Facebook takes another step backwards with a new Groups apps

About seven years ago, Facebook convinced the denizens of the internet that it was not only safe to come out of the IRC chat rooms, it was actually a good thing. No more hiding behind fake names while you discuss a singular topic with a room full of people, half of whom are there just to annoy you. You can no longer afford to not have a mobile-friendly website that isn’t readable or usable on a mobile phone. That’s because Google is now clearly marking websites (screenshot) in mobile search results that it considers mobile friendly and if that tag isn’t getting displayed around your content, your website may see a drop in mobile traffic.
Responsive design is definitely the way to go but will that be enough. How do you confirm if your web pages are considered mobile friendly by Google? There are quite a few options.
One, you can do a site:domain.com search in Google on any mobile phone to check if that tag is displayed around the most popular web pages of your website. This is the quickest way to check mobile-friendliness of multiple pages without using any of the tools.

Forrester Says Marketers Are Wasting Resources on Facebook, Twitter

Marketers looking to build stronger connections with consumers typically turn to social media industry leaders Facebook and Twitter for their outreach. But those are the wrong places to be looking, according to a new report by Forrester Research.
So few people actually see posts from top brands on Facebook and Twitter that focusing heavily on those networks can be a waste of time, money and resources, Forrester vice president and principal analyst Nate Elliott concludes in the report titled “Social Relationship Strategies That Work.”
“It’s clear that Facebook and Twitter don’t offer the relationships that marketing leaders crave,” Elliott wrote. “Yet most brands still use these sites as the centerpiece of their social efforts — thereby wasting significant financial, technological, and human resources on social networks that don’t deliver value.”

Salesforce Fully Integrates Social Studio Into Marketing Cloud

Salesforce announced today that has fully integrated its Swiss Army knife of a social media tool into its suite of enterprise marketing, sales and customer service offerings.
By folding Social Studio into the Marketing Cloud product, Salesforce said it has created the silo-busting tool that businesses are begging for.
Now Salesforce customers will be able to easily route social customer service complaints to the team monitoring Service Cloud, or seamlessly forward to Sales Cloud prospects who engage with social accounts. And Social Studio enables employees in those departments to correspond with the public from within the tool, instead of on the social network, allowing for better tracking of conversations.

Get Daily Email Reports of your Google Drive Activity

The Google Drive website includes an Activity Stream to help you monitor changes to the various files and folders contained in your Drive. Whether you upload a file, move a file from one folder to another or change the sharing permissions, your actions will get logged. This is especially useful for users who have shared files in their Drive that can be edited by external users.

The Activity Stream is however not available inside mobile apps and you’d have to log into the Google Drive website website daily to see what files and folders have changed recently.
Know What’s Changed in your Google Drive
There’s however a simple workaround. Instead of checking the activity stream manually, you can configure a Google Sheet and it’ll send you a daily email report (screenshot) of all the files in your Drive that have been created or modified in the past 24 hours. And it just takes 30 seconds to set up the monitoring.

Yahoo Integrates Access To Flurry’s In-App Video Inventory

Yahoo announced today that it is integrating Flurry’s in-app video inventory into its ad platforms.
Yahoo acquired Flurry in July for its reach across mobile apps and ad targeting capabilities. The integration allows advertisers to buy mobile video inventory on Flurry’s app network as well as its exchange through Yahoo Ad Manager Plus, which encompasses display, stream ads, mobile, search video and display ad inventory.
Flurry also offers persona targeting capabilities and says it already serves more than 100 million video ads each month to more than a billion devices globally.
Advertisers can buy :15, :30 or :60 second interstitial ads by audience, channel or show.
Video is a key part of Yahoo’s strategy for reviving its ad business. With the Flurry integration, Yahoo now claims to be the “the largest provider of video ad inventory in the industry” — and this comes before it closes its acquisition of programmatic video platform, BrightRoll, early next year.

Report: We Now Spend More Time On Mobile Devices Than TV

Users spent more time on mobile devices than watching TV for the first time last quarter. That’s according to new insights from Flurry, the mobile ad network now owned by Yahoo.
Time spent on mobile devices the U.S. increased 9.3 percent in the past 9 months from 2 hours and 42 minutes to 2 hours and 57 minutes, while TV usage remained flat at 2 hours and 48 minutes.
Mobile usage was app driven, as time spent on the mobile web remained flat.
The growth came not from the top 25 apps (as ranked by comScore), but from apps that aren’t necessarily blockbusters.
Flurry found that time spent in the top 25 apps grew by 1 percent in the past 9 months, while the remaining apps saw usage time increase by 21 percent.
Rather than seeing consolidation taking over the app ecosystem, Flurry says “independent developers have survived attempts by large players to consolidate the ecosystem” and are flourishing. There are now some 590,000 applications on the Flurry network in 180 countries, the company says…

Twitter Finally Makes All Your Tweets Searchable

Twitter’s memory is about to get a lot better.
The company announced today that it has indexed all public tweets and will be giving users the ability to search through the full body of Twitter’s roughly half trillion posts.
Twitter’s search has long been incomplete because the company’s engineers focused on sifting through real-time output. The real-time search engine, an inverted index of about a week’s worth of tweets, has been supplemented since 2012 with about 2 billion “top tweets” and in 2013 that link was made more robust.
Now Twitter has completed the task of incorporating the full archive — which is more than 100 times larger that the live index and grows by several billion tweets a week — beginning with @Jack’s first message on the network.

Facebook Groups Now Has Its Own App, But Users Don’t Have To Download It

The appification of Facebook continued today with the launch of a separate app for Facebook Groups.
The free app is available today worldwide for both Android and iOS, and lets users interact with groups they’re already in, as well as create new groups and get recommendations for groups they might be interested in.
Facebook says it has about 700 million Groups users, which is about half of the entire Facebook population. The reaction from those users will be interesting to watch. Facebook launched a separate app for its Messenger service a few years ago, and then provoked some angry responses earlier this year when it made the Messenger app mandatory and removed the feature from the main Facebook app.
For the moment, at least, Facebook is saying the right things about the new Groups app: Groups users don’t have to use the app, and the Groups product will still be part of the main Facebook app and Facebook.com. Facebook says it plans to continue improving those versions of Groups, too.
