The Role of Data Analytics in Successful Retail Acquisition Campaigns

This past summer, the Gartner Group surveyed people some 215 people who are responsible for the digital-commerce strategies within their companies; 59 of the respondents represented retail companies.
The study shows that the chief marketing officers at retail organizations aren’t exactly driving the digital strategies for their companies. As Garner observes, these marketing teams need to stop limiting their efforts to promotions, and actively become active participants – key drivers, even – of their organizations’ ecommerce strategies.

Easier said then done? Perhaps. The pace of change in the way consumers interact with brands (and make purchasing decisions) has transformed the role of marketing, and this has been a source of challenges for plenty of marketing teams, and for good reason.
Marketing has always been about telling a great brand story and communicating it to the marketplace. But since the advent of data-driven programmatic (not to mention cross-screen) marketing, the complexi…

Google Buys TLD “.App” For $25 Million In Record Breaking ICANN Auction

Liang Zou / Shutterstock.com

This week’s ICANN auction resulted in the largest amount ever paid for a TLD when Google purchased .app for a record-breaking $25 million.
According to a DomainNameWire.com report, twelve companies were bidding for the domain name during ICANN’s auction on Wednesday, with Google eventually out-bidding other applicants, including Amazon.com, Minds + Machines and Radix.
The .app domain name is a natural fit with the Google Play Store now that Google is an official domain registrar. The company opened its domain services to all users last month, after launching its invite-only domain service in June of last year.
Sounding a bit slap-happy about the winning bid, a Google spokesperson told Business Insider, “”We’ve been excited and curious about the potential for new TLDs for .soy long. We are very .app-y with .how, at a .minna-mum, they have the potential to .foo-ward internet innovation.”

Brands Ride The #Llama Drama

It doesn’t take much to rev up the Internet’s absurdity engine. Today, it was a pair of runaway llamas eluding capture by Sheriff’s deputies in Sun City, Ariz., much to the amusement of the Internet’s chattering masses. LLow speed chase, anyone?
In case you missed it, head over to Deadspin to see a video

of the incident set to the tune of “Yakety Sax.”
On Twitter, #llamas, #teamllama and Black Llama made up three of the top four trending topics at one point in the afternoon.
Naturally, brands weren’t about to pass up a real-time marketing opportunity. Here’s a selection of some that we found. We’ll leave it up to you to decide which one lean on groan-worthy puns and which were clever.

Google Analytics Now Displaying Malware Notifications

Google Analytics users will now see a notification if their website has been hacked.
In the same way website owners receive malicious software alerts via Google Webmaster Tools, Google Analytics users will now get automatic notifications letting them know when malicious software has been identified on their site.

We’re extending our Safe Browsing protections to automatically display notifications to all Google Analytics users via familiar Google Analytics Notifications.
Google Analytics Users will see the following notification that malware has been detected on their website.

In addition to the new Google Analytics malware notifications, Google has also expanded its Safebrowsing efforts.
According to a post on its security blog from earlier this week, Chrome users will be warned if a site contains malicious software. Google has also incorporated new signals to identify deceptive websites, and is disabling Google ads that lead to hacked sites.
All these security updates follow news last week…

Twitter Adds Two New Tracking Tools To Measure ROI On Ads

Twitter today announced two enhancements to its ad conversion tracking tools to give marketers more insight into ROI from Twitter campaigns.
The new features — “transaction values” and “key conversion tags” — both enable website owners to see sales that were directly driven by Promoted Tweet efforts and are available globally to all advertisers. They both require placement of conversion tags on websites; such tags had previously been used for remarketing purposes. Now, Twitter product manager Abhishek Shrivastava explained in a blog post, the tags can be adjusted to track sales figures:

“If you’ve implemented our website tag already, you can make some simple changes to the tag to start collecting conversion values and order quantities for each conversion. These values are aggregated and reported back in your Twitter Ads analytics dashboard to provide insights on your ROI from your Promoted Tweet campaigns. If you aren’t using conversion tracking yet, it’s easy to get started by creating…

Twenty20′s Crowd-Sourced Stock Image Service Exits Beta

Need to freshen your stock image selection? Twenty20 has a photo catalog that’s 45 million strong.
And these aren’t your average stock photos; they are crowd-sourced from a community of 250,000 photographers that Twenty20 has rounded up since launching as Instacanvas in 2012.
The original service focused on creating a marketplace for canvas prints of Instagram photographs. The Marina del Rey-based startup, which rebranded as Twenty20 in 2013, has been quietly building one of the world’s largest catalogs of stock images.
Today, the company announced that its stock image service is exiting beta, along with an $8-million round of Series A funding.
The timing is right, founder and CEO Matt Munson, told Marketing Land. More and more, marketers are looking to illustrate their content with real-world imagery. Traditional stock images can look like … well, stock images.
“All the trends in marketing and brand-building are toward people wanting a more authentic message,” Munson said. “We are all spe…

