague sentence, every unsupported fact. It’ll make your …

LinkedIn Beats The Street With $473.2MM In Q1 Revenue

Yesterday professional networking site (and now content publishing platform) LinkedIn announced Q1 revenues of $473.2 million. That was up 46 percent from last year. Topline revenue and earnings per share slightly beat consensus analyst estimates.
Its guidance disappointed some, however, and shares fell yesterday in after-hours trading.
The company has three primary revenue streams: premium subscriptions, marketing solutions (display ads and sponsorships) and talent solutions (for recruiters), where it still makes most of its money.
Below is the discussion of their relative performance from the earnings release:

Talent Solutions: Revenue from Talent Solutions products totaled $275.9 million, an increase of 50% compared to the first quarter of 2013. Talent Solutions revenue represented 58% of total revenue in the first quarter of 2014, compared to 57% in the first quarter of 2013.

Marketing Solutions: Revenue from Marketing Solutions products totaled $101.8 million, an increase of 36% compa…

Smartphones To Reach 90 Pct. In US, UK By 2016 — Forecast

An analysis by The Guardian, relying on Kantar ComTech data, asserts that the UK market will reach 90 percent smartphone penetration in 2016. The publication cites a separate analysis by Horace Dediu arguing something very similar for the US market: smartphone adoption will reach 90 percent by the end of 2016.
These now sound like common sense or even bland predictions. But there was a time a few years ago when they would have sounded quite radical. But costs have come way down for smartphones (especially Android devices) and the culture has changed as well.
The future of global internet growth will mostly be driven by smartphones and tablets and not by the PC. Indeed, IT consulting firm Gartner has predicted that traditional PCs will represent only 10 percent of “device shipments” next year 2015. The rest will be smartphones, tablets and convertible tablet-PC hybrids.
There’s considerable additional evidence of these trends coming from multiple sources. For example:

The New VW Site: It’s Like Tinder For Cars

Acknowledging the fact that most car sites — including their own old site — are just glorified brochures that don’t do much in the way of helping buyers locate a car that is actually available, VW is out with a very Tinder-like site that makes choosing a car as easy as choosing a date.
The new takes inspiration from a not so obvious source: online dating sites. The site uses matchmaking functionality to help shoppers find their dream car based on whatever they’re looking for — a particular model, features, color, or even price. Then it pairs them with new or used Volkswagen cars in their area. Each car even has its own profile page with images, features, specs, and payment estimator. Currently, there are more than 80,000 unique profile pages and more than 10 million possible configured images.
It’s a move in the right direction. After all, when you want a car, you want a car. You don’t want to have to wait for it to be found or to have it manufactured to your specification…

Is This the End of AdWords Editor?

While updates to the AdWords interface come out frequently, AdWords Editor continues to be left behind with the same functionality. Will Google continue to support AdWords Editor, or will it be phased out in favor of the web interface?

Google Updates AdSense Text Ads For Better Readability On Both Mobile And Web

Google has rolled out a fairly stark new look for AdSense text ads that is designed to be easier to read across devices.

The ads have a default color palate of blue and grey and use the Roboto font that Google already uses on Android OS. Prior to the update Roboto Light was the only Roboto version available for AdSense text ads.
The size and position of the call-to-action button adjusts based on the ad unit as well, as shown in the examples above.

Twitter Expands Geo-Targeted Ads In 8 Countries

Twitter has announced an expansion of its geo-targeted ads in eight countries.
To be clear, this isn’t eight new countries just getting access to geo-targeted ads; it’s deeper geo-targeting in countries that could already be targeted with country-level ads.
Advertisers can now do state/region targeting with their Twitter ads in these countries:

The Netherlands
United Kingdom

Twitter says this means there are now 12 countries where state/region geo-targeting is available, and more than 200 countries are available for country-level targeting.
