Brand Networks To Buy Social Advertising Platform Shift For $50 Million

Social marketing and advertising software firm, Brand Networks, announced Thursday that it is acquiring Shift, a cross-network social advertising platform, for $50 million in cash and stock.“Social marketing has evolved to become equal parts art and science,” said Jamie Tedford, Founder and CEO of Boston-based Brand Networks. “Simply providing workflow for content publishing and ads is table stakes today. The new challenge for marketers is to unlock the power of data to achieve true relevance — getting to the right person with the right content, at the right time, on the right device. Beginning today, marketers can now use a single platform to break down the walls between disparate teams, data silos, and content types to deliver relevant content across Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.”Shift co-founder and CEO, James Borow, will join Brand Networks to serve as Chief Product Officer. The company also announced the addition of RelevanceRank as part of the integration. The technology measur…

Watch Out Mountain View, More Google Self-Driving Cars Are Coming To A Street Near You

Google is releasing prototypes of its self-driving car on the roads of Mountain View, California this summer.According to the announcement, the vehicle test runs will include safety drivers who can takeover driving if necessary, and speeds for the vehicles have been capped at 25-mph.Google says this phase of testing will help them better understand how the community interacts with the self-driving cars, and identify challenges. We’ve been running the vehicles through rigorous testing at our test facilities, and ensuring our software and sensors work as they’re supposed to on this new vehicle. While the company has come under fire recently for wrecks involving the 48 self-driving Google cars currently licensed to operate on California roads, Google says the new prototypes have more than 10,000 miles a week worth of drive-time, which equates to approximately 75 years worth of typical American adult driving experience.(Google responded to reports of its self-driving cars being involved in…

Pulverizing Price Resistance To Improve Conversion Rates

You have slaved over your product or service. You have executed creative marketing campaigns that drove results. You have researched and established a fair price. I guess your job as an online marketer is done!Actually, you are missing a key part of the conversion picture: price presentation. As it turns out, price presentation can have a huge impact on your conversion rate.Price Is PainMoney is an artificial construct. Our distant ancestors lived without it. Survival depended on getting access to resources such as food, water, shelter, and mating opportunities. All of these were scarce — once you used them up, they were no longer available. We have created the notion of money and embedded it deeply in our cultural matrix. But at the end of the day, money is just a convenient way for us to get access to the same kinds of resources as before. Our brains don’t know any different, and they use the same evolutionary machinery to evaluate spending. Money is viewed as an expenditure of import…

Like Google, Bing Is Planning To Reward Mobile Friendly Sites

A few weeks after Google launched their mobile friendly algorithm, Bing announced they will begin rolling out their version of the mobile friendly algorithm for Bing mobile search results in the upcoming months.Unlike Google, Bing did not give us a specific date for the launch. But what we do know is that this ranking algorithm will give a slight benefit to mobile friendly designed web sites in the Bing mobile results. Bing is downplaying the impact searchers or webmasters will see with this update, saying they are going to ensure this does not hurt relevancy and even web pages that are not mobile friendly but are extremely relevant, will remain ranking well.Google’s communication around their update was more scary, which is why the industry named it Mobilegeddon. Bing says this won’t be any sort of Mobilegeddon, instead, they will work closely with webmasters to roll this out with the least amount of impact. We covered this Bing mobile friendly algorithm update in greater detail on ou…

[Report] European Mobile Carriers Consider Targeting Google By Blocking Mobile Ads

The Financial Times reported Thursday that several European mobile carriers plan to block advertising as a way to stand up to the likes of Google, Yahoo and AOL, but primarily Google. The report cites anonymous sources from mobile carriers stating that they plan to activate ad blocking software from Shine, an Israeli-based firm, now installed in their data centers that can keep ads from displaying on the web and in apps, but not the types of in-stream ads used by social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. The Financial Times says “An executive at a European mobile operator confirmed that it and several of its peers are planning to start blocking adverts this year.” It will reportedly launch as an opt-in service for users, but the executive also said the company is considering applying the ad blocking software network-wide.The aim, according to the source, is “to specifically target Google, blocking advertising on its websites in attempt to force the company into giving up a cut of it…

Sad To See You Go: The Impact Of Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation On Subscriber Rates

It came as no surprise that the Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) was going into effect. Although rumors were circulating about the new policy as early as 2010, it’s been imperative since 2012 that marketers understand how they would need to adapt — and this understanding is still prevalent today.CASL is aimed at regulating electronic messages — email, instant message, SMS, and so on — and affects how consent is defined and collected. Any business (American, Canadian or other) that sends a message to or from Canada must follow these regulations.Once marketers began to understand CASL, every company’s intention was to push customers to continue receiving email from their brand. Marketers took many approaches to educating subscribers about CASL:The simple one-sentence caption: “The new CASL laws have required us to receive consent.”Coupon incentives for in-store promotions.A comical or a creative play on the brand image. As a Canadian, I knew exactly what was happening when I receive…

