Tomorrow Is Mobilegeddon: What You Need To Know Today

Whether you call it “Mopocalypse” or “Mobilegeddon,” Google’s mobile-friendly algorithm update arrives tomorrow. The update will be significant and potentially impact a large number of websites that aren’t mobile-friendly.Remarkably, some estimates suggest that as much as 40 percent of the top sites aren’t mobile friendly today. The best and fastest way to tell if you’re site is ready is to use Google’s mobile friendly testing tool.Barry Schwartz has written a comprehensive FAQ post on Search Engine Land about Mobilegeddon that answers almost every question you might ask about tomorrow’s update. It’s not going to impact Local, News or Tablets. It will only affect core search results. But all marketers need to take it very seriously, given that mobile is now the number one screen and roughly 30 percent of search volume in the US is coming from mobile devices — and growing much more quickly that PC search, which has plateaued.Read Barry’s post to get the full scoop. The post Tomorrow Is M…

Send Out An “S.O.S.” to Improve Your Database Email Marketing

If you have any kind of working customer relationship management (CRM) system, odds are much of your marketing effort is going toward your database of both customers and prospects. But did you know you can also use your email database to improve your marketing? You should be able to consistently improve your promotions over time — and I’ve aimed to boil that process down to just three steps: “S.O.S.”That stands for: Survey, Optimize and Smooth. If you haven’t used broadcast email messages to actively solicit feedback and make tangible changes to your marketing strategy, the following will give you the right ideas for testing and improving your ongoing email ROI. Let’s get started:1. SurveySimply put, survey your database to glean what they like and don’t like about your products or service. Use your marketing software to ask your database if your product or service is living up to their expectations. Ask your previous buyers questions, such as:Did they get what they wanted out of their…

Nokia Coming Back As Android Smartphone Brand In 2016

Stephen Elop, then Nokia CEO, famously said that the Android OS didn’t offer the company a sufficient opportunity for differentiation in the global smartphone marketplace. Accordingly Nokia exclusively adopted the Windows mobile OS instead. As we know the company didn’t have much success with its Windows-based Lumia smartphones and sold that division to Microsoft. Elop went back at his old employer (Microsoft) and Nokia exited the smartphone business. However as we previously discussed and as Re/code is reporting now, the company is coming back as a mobile hardware brand. This time, however, the model is brand licensing, with the relatively successful N1 tablet as the template. Last fall Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri said that Nokia would be licensing its brand to third parties as a way to get back into the devices market.Short-lived Nokia X Android phoneIn addition to a statement that Nokia is working on virtual reality, the relatively new information in the Re/code report is that Nokia smartp…

Soon All Google Ad Products Will Be Encrypted, Yahoo To Follow Suit

The “HTTPS Everywhere”movement aims to encrypt the web and has been something that both Google and Yahoo have publicly supported. Google started with Gmail back in 2008, and Yahoo just announced a fully secure end-to-end email experience. The focus for both Google and Yahoo is now headed towards Ads. Over the coming months, all Google Ad products from YouTube to AdWords will be encrypted and Yahoo’s following suit.Last year Google started with all YouTube ads going HTTPS. The remaining Google targets  are as follows with a roll out date of June 30th for all encryption:Display Ads (Google Display, AdMob &Double Click Publishers)
The “vast majority” of all mobile, video and desktop displays will be encrypted.Buying Platforms (AdWords, DoubleClick)
The platforms will have the ability to serve HTTPS-encrypted display ads to any inventory that is also HTTPS-enabled.
On the same note, Yahoo’s Trust & Safety team stated that Yahoo has committed to “what has been perhaps the largest-ever…

Gigya Q1 Report: Facebook Extends Social Login Advantage

Facebook continues to dominate the social media login market. Nearly two-thirds of people who use social networks to authenticate their identities on web sites and mobile apps use Facebook, according to customer management firm Gigya’s first quarter report.Gigya now puts Facebook’s share at 64%, an increase of three percentage points since the fourth quarter of 2014. It’s a familiar refrain. Facebook has improved its share by at least 2 percentage points in five consecutive Gigya reports and now leads Google+ by a record 43 percentage points.Google+, the only other provider in double digits, has a 21% share, slipping from the 22% it had last quarter. Twitter remained at 6%, while Yahoo dropped 1 percentage point to 5%.It should be noted that Gigya’s results — pulled from more than 300,000 sites and apps that use the company’s sign-on technology — differ from its competitors. Everyone’s data shows Facebook as the leader, but Janrain’s Q1 report had Facebook’s advantage over Google at 4…

Trademark Policing: Ninja Techniques Of Online Reputation Management

For medium-to-large companies, proper trademark management is a vital component of business strategy and online reputation management. Many consider a brand to be a company’s most valuable asset. As such, the core identifying marks of a company must be secured and policed, particularly on the Internet where consumers research products and engage in commerce. Here are some ninja-level tips for policing and proactively blocking infringement.Online reputation management (ORM) is often concerned with minimizing chances of defamation or mitigating it once it’s already occurring. But a more subtle and potentially riskier issue is when a trademark is infringed on or eroded and negated. It’s one thing to have some dirt thrown on your name — that can be potentially washed off later. It’s quite another to have your name stolen from you completely, or for it to be eroded down until it can no longer be protected. The Elements Of Good Trademark ManagementMost business and marketing schools teach a nu…

Marketers, Is Your Data Scalable?

While “big data” was once seen as a buzzword, the conversation has grown tremendously over the past several years. Data now holds the most critical role in our industry, due in part to the combination of new technologies that make the digital advertising landscape more complex, with consumers seeking real-time, relevant communications with brands. Now that data is the driver behind the majority of marketing efforts, marketers large and small are feeling the pressure to become more data-driven.One of the biggest trends I’m seeing in the industry is the division of companies with scale and companies without scale, and the differentiator between them is data. Data is the reason that scale matters — and that’s why marketers need to experiment and ask questions in order to know if their data is scalable. Why You Need To Use Data At ScaleThe more data you have access to — whether it’s just from running campaigns and buying media, or explicitly from curating multiple data sources — the more ef…
