Xiaomi Unveils the Mi TV 2S with a 48-inch 4K Display in a 9.9mm Thin Aluminium Frame

For most of us, Xiaomi translates into affordable smartphones with great specs and features, but the Chinese company also has a very mature product portfolio that doesn’t involve mobile devices. Xiaomi has now announced its latest entry in its TV lineup – the new Mi TV 2S.

Xiaomi's Mi TV 2S

The Mi TV 2S comes with the latest version of MIUI which is based on Android 5.0. The standout feature of the new TV set is its aluminium frame that’s only 9.9mm thin. The Mi TV 2S has a 48-inch 4K display which can decode 4K at 60Hz. The 10-bit panel is made by Samsung and has a 85% NTSC color gamut coverage.

MStar 6A928 SoC with four Cortex A17 CPU cores clocked at 1.4GHz and a Mali T760MP4 GPU are the kernels powering the device. Connectivity-wise, we find two HDMI 2.0 ports as well as one USB 3.0, port Wi-Fi ac and Bluetooth 4.0. The Mi TV 2S comes with 2GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage.

The TV features the Dolby technology for better sound output. Xiaomi claims that even the ‘power plug is a work of art’ as the company has partnered with world’s largest power cord supplier to design 12 plugs in 6 months. Furthermore, the Mi TV 2S is said to get a 18% higher color saturation than other TVs and thanks to its precise backlight module design, it prevents light leakage.

Xiaomi's Mi TV 2S launch

The Mi TV 2S is available in pink, blue, green, gold and other color options, selling for 2,999 Yuan ($485) in China. Xiaomi also has a separate Cinema Edition of the 2S that which features a separate speaker system including a horizontal sound bar and a dedicated subwoofer. This model will retail for Yuan 3,999 ($645).

Both versions will be available from July 22 and Xiaomi is going to partner for the launch with content providers such as Youku, BesTV, PPTV and others. The color options for the device is another unusual feat in the TV industry, and along with the very slim profile, this could be a steal for those who love such shiny toys. It’s just a pity that it’s very hard to buy this product if you’re not living in China.

Xiaomi has also announced the new Mi Water Purifier, as well, which joins the Mi Air Purifier that the company announced back in December.

How to Get SMS Alerts for Gmail via Twitter

How do you get SMS notifications on your mobile phone for important emails in your Gmail? Google doesn’t support text notifications for their email service but Twitter does. If we can figure out a way to connect our Twitter and Gmail accounts, the Gmail notifications can arrive as text on our mobile via Twitter. Let me explain:Twitter allows you to follow any @user via a simple SMS. They provide short codes for all countries (see list) and if you text FOLLOW to this shortcode following by the  username, any tweets from that user will arrive in your phone as text notifications. For instance, if you are in the US, you can tweet FOLLOW labnol to 40404 to get my tweets as text messages. Similarly, users in India can text FOLLOW labnol to 9248948837 to get the tweets via SMS.The short code service of Twitter can act as a Gmail SMS notifier. You create a new Twitter account, set the privacy to private and this account will send a tweet when you get a new email in Gmail. Follow this account …

Instagram Story links get 15-25% swipe-through rates for brands, publishers

Instagram may arrived late as a traffic source for brands and publishers, but it’s already showing early signs of success, driving new visitors to their sites and even outperforming its parent company, Facebook. For years brands, publishers and other have tried to push people from the Facebook-owned photo-and-video-sharing app to their sites. Outside of ads and excepting a recent test with some retailers, Instagram didn’t offer much help to companies looking to use it to drive traffic. So they had to find workarounds. They put links in their Instagram bios. They scrawled short-code URLs onto their pictures. And they typed out links in their captions. Then last month Instagram finally introduced an official alternative to these hacky workarounds: the ability for verified profiles to insert links in their Instagram Stories.Almost a month after the launch, 15% to 25% of the people who see a link in an Instagram Story are swiping on it, according to a handful of brands and publishers that h…
