Google Looks to Improve Chrome’s Power Consumption by Tweaking Flash Content

Google’s Chrome browser is considered to be among the fastest browsers around, but it could soon have some serious competition in the form of Microsoft’s upcoming Edge browser. But unlike speed, power consumption isn’t an area where Google’s browser claims too many merits. However, that is about to change as the company is looking to diminish Chrome’s battery draining. In order to achieve that, Google is partnering up with Adobe to “intelligently pause content (like Flash animations) that aren’t central to the webpage, while keeping central content (like a video) playing without interruption“.A few weeks back, we reported on a AMA that the Google Chrome team did on Reddit. Back then they acknowledged that they are working on reducing Chrome’s battery usage. And this announcement is a first important effort in that direction. Thus, with this new option, when you’re on a webpage that runs Flash, Chrome will intelligently pause content  that isn’t crucial to the webpage’s content. You can …

Bloomua / Shutterstock.com A year in, Google is bringing its brand lift measurement solution for YouTube ads to mobile and expanding metrics it measures to include lift in consideration, favorability and purchase intent. With over half of YouTube’s traffic coming from mobile, Brand Lift measurement is now available for ads served on YouTube’s mobile app.The new metrics captured in the surveys are aimed a telling advertisers more about how their ads resonated with users, including whether an ad broke through with consumers, increased brand awareness or favorability as well as a lift in purchase intent.Google says that in the year since Brand Lift launched, it has conducted more than 10,000 survey studies on YouTube campaigns. Yahoo Opens Up To Third-Party Measurement For Fraud, Viewability

Yahoo said, this week, that it is now offering brands independent verification on display and video advertising for both viewability and fraud measurement. In addition to Yahoo’s own MRC-accredited viewability tool, Prime View, advertisers can use third-party solutions such as comScore, DoubleVerify, Integral Ad Science and Moat.“At Yahoo, we believe advertisers should have the flexibility to verify viewability and fraud levels with the tools of their choice,” Dennis Buchheim, VP of product management at Yahoo, “which is why we’re partnering with leading, independent measurement companies to give our customers the confidence they deserve when running campaigns on our inventory and across the web.”Asked whether Yahoo was following the IAB’s recommended viewability threshold of 70 percent of impressions for make good purposes, Buchheim said by email, “Yes. That said, we are flexible to the clients’ needs; we have and continue to accommodate 100 percent viewable impression campaigns usin…

Skype’s Web-based Client is now Available to Select Users in Open Beta

Starting from today, anyone in the US or UK can now go to Skype.com or web.skype.com and connect to the official Skype for Web service instead of having to download the app. I imagine that this could be especially useful when you’re not working from your machine or when you don’t want to be logged out from the account you’re using on the desktop app.The Web beta is available for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers, but it might just work with others, as well. Skype for Web comes with its traditional video and audio calling and instant messaging but also with syncing of your conversations from other devices and easy search. The service will be rolling out worldwide “in the next few weeks” and if you’ll try to download it now, you’ll get the image from below as a response.A small drawback with the new product is that it still requires a plugin to make calls, but there’s hope that a future version will be powered by the WebRTC standard which removes the need for a speci…

Google’s European President Brittin Undertakes New Charm Offensive

Google seems to be striking a more humble and conciliatory tone in Europe — out of necessity. Eric Schmidt, the primary face of Google in Europe, now appears to be stepping aside in favor of Matt Brittin, a UK native and the head of Google’s European operations.Schmidt can be charming but can also come off as insufficiently concerned about the different values and standards of Europeans. The fact that he’s an American doesn’t help. With multiple investigations and complaints against Google throughout Europe and settlement negotiations at something of an impasse, the company appears to have decided to pursue a different course.Politico conducted a wide-ranging interview with Brittin (whose name is symbolic of the new approach). While Google has always said it wants work out negotiated solutions in Europe, Brittin signaled a more “respectful” approach:Matt Brittin, who oversees Google’s European activities, said in his first interview addressing the anti-trust charges lodged against the …

Momentum is a Beautiful Chrome Extension which Fills the New Tab Page with your Tasks, Weather and Images

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always wondered how I could make my New Page tab in Chrome more useful. Being my most used browser, I use all of its feature, such as search from the address bar, thumbnails of most visited websites and the apps. However, I wouldn’t have said no to more customization and luckily there’s an extension which can help with that.Momentum for Chrome will give new powers to your New Page tab in Chrome, if I can put it that way. The extension replaces your new tab page in Chrome with what it call a ‘personal dashboard’ featuring tasks, weather, and inspiration. After you install it, you will be asked to signup with your email and then you will start setting up the New Page tab.You will be able to set your focus for the day and every time you will open a new tab, it will remind you of what you want to achieve in that day. It also lets you see the weather for your area and comes with a todo list which tracks your tasks, as well. What I like the most is the clean…