VC Firm Predicts Marketing Technology Investments Will Climb To $120 Billion Over Next 10 Years

Venture capitalist Ashu Garg predicts marketers are going to be spending ten times what they currently spend on marketing technology over the next ten years.
In Garg’s recently published “MarTech and the Decade of the CMO” white paper, the general partner at Foundation Capital says he expects the current $12 billion CMOs invest in software and technology will climb to $120 billion by 2025.
The CMO of tomorrow is the data nerd of today.
According to Garg, only one percent of marketing budgets currently go to software/tech investments. He forecasts this amount to increase substantially over the next decade as the role of the CMO transitions into what Garg defines as the “CeO” or Chief Experience Officer, “owning the end-to-end customer experience.”

“While the growth rate of overall marketing spend will remain unchanged,” says Garg, “Its composition will change dramatically and technology will command a larger share of the budget.”

Google Piloting App Ads In Google Play Store Search Results

Google announced today that it is piloting a test to show ads for apps in its Google Play store.
The test is starting with app discovery ads in search results. Ads are triggered by relevant search queries in the way Google’s AdWords search advertising works.

Search ads on Google Play will enable developers to drive more awareness of their apps and provide consumers new ways to discover apps that they otherwise might have missed.

In the example from Google below, the ad that appears in a search for “coupon app” is signified by the yellow “Ad” icon the company uses in Google.com search results.

The test will run with ads from a pilot group of advertisers are already running Google search ads for their apps and will only reach a limited set of users during the pilot. While the test will include only app marketers currently using AdWords, the campaigns won’t be tied, on the front end at least. The ability to buy Play Store app ads in AdWords could be something that comes later, but there’s no…

Google Now Auto-Converts Flash Display Ads To HTML5 For Mobile

Ken Wolter / Shutterstock.com

Today, Google announced that display ads created in Flash now will be converted automatically to HTML5 to make them eligible for viewing on mobile devices and browsers that do not support Flash.
The feature was originally announced last fall among a slew of updates designed to make Google’s display formats more mobile-friendly. The ads will be converted when advertisers upload Flash ads to AdWords directly or through third-party tools. Until now, Google displayed a static image backup of an ad where Flash wasn’t supported. Now the ads will display as fully interactive on all devices.
The change applies to existing and new eligible Flash campaigns, so no need to make any changes if you’re currently running Flash creative. Though, to ensure that your ads can be converted successfully, you should test them using Google’s Swiffy tool. If the ad is converted to HTML5 when you upload it in Swiffy, then you’re good to go in AdWords.
You can also segment ad reports i…

Google Is Most Talked About Brand Online, But Disney Is Most Loved [Study]

Ken Wolter / Shutterstock.com

For the second year in a row, Google was the most talked-about brand in online conversations in 2014 — but it was Disney that scored best for the most positive sentiment in online discussions.
Those are a couple conclusions from social analytics company Infegy and its The World’s 50 Most Popular Brands report. The company analyzed discussions of more than 800 brands across the web, crawling major social networks like Facebook and Twitter, along with blogs, forums, review sites and news websites.
Google held on to the top spot as the most discussed brand even though there were 30 percent fewer mentions of the company in 2014 than the year before. But Google was down near the middle of the pack with only 69 percent of its mentions being positive. A further 26 percent were classified as negative, with the other five percent “mixed.” Much of the online conversation about Google was focused on devices (like the Nexus) and apps:

A Carousel Of Pins: Pinterest Is Testing A Multi-Image Ad Unit

Pinterest continues to beat an aggressive path for cash. Today’s news is that the company is pitching a multi-image Promoted Pin unit to ad agencies.
Reported first by Digiday, the feature would give advertisers the ability to include more than one photo in a “multi-pin carousel. ” Pinterest spokesman Mike Mayzel confirmed that the company is experimenting with the format. It’s “one example of many things we are testing,” Mayzel wrote in an email to Marketing Land.
Both Facebook and Twitter offer similar ad features; Facebook’s rolled out its multi-product ad unit this month and Twitter allows up to four images in a single tweet.
Pinterest’s monetization efforts have been accelerating recently. On January 1, the company officially launched its CPM-based promoted pin ad product. (Its CPC-, auction-based ad system remains in beta.) Later in January, it announced it was serving Promoted Pins to users home feeds, moving beyond category pages and search results.
And this month, Recode reported

