The Nagging Little Question Of Conversion Optimization

The drop in conversion rate was sudden and deep. After months of testing, we had seen a steady increase in the number of leads that one website generated. Then, in one day, all of our progress had evaporated. The Conversion Scientist on the account saw the drop. He may have soiled his lab coat. Usually, such a drop can be traced to a break in the analytics tracking code. Then the client called, wondering what had happened to their robust lead flow. This was real. When we tracked down the cause of this catastrophe, we found the answer to a question that is hard to answer for most optimizers. The Nagging Question Of Conversion OptimizationThe best metric for measuring the success of a website optimization project is the ASF, or Accountant Smile Frequency. If the online business is growing and marketing costs aren’t, then the people watching such things smile. But there is always a nagging question in their mind: “How much of this gain was from optimization, and how much was from natural mark…

Twitter Porn Causes Nielsen To Pull Promoted Tweet Campaign

Twitter’s problem with porn caused Nielsen to pull a Promoted Tweet campaign this week. Nielsen temporarily halted advertising on Twitter after its promotional tweets showed up on several account profile pages that featured X-rated photos and video.Nielsen promos appeared on profiles called “Daily Dick Pictures” and “Homemade Porn.” Twitter ads aren’t supposed to display on profiles that post adult content. According to Adweek, which reported the story Tuesday, ads for Duane Reade, NBCUniversal and Gatorade also appeared adjacent to pornography.“As Twitter works to resolve this issue, we have temporarily suspended our campaign,” a Nielsen spokesman told Adweek.Twitter only started displaying ads on user profiles in the last few months and now indicates on its support pages that “Promoted Tweets will display on select user profiles that fit the targeting credentials configured for a campaign.”This is obviously a huge issue for Twitter and other social networks that traffic in user-gene…

Flickr Adds Smarter Search & Navigation Tools, Updates Mobile Apps

Yahoo’s overhaul of Flickr continues today with the launch of several new photo upload, organization and search tools that work together across devices. Flickr’s Android and iOS apps are also being updated today to reflect most of the new features.Today’s launches are aimed at making it easier for Flickr users to take advantage of that remarkable 1 terabyte of storage space that Flickr gave users almost two years ago. The upgrades involve three primary areas: photo uploading, organization and search.Photo UploadsFlickr is releasing a new desktop photo uploader for both Windows and Mac computers, but the bigger move here is the availability of auto-uploads on mobile devices. Users that take advantage of this will have all of their photos and videos sent to Flickr and synced across devices. Yahoo says it’ll eliminate any doubles it finds, and mark all the uploads as “private” on Flickr until the user chooses to make any public. Animate Your Social Media Marketing With GIFs

If pitted against each other in a popularity contest, animated GIFs would beat boring old JPEGs in a heartbeat these days. If you’ve been on the Internet at all lately, you’ve seen them: short, animated images that replay automatically on loop.Often clips from television shows or movies, animated GIFs have viral appeal, and thanks to Tumblr, have reached heightened popularity, especially in the United States in recent years.“Reaction GIFs,” which are animated GIFs used to express an emotional reaction to something in particular, are soaring in popularity. Check out Google Trends for the keyword “reaction gif.” Since March of 2010, the interest in reaction GIFs has continued to rise, peaking around this time last year. The forecast shows interest in reaction GIFs continuing to climb into April of 2016. (Google PR has even been known to respond to a request from a journalist with an animated GIF.)GIFs are so popular among my co-workers, in fact, my company had to start limiting companyw…

Windows 10 Reportedly the Last Version of Windows — Is Windows a Service Now?