This Lacoste Interactive Tennis Match Doubles As An E-commerce Clothing Site

In February, Lacoste created a series of Instagram and Vine videos to introduce a new tennis racket and fashion line. This week, working with Fred & Farid Shanghai, the brand has launched a mobile- and desktop-based “lookbook.”The effort, designed to promote the limited edition LT12 line launch in China, is timed to coincide with the French Open, aka Roland-Garros, currently taking place in Paris. The lookbook features models sporting Lacoste fashion. But that’s not all they’re doing. They’re actually at a tennis match, and if you move the cursor (on the desktop) or your finger (on mobile) across the screen, you can move a tennis ball around the screen and the models’ heads will turn to follow the ball.In addition to that game-watching spectacle, items worn by the models can be clicked and purchased directly from within the game. Humorously, each time a product runs out, the model appears half-naked.Here’s the mobile site. Note the position of the tennis ball in the lower center of…

How To Create A Website’s Nomenclature (Or Labeling System) For Online Findability

One of the key components of a website’s information architecture (IA) is an effective nomenclature or labeling system. According to Wikipedia, a nomenclature is a system of names or terms, or the rules for forming these terms. In website design and development, there are essentially three different types of labels:Document labelsContent labelsNavigation labelsAll three of these labels are important to both users and technology. A label can communicate to users what content is about. A label can be used to describe a section of a website. And a label can also convey information scent. The scent of information addresses the following questions:Where can I go? (clear navigation)Where am I now? (orientation)Can I tell that I have arrived at my destination? (arrival)How can I get to the destination that has my desired content? (route selection)Should I click on this link? (content value)As a search engine optimizer, I know that a website’s labeling system should contain keywords. And as a …

The Cost Of Keeping A Brand Advocate Onboard And Engaged

In last month’s column, I discussed how your brand can convert subscribers into salespeople. But moving people from the subscriber category to the brand advocate category is just the beginning of the advocacy lifecycle. Now that you have identified brand influencers and defined rewards packages, how do you maintain engagement beyond the initial interaction? And just as importantly, how do you determine how much budget to allocate for email campaign and incentives that will motivate advocates to stay engaged?Keeping Brand Advocates On BoardLong-term brand advocacy is an elusive goal for a lot of brands. It’s difficult enough to bring committed brand advocates into the fold. But keeping them in the fold presents an entirely new set of challenges. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: If your advocates don’t continue to experience satisfaction and value, they aren’t going to remain loyal to your brand. It’s important to keep advocates engaged through tailored content that encourages them to part…

The Chromebook Q&A: Everything You Wanted to Know About Chromebooks

Google launched a new range of Chromebooks in India recently. And while we will be reviewing a few of them, we have also been deluged by questions about what a Chromebook actually is and how it is different and/or better than existing notebooks. Here is our attempt at answering some of these queries.Right, so what is a Chromebook?Simple. It is a notebook that runs on Google’s Chrome operating system (OS). Chrome OS + Notebook = ChromebookWait, Chrome is an OS?! I thought it was browser.Yes, it is a browser. But it is an operating system too. The first Chromebooks were seen in 2011.So means it is like Windows and Mac OS?Well, to be honest, yes and no. Yes, it is an operating system in its own right, so the device runs on Chrome OS. However, unlike Windows and Mac OS, Chrome is designed for working with the cloud. Working on Chrome OS is like working inside one massive browser – well, a bit like the Chrome browser actually.Wait, so if it is like working with a browser, why don’t I just …

Adbreaks is a Cool App That Helps You Avoid TV Channels That Are Showing Ads

“Men flip around the television more than women, I think. Men get that remote control in their hands, they don’t even know what the hell they’re watching,” Jerry Seinfeld famously noted in NBC’s popular TV show Seinfeld. “You know, we just keep going, ‘Rerun, don’t wanna watch it..’ ‘What are you watching?’ ‘I don’t care, I gotta keep going.’ ‘Who was that?’ ‘I don’t know what it was – doesn’t matter, it’s not your fault. It doesn’t matter, I gotta keep going.”Jokes apart, watching TV has become frustratingly annoying. Sure we now have more TV channels than before, but the overlords keep increasing the frequency of ads. And man, are those ads annoying? On the Web, you have many options to block, and bypass ads and similar annoyances. There’s a moral obligation which should stop you from doing that, but at least nobody’s taking away that option. On TV, however, there isn’t much one can do except sit and watch an awful amount of ads who in return sip peace from your life.Thankfully, som…

Facebook Removes Always-on Location Sharing Feature From Messenger Mobile app

Facebook announces today that it is updating the Messenger app to give users full control over when and how they want to share their location information. The move comes days after a college student babbled about the concerning amount of location information Facebook’s Messenger app shares.Facebook’s Messenger mobile app is one of the most popular instant messaging apps out there. Connecting over 600 million users every month, the app allows users to text to their friends and other people on the social network, as well as make free voice calls. But what many don’t know is that the app was also constantly sharing information about their whereabouts. Previously the messaging client, by default, would share location information of users, and this data was available to all of their friends and members of the groups they are part of.Harvard student Aran Khanna recently shared his findings on a blog post titled “Stalking your friends with Facebook Messenger.” In the post, Khanna revealed th…