Report: Apple, Android Now 96 Percent Of Smartphones Globally

Android has most of the devices, while Apple generates most of the profits. Together they control the global smartphone market.
According to analyst firm and hardware tracker IDC, smartphones running Android and iOS accounted for just over 96 percent of smartphone shipments in Q4. However, of that, Android had an overall market share (shipments) of nearly 82 percent globally.
By comparison Apple, which saw share gains in key markets in Q4, had a 2014 market share of roughly 15 percent. Windows Phone shipments grew but Microsoft’s smartphone market share shrank. According to IDC most of the company’s success is at the “entry level” end of the market.

Samsung remained the dominant Android handset maker but its share and shipments were flat according to IDC. Despite Samsung’s device dominance Apple earns the majority of smartphone device profits globally.
According to StatCounter US mobile traffic breaks down as follows:

Facebook Passes 2 Million Advertisers, Launches Ads Manager App For iOS

Facebook, making it easier to manage advertising campaigns on the go, today launched an ads manager app for iOS devices.
The move coincides with Facebook’s announcement that it now has more than 2 million active advertisers, an increase of 500,000 since July. The company says more than 800,000 use the mobile ad manager at least once a month, which is no doubt the motive behind the development of the mobile app.
The app is available today for U.S. users in the iOS store and, Facebook says, will be available globally in the next few weeks. An Android version of the app is expected to launch later this year.
From the app, advertisers can:

Track ad performance
Edit existing ads
Edit ad budgets and schedules
Receive push notifications
Create ads

European Report: Facebook’s Privacy Terms, Practices Violate EU Regulations

A new report (and below) issued under the authority of the Belgian Privacy Commission concludes that Facebook’s updated privacy policy violates European data protection laws. The news was initially reported by The Guardian.
The report’s authors cited multiple privacy concerns and issued the following statement summarizing their conclusions:

First, Facebook places too much burden on its users. Users are expected to navigate Facebook’s complex web of settings (which include “Privacy”, “Apps”, “Adds”, “Followers”, etc.) in search of possible opt-outs. Facebook’s default settings related to behavioural profiling or Social Ads, for example, are particularly problematic. Moreover, users are offered no choice whatsoever with regard to their appearance in “Sponsored Stories” or the sharing of location data. Second, users do not receive adequate information. For instance, it isn’t always clear what is meant by the use of images “for advertising purposes”. Will profile pictures only be used for “…

Twitter’s “While You Were Away” Feature Lands On Android

Android users will soon be seeing Twitter’s iteration of an automated feed of the best Tweets they’ve missed since last login. The “While You Were Away” feature has been around for a month now, and has garnered mixed reviews. Some users love the “news feed” like properties, while others think it goes against the core unfiltered-ness of Twitter.

Update! Now rolling out on Android: a recap of top Tweets to help you keep up w/ your world. https://t.co/SxiFDZp7UQhttp://ift.tt/1DMbNYz

One major drawback to the feature is that users can’t opt of out of the notifications. While this seems problematic, those power users that check Twitter often won’t see the message as they simply haven’t been away (nor have they missed anything). The biggest draw of this feature is the ability to cater to the less savvy user who otherwise may be overwhelmed by the service. With the curated “greatest hits” now showing up for Android users, it may help Twitter reverse their

Without Ellen’s Selfie, Oscar Tweets Fall By Nearly 50%

Turns out Ellen’s selfie is a very tough act to follow. Without anything like the impromptu-yet-staged photo opp during Sunday night’s Academy Award telecast, Twitter experienced a dramatic decrease in Oscar-related tweets.
Last year, Twitter users sent 11.2 million tweets; this year the total was 5.9 million, according to Nielsen’s Twitter TV ratings, a decrease of 47%. The fall-off was probably inevitable considering how Twitter-shaking the Ellen selfie was. That single tweet — which now has a record 3.3 million RTs — alone accounted for more than 20% of the tweets about the 2014 event. During the height of the frenzy, some people were unable to post and view tweets.
The 2014 telecast also had other buzzworthy moments — remember the mid-show pizza delivery, John Travolta mangling Idina Menzel’s introduction? — that contributed to the higher Twitter activity. This year’s show was also seen by 7 million fewer people in the U.S. television market, according to preliminary Nielsen figures

The Envelope, Please: Real-Time Marketing Winners and Losers From The Oscars

360b / Shutterstock.com

When it comes to real-time marketing, everything is not awesome. Jokes fall flat. Sometimes efforts are just pretty good. Other times they are terrible. Or embarrassing.
Most RTM falls somewhere in the middle and that was certainly the case during the Academy Awards telecast Sunday night. With no major meme-producing moments like 2014′s record-setting selfie, brands had to generate their own viral energy.
And some — like Dove and Lego — did very well. Dove’s campaign against negativity set a positive tone for the evening. The company is working to turn the tide against the 5 million negative tweets about beauty and body image it says women posted in 2014. In the last 24 hours, the #SpeakBeautiful hashtag has been tweeted more than 27,000 times according to social analytics tool Topsy.

