We’re Watching More Video Online, But Nowhere Near As Much As We Watch TV [Nielsen]

There’s no questioning the rise in online video viewing, but U.S. adults are still watching a lot more video on their television sets than anywhere else.
Nielsen’s Q2 2014 Cross-Platform Report reports that U.S. adults are averaging about 4.5 hours of live TV watching per day, while digital video viewing ranges from 19-35 minutes per day, depending on the age group. As you’d expect, the younger you are, the more video you watch online and the less live TV you watch.

Among all three age groups, online video viewing has essentially doubled in the past two years. Even the 50-and-older crowd (where I’ll be in just a few years) is watching 19 minutes of video online every day, up from just nine minutes per day in 2012. Meanwhile, TV watching is down about 10 minutes per day for adults in both the 18-34 and 35-49 age groups. But that 50+ group is watching more live TV now than they did two years ago.
The trend is obviously favoring digital video over live TV, but the latter is still the domina…

Twitter Introduces Buy Button To Enable In-Tweet Transactions

Twitter took the wraps off its long awaited e-commerce plans today, announcing a test of a Buy button that will enable users to make purchases from within tweets on their iOS and Android devices.
The test is being pushed out to a small percentage of U.S. users, who will be seeing the button on tweets from a select group of Twitter e-commerce partners — Fancy, Gumroad, Musictoday and Stripe.
Users who tap the Buy button will see additional product details and be prompted to enter shipping and payment information. Once that’s been entered and confirmed, order information is sent to the merchant for delivery. Payment and shipping information is encrypted and stored by Twitter so users won’t have to re-enter to make purchases in the future.
Twitter is starting the test with a group of artists, brands and nonprofit organizations, including Eminem, Brad Paisley, Burberry, Demi Lovato, the Nature Conservancy and the Home Depot.
“This is an early step in our building functionality into Twitter to…

Microsoft Redesigns MSN Portal For Multi-Platform Era

Microsoft has redesigned its portal site MSN to make it more cross-platform and ad friendly as well as more personalized. It’s a considerable improvement over the current site.
Below is the new MSN preview followed by the existing design.

As you can see even from the screens above the new MSN features a cleaner, more readable design that also involves more scrolling. There will be native apps and HTML5 versions. Presumably apps will be available across mobile operating systems.
It looked good and was very easy to use in my quick tests via a the Chrome browser on Android.
Sections and content can be added or subtracted and moved up or down the page without signing in. If users do sign in (and use many Microsoft services) it becomes a kind of productivity dashboard too, with access to email, cloud storage, Skype and office documents.

Microsoft is also highlighting content partnerships with “premium publishers” such as The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, CNN, AOL and Con…