Gionee Elife E8 Rumored to Get a 23MP Rear-camera that can Take 100MP Photos

At the Mobile World Congress from this year in Barcelona we’ve seen Gionee take the stage to announce its slim Elife S7 smartphone. With this new device, the company has added a new handset in its ‘Style’ family of products, but it’s still expected to come up with a successor to the Elife E7, which has been announced way back in the end of 2013. The ‘E’ line of products from Gionee are known for their impressive cameras and if recent rumors are true, then the upcoming Elife E8 is about to get a mammoth one. The smartphone had recently hit the Chinese regulatory agency TENAA, being revealed at the time that the phone will come with a 23MP rear camera. And if 23MP doesn’t sound like too much (even if the quality of pictures isn’t necessarily about the number of megapixels…), what about pictures with a 100MP resolution? If this becomes a real thing, then it will be the first time for a smartphone camera to be capable of such a feat. And if the leaked picture from the right with the device…

Google’s Self-Driving Cars to Hit Public Roads This Summer

If smartphones, tablets and the overall computing industry doesn’t give you the feeling that we’re living in the future, then what about cars that will be able to take you where you want on its own? This isn’t happening next year, and maybe not in the following 5 or 10, but we’re already witnessing the early days of this technology, thanks to Google and its self-driving car project.Google has announced through a blog post that its self-driving cars have been given the green light by authorities to circulate on public roads in Mountain View, California this summer. According to Project Director Chris Urmson, the prototype vehicles will have safety drivers present and will have a capped speed of 25mph. He further added:We’ve been running the vehicles through rigorous testing at our test facilities, and ensuring our software and sensors work as they’re supposed to on this new vehicle. We’re looking forward to learning how the community perceives and interacts with the vehicles, and to un…

Raspberry Pi Slashes Price of B+ Model to $25, Here’s How You Can Purchase One

It wasn’t too long ago when computers used to be bulky, filling halls worth of space and cost us millions of dollars. But as chemist Gordon Moore predicted 50 years, with the advent of microelectronics, we became capable of packing in more transistors into an integrated circuit, which in turn also dramatically decreased the cost of circuits.Fast forward to 2012, and we had Apple making crazy-thin laptops that could easily be packed in an envelope. Rival companies and many experts at the time were busy taking potshots at the Cupertino-based giant, but in the years to come we would find all of these to shamelessly follow the route Apple had paved in front of them. This was also the year Raspberry Foundation released Pi, a credit card-sized computer that when connected to an external display would run an actual modern operating system. This blew everyone’s mind and gleaned a lot of appreciation from everywhere. Three years down the line, Raspberry has the second generation of Pi available…

OnePlus One Touchscreen Issues Might Passé With the New Firmware Updates

Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus seems to have finally fixed the widely noted touchscreen performance issues in its One smartphone. The company rolled out the fix in the recently seeded out updates by the Cyanogen Inc software firm.Often referred to as the “flagship killer of 2014,” the OnePlus One is one heck of a great smartphone to ignore. It packs in the top-of-the-line hardware modules coupled with software from Cyanogen Inc.But as impressive as the OnePlus One is, it too comes riddled with a few glitches here and there. As we pointed out earlier this week, there are a number of issues the phone ships with leaving users confused about many a things. It took the company six months to finally come up with fixes for the numerous touch screen related issues its phone has. To just give you an idea, the original thread where users shared their ordeal was recently closed by the company after it reached 125 pages.Besides the sluggish touchscreen quirps including scrolling issue, a …

Zuckerberg To SMBs: Facebook Pages Are Still The Best Way To Reach Consumers

Near the end of his town hall Q&A Thursday, a small business owner asked Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg the question that marketers keep asking:“Given the decline in organic reach, how should businesses like ours or any business think about the role of Pages?”Zuckerberg gave the answer that Facebook keeps giving, saying that it continually adjusts the News Feed algorithm to make sure people see the posts they are interested in seeing and that because some people prefer not to see commercial messages, business Pages aren’t reaching as many people as they once were. But despite that, Zuckerberg said, there’s no better way to reach customers.“Regardless of the changes that we’ve made, Facebook actually is still the best way to distribute stuff to all of the people that you are trying reach and all your customers,” he said. “Probably all your customers, or most of them, are on Facebook and you probably have more connections on Facebook than any other tool, so I actually think that even i…

Video Streaming Services are Messing Up With our Green Planet

Do you love binge watching shows on Netflix? Are you an active Hulu subscriber and watch everything on the web? Do you find cat videos (or anything else for that matter) on YouTube too addictive? The next time you do it, just keep in mind that your viewing habit is screwing our green planet.Environment watchdog group Greenpeace has published a transparency report to reveal the amount of resources different internet companies and their services are hogging, and its adverse effect on our planet. Each service on the web — whether it is letting users buy gadgets online or watch videos — invests a lot of energy in data centers. Many companies, including Apple and Facebook are aware of this, and have taken big steps to opt for renewable sources like solar and hydro to power their data centers, but there are many that still rely on traditional channels. The biggest driver of consumer internet data is online video. There has been a significant increase of video-enabled mobile devices in the las…
