A Cross Platform Pushbullet Update Brings Messaging Features and an Overhauled UI

Pushbullet,  the must-have cross platform app for effortlessly sending links, notes and files between all your devices has received a 2.0 update today. Along with a much needed UI change, the app also includes a messaging feature. Because that’s what we need in 2015, another messaging app. But there’s a bit more to it than that. The Windows app also brings Hangouts style, always-on screen chat heads for your contacts. Mac and Chrome extension users are getting only the standard popup windows for now. It’s the new UI that’s the most interesting feature to me. And it’s for all the platforms. Even the drop-down menu in the Chrome extension was revamped. And it’s clear why. It might not sound like much, but Pushbullet just went from a service that lets you send stuff between your devices and occasionally your friends to being a messaging service. The Android app is now divided into three sections: Friends, Me, and Following. The Friends tab will work just like any other messaging app — sho…

Companies Are Telling The Wrong Story: We Forgot The Hero And It’s Killing Corporate Creativity

For many businesses, it’s hard to have a little fun in the workplace. I’ve worked with clients who take themselves far too seriously. And any attempts to have fun get slowly diluted by either too many people (and their two cents) or stakeholders afraid of getting on their bosses’ radar. We’re all working for the weekend, aren’t we?I’ve seen this story too many times. Save for a few companies, corporate America discourages creativity. Your run-of-the-mill cubicle drones have no financial incentive to put their necks on the line in the spirit of creativity. And for the courageous few who take a risk, the sample size within the company is so small that the cons outweigh the pros every time.Progressive businesses are getting more creative. And at the center of that creativity lies a story. But whose story? And how do you tell that story?Perhaps the one company with a track record of great storytelling is Pixar. It’s done a pretty decent job of telling stories, right? So what’s its secret?…

Why And How Publishers Will Force Advertisers To Engage Consumers

Traditional media-buying negotiations are pretty straightforward: The publisher has some inventory it wants to sell, and the advertiser that is willing to pay the most for that inventory wins! It’s that “supply and demand” concept that you learn in Econ 101.That model, however, is under threat, and it’s being challenged by internet marketing behemoths like Google and Facebook. The future of media buying — if these companies get to decide — will be driven by a combination of price and engagement. In other words, advertisers will be awarded inventory based on their ability to come up with content that consumers actually like.Salvo #1: Adding Click-Through Rate To The MixAmong the many innovations Google has brought to advertising, perhaps the most significant is the inclusion of click-through rate (CTR) in the determination of whether an advertiser wins an auction for inventory.Prior to CTR, the standard model was “he who pays the most per click wins!” In the SEM world, this was pioneer…

Priced at $23 (Rs 1,500), Meizu Power Bank With 10,000mAh Capacity Supports Two-Way Fast-Charging

At a media event in Beijing, China, local smartphone manufacturer Meizu launched its latest flagship smartphone, the MX5. At the sidelines of it, the company also announced a new power bank, which perhaps is the biggest takeaway from today’s event. Reason? Called the Meizu Power Bank, it is the first of its kind to support fast-charging.Power banks are cool, but you know, they take forever to charge. I have a power bank from a company called Nook, and I kid you not, it takes 13 hours to charge completely. The Meizu Power Bank, which is available in 10,000mAh capacity, is addressing this annoying problem. The company says that thanks to its fast-charging support, you can have an MX 5 smartphone connected to it, and still manage to get the full-charge in less than 3.5 hours. If that wasn’t exciting enough, the Meizu Power Bank supports fast-charging both ways. So the phone you have connected to it will also take less time to charge, provided it supports fast-charging, obviously. Priced a…

As the cloud space gets more competitive than ever in India, Amazon announces today that it will establish multiple data centers in the country next year. These services include Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, a service that rents virtual computers on which clients can run their applications; and Amazon S3, an online file storage web service by the company.“Tens of thousands of customers in India are using AWS from one of AWS’s eleven global infrastructure regions outside of India. Several of these customers, along with many prospective new customers, have asked us to locate infrastructure in India so they can enjoy even lower latency to their end users in India and satisfy any d…

Search Beats Display: Microsoft Says Bing Is A Sustainable & Standalone Multibillion Dollar Business

Think search advertising is boring, and that it’s all about programmatic and display these days? Microsoft’s move today to dispose of its display business but keep search shows how powerful and unique search remains. As announced today, Microsoft is ridding itself of its display ad sales business. That something it feels can be handled just as well by farming it out to AOL and AppNexus. But search is different. Search is important. Search is something that Microsoft has no plans to dispose of.We are deeply committed on the search side. We see it as a business that we’ve built out over the past six years as sustainable and standalone,” said Rik van der Kooi, the vice president who heads Microsoft’s ad business, when we talked today about Microsoft’s moves.I wasn’t sure I heard correctly. Was van de Kooi saying that Bing really was making money now as a standalone business? That’s not something I’d recalled Microsoft saying before.“It’s a multibillion dollar business, and it does pay for…
