Pinterest Search Now Knows If You’re Male Or Female

Pinterest’s efforts to attract more men to its social bookmarking got a thorough airing in the Wall Street Journal today. It’s definitely worth a read, but to summarize briefly the company is still struggling with the perception that it’s a mostly female zone.
With comScore estimating that women made up 71% of Pinterest’s 72.5 million visitors in December and a Pew Research survey showing that only 13% of U.S. online men using the site, there’s solid evidence of a female-male imbalance, though Pinterest has said it doubled the number of male users last year, a growth rate higher than for females.
The demographic mix is important to Pinterest as it works to boost its revenue — the privately-held company launched its Promoted Pins ad product this month in the U.S. — and convince advertisers that it will be able to reach men as well.

Twitter Officially Rolls Out Bing Translation

Twitter has taken the wraps off its long-running experiment with Bing Translator, announcing today that it will now offer translations of tweets in multiple languages.
The feature has been activated for the desktop platform and iOS and Android devices. Tweets that aren’t in users’ native languages display with a globe in the upper right-hand corner of the tweet. Clicking or tapping on the globe actives the translator, which works for more than 40 languages. (Just apparently not Klingon. The Star Trek language is supported by Bing, but didn’t work for our test today on Twitter.)

Earlier this month, we reported that Twitter had added the feature to TweetDeck. The company has been experimenting with language translation since July 2013.

Facebook begins trolling for Super Bowl mentions to beef up targeted ad campaigns

Can’t plunk down $4.5 million for a 30-second Super Bowl TV ad? Perhaps, I could interest you in a less expensive Facebook Super Bowl ad, instead.
Social media and Super Bowl go together like Budweiser and Doritos. In the lead up to the big game, there are millions of mentions on Facebook. People talk about the commercials, recipes for Super Bowl parties, and some even talk about the teams participating in this year’s game.
Facebook recently set up a special digital detector that will locate all of these mentions, then add the mentioners to a growing list of potential Super Bowl targets. And it’s all happening in real time so savvy marketers can take advantage of any sudden trends like a response to a Super Bowl power outage or a particularly scandalous Carls Jr. commercial.
TV might have more, highly engaged eyeballs but only social media has the ability to change direction on the fly and that’s important when you’re dealing with a live event.

Four Of The Top Six Social Networks Are Actually Chat Apps

Social media networks are still growing rapidly worldwide, but much of that growth is being fueled by messaging apps instead of the usual suspects.
In fact, according to We Are Social’s Digital, Social and Mobile in 2015 report, four of the world’s six largest global social platforms are messaging apps. Facebook still leads with 1.36 billion monthly active users, but QQ (829 million), Facebook-owned WhatsApp (600 million, recently updated to 700 million), Facebook Messenger (500 million) and WeChat (468 million) all rank ahead of any other social network.
Here’s the chart (which is based on stats publicly reported by the companies):

China with its huge market of 1.3 billion people and 642 million active internet users obviously has its thumb on the scale in these results. China-based Tencent owns two of the chat apps (QQ and We Chat) and the second-ranked social network QZone with 629 million users.