Google AdWords Debuts Mobile Call-Only Campaign Type To Drive Calls

Source: Google

Advertisers looking to drive calls from their paid search ads, now have the option of setting up a Call-only campaign or adding call-only ads to existing campaigns in Google AdWords.
As the name suggests, when users click on either the call button or the Call-only itself, the phone number appears in the standard prompt to confirm the call. Users cannot get to the advertiser’s website by clicking on the ad.
The headline displays as the phone number, while the display URL simply serves as branding and lets users know what business they’re calling.

Setting up call-only ads had been possible with call extensions, but the new ad type is designed to make it easier to set them up — and establish “calls from ads” as the conversion type to track across a Call-only campaign.
Call-only ads can be added to existing search network campaigns as well. In the ad setup, you can include two description lines of ad copy and the display URL and opt to report calls from ads as phone call convers…

Confirmed: Google Buys Softcard To Better Compete With Apple Pay

One could argue that Google Wallet was ahead of its time. When it launched it was blocked by wireless carriers (except for Sprint) that were involved in mobile payments joint venture ISIS, which became Softcard. It was rumored last month that Google was buying Softcard, which has been confirmed today.
In a blog post Google said:

[W]e’re excited to announce that we’re working with AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, as well as their mobile payments company Softcard, to help more Android users get the benefits of tap and pay. Under this relationship, the Google Wallet app, including the tap and pay functionality, will come pre-installed on Android phones (running KitKat or higher) sold by these carriers in the US later this year. We’re also acquiring some exciting technology and intellectual property from Softcard to make Google Wallet better.

Effectively what Google is doing is buying the troubled company to gain access to the carrier relationships. There’s probably noth…

Pinterest Ups Its Spam Fighting Efforts: Cuts Number Of “Spam Clicks” In Half

Pinterest has upped its game against spam, claiming to have cut the number of Pinners who click on spam in half during the last six months.
In an announcement released today, the company said the amount of spam reported on the site has “nose dived” so low that it’s not even a useful metric anymore.
We can dismantle entire attacks in milliseconds, whereas 12 months ago it would have taken us four hours to a day.
According to Pinterest, the system it now has in place responds twice as fast to internal spam request. “Our system’s ability to successfully respond to bad behavior improved from 95 percent to 99.99 percent,” writes Pinterest “Black Ops” manager Marty Weiner.
Weiner says Pinterest’s anti-spam efforts are the result of a system it begin building last year called Stringray, a stream processor and rule engine that can pre-empt spam attacks.

LinkedIn Adds Notification Center To Company Pages

Marketers who use LinkedIn company pages got a handy upgrade this week. The jobs and career focused social network launched a notification center for LinkedIn company pages.
From the new page, social media managers will be able to:

Get an aggregated overview of how many likes, comments, and shares you’ve received on Company Page updates and how often your company has been mentioned by LinkedIn members on the platform
View every publicly shared mention of your company on LinkedIn
See all of the most recent likes, comments and shares your company has received in a single view
Comment and like as a company representative in response to mentions about your company

LinkedIn has also adjusted the way it displays notifications, aggregating multiple actions from company pages into single notifications. That way page administrators are better able to manage notifications from the company page, and differentiate those from notifications from their personal professional networks.

Wayin Goes All-In With Real-Time Social Search Tool

Wayin, a martech firm that cut its teeth helping brands, sports franchises and television broadcasters display social media off social networks, announced this week that it is launching a real-time social search engine.
The tool offers enterprises the ability to search across Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and analyze results based on location, gender and period of time. The tool also shows sentiment and context around social content and conversations.
Wayin’s new tool will help make sense of the noise, Wayin CEO Elaine Feeney said. “Social media sites today are full of so much information that it’s often difficult for social media marketers to find the right content when it matters,” Feeney said in a release, “and then be able to act on it in a timely manner.”
The company’s blog explained further:

The way that the new Wayin platform processes social media data is incredibly powerful. Just a hashtag isn’t going to give you all the information that you want; however, a hashtag combined wi…