Microsoft unveiled Windows 10, its forthcoming operating system for the desktop, mobile, Xbox, and IoT late last year. The Windows 10 moniker was interesting, as ideally, Microsoft was expected to call the successor to Windows 8 (and 8.1) as Windows 9. The Redmond-based company explained why it didn’t go with ‘Windows 9’: it would have created conflict with older versions of Windows. Alright, so what will the next version of Windows be called? Windows 10, apparently. At Ignite conference earlier this week, Jerry Nixon, a Microsoft Developer Evangelist, said that Windows 10 “is the last version of Windows (so we’re always working on Windows 10).” The company apparently isn’t going to release anymore versions of Windows as instead it plans to keep updating the existing version."Windows 10 is the last version of Windows so we're always working on Windows 10" – Jerry Nixon. Google Drive now lets you Edit Scanned Docs in 200+ Languages with its OCR Feature

Google Drive is an essential part of my daily work, as I use it to store things, to keep notes, and also to edit and create documents. It might not be (yet) as versatile as what Microsoft Office has got to offer, but there are plenty of features for the kind of work that I do. But Google Drive comes with another feature that you probably didn’t hear about – OCR, which stands for optical character recognition. The Optical Character Recognition feature has been available in in Google Drive for a while now, but maybe the reason you didn’t use it yet is because your language wasn’t supported. But now Google has announced a major update, letting upload scanned documents in more than 200 languages and 25 writing styles. The same update has been issued for the Google Drive app for Android users, as well. Making use of the OCR feature is very easy, and you just need to follow these steps:

Upload a scanned document in its current form (image or PDF)Right-click on the document in the Drive interf…

6 Dos And Don’ts Of Client Relations For Paid Search (Or Any Digital Marketing Discipline)

For many things in life, there is a right way of doing things and a wrong way. Pay-per-click client relations are no different, as account managers need to remain professional and steadfast in their management of paid search efforts. The best relationships can sustain dips in performance if account managers are honest and forthcoming with clients. The following are the six “Dos and Don’ts” of client relations from the account manager’s prospective. These recommendations come from my best (and worst) relationships over the years as well as from client feedback.Though these recommendations won’t apply to all account managers 100 percent of the time, they provide a good basis for long-term and successful client relations.Let’s start with a basic principle that is perhaps the most important for a solid foundation.1. Don’t Treat All Clients Alike; Do Adapt To Your Clients’ TendenciesSimply put, every client is different. This sentiment isn’t exactly breaking news, but I’ve seen many account…

Facebook Test Lets Users Pick Which Pages’ & Friends’ Posts Appear At Top Of News Feed

Facebook is experimenting with a News Feed algorithm override, testing a feature that allows people to select friends and pages whose posts they don’t want to miss. Posts from friends and pages given priority will appear on top of a person’s News Feed. The test, reported first by Social Times, is showing up for some mobile users who are served a box with an animated puppy and a “See more of what you love” prompt (screen grabs used with permission from Social Times).Tapping through leads to a screen displaying friends and pages with whom that person has connected. Posts from selected pages and people will be prioritized in the News Feed, as the dialog box states: “Their posts will appear at the top of your News Feed so you’ll never miss them.”A Facebook spokesperson confirmed in an email to Marketing Land that the company is running a small test.If fully rolled out, this would be a significant departure for Facebook, which typically serves News Feed content based on behavioral signals r…

Facebook: Smartwatches Are “Absolutely” An Advertising Opportunity

Facebook hasn’t launched an official Apple Watch app, but the company considers the device — and smartwatches, in general — an opportunity to show advertising to consumers.Dave Jakubowski, the head of ad technology at Facebook, told an audience at the Collision Conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday that smartwatches are “absolutely” an advertising opportunity. But he emphasized that the real challenge will be in developing an ad format that works in this environment.“Are [smartwatches] advertising opportunities? Absolutely,” he said. “But are the ads any good? Only if we evolve and make them good. We have to figure out how what our application does fits in the user’s world.”Although Apple’s early Watch demos included what looked like a beta version of an official Facebook app, it was actually an image of a basic Facebook notification that’s available now even without an official app. Facebook has yet to launch an app for the Apple Watch, and a spokesperson recently told Marketing Land th…
