Digital Forecast: A Data-Protection Storm Is Brewing In Europe

If you are like me and keep a close eye on all things related to the future of digital media, then you may remember a conversation from the late spring of 2012 when the Dutch government enacted a law that strictly defined the use of digital cookies. At the time, there were fears that this law would be spread and adopted all over Europe with effects reaching the U.S. (For some more background, this story does a great job of defining the law enacted in 2012.)You also may have heard about the great “Do Not Track” debates in the U.S. in 2013 — which then got quieter, and folks rallied around the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) and the opt-out system. (More information can be found at Your AdChoices.)However, apparently in Europe the conversation has carried on much longer without a definitive conclusion. But one is coming…In the European Union, regulators have spent the last three years “educating” themselves about the issue, and recently decided that they’ve learned enough and now is t…

Google Says Micro-Moments Are The New Path To Purchase

Last month, when Google announced several mobile-centric updates for AdWords — shiny image-based ads for car manufacturers and hotels, among them — the company said the updates were in response to mobile’s impact on the way consumers are making purchasing decisions.  This week, Google released new stats on what this behavior looks like.As mobile’s share of web sessions has increased 20 percent in the past year, the time spent per visit has fallen by 18 percent, according to the company. Users dart on and dart off their phones to find information, but Google also says that mobile conversion rates have also increased by 29 percent, aggregated Google Analytics data shows.AdWords head, Jerry Dischler, has explained that if we thought there was a linear customer journey before, that idea is now dead. Rather than dedicating periods of time to researching products on a desktop or laptop, we now turn to our phones in a series of small time increments, says Google. The company is calling this …

Report: 89% Of Marketers Have Problems With Cross -Channel Marketing, Data Linkage Is The Biggest Culprit

The holy grail of digital marketers is the single customer view that can unlock the potential of personalization and the insights into consumer behavior. A new study from Experian however shows that connecting these dots isn’t easy. A whopping 89% of respondents admitted that they have challenges when trying to create a single customer view. The biggest culprits that hinder the creation of a customer view are poor data quality, the siloing of departments, the inability to link different technologies and the lack of technical tools. The biggest problem in cross-channel tracking specifically is the inability to link (32% of marketers reported as having problems) followed by the company’s technology (31%) and the overall organizational structure (31%).The end result of these customer view issues is an uncoordinated, unaligned marketing effort. Even though date linkage and a unified view are problematic, companies are still trying to customize their efforts. Experian reports that 82% of mar…

How to Make the Windows 10 Update Icon Appear in the Taskbar

As you may have already heard, Windows 10 is due to launch pretty soon. In order to celebrate this long-awaited event, Microsoft has decided to create a bit of expectation, by offering Windows 7 and Windows 8 users a pre-reservation chance. Basically, everyone running one of the two Windows versions should have noticed a small, Windows-like icon, in the right-hand corner of the screen, gently notifying customers that they can book an early spot in the upcoming madness . This symbol should have been spotted for either genuine or pirated platforms but as we’ve always thought, there is a catch. Now, this icon itself actually represents the Windows 10 Update App, which is only available to users that have turned on the automated update process, as Microsoft itself advises. More specifically, Microsoft requires two basic optional updates to be installed on the system, for both Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 platforms. Getting these two on board is not a hustle, but even them some readers hav…

Bummer! Windows 10 Home Users Won’t Get to Decide What Updates They Install and When

Microsoft announced earlier this week that it will be releasing some versions of Windows 10 on July 29. The Redmond-based company also revealed the minimum hardware requirements a computer needs to possess in order to upgrade to the forthcoming operating system. A blog post on the site also reveals several interesting information such as listing the Windows 7 and Windows 8.x features the new version of the desktop operating system won’t ship with, as well as an upgrade policy. The upgrade policy in question, however, is deterring.Microsoft notes that it will be offering Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise users with the ability to decide when they want to update their system, as well as provide them with the ability to decide which updates they want to install. This isn’t anything new. The company has had always allowed users to have full control over how they want their system to update. But it plans to change that with Windows 10 — at least for some users. The company mentions t…

Review: Asus ZenFone 2 – The Rahul Dravid of Smartphones

Asus had surprised us all very pleasantly with the ZenFone 5 last year. Priced below Rs 10,000, the device nevertheless was a brilliant performer, and outshone even the likes of the Moto G. It was an outstanding product, but was squarely aimed at the budget smartphone market segment. Well, its successor, the ZenFone 2 (we got the ZE551 ML, with 4GB RAM, 32 GB storage model and are referring to it throughout the review) has slightly higher aspirations – it pretty much aims to mix it up with the likes of the flagship challengers, like the Xiaomi Mi 4, the Honor 6 and the OnePlus One. Oh yes, the aspiration ante has been well and truly upped – if the ZenFone 5 was aimed at being your first decent smartphone, its successor is looking to be one of the best around in tech town.Memories of the Wall…And guess what, it actually succeeds in that very lofty aim. Which brings us to an explanation of that headline we have used, as it might have confused those who do not follow the game of cricket …
