FTC Puts Social Media Marketers On Notice With Updated Disclosure Guidelines

If you hire celebrities or influencers to talk up your brand or if you hold contests with promotional tie-ins to social media, it might be time for a proper-disclosure check up.That’s because the Federal Trade Commission, the agency that enforces U.S. truth-in-advertising laws, appears to be sending get-tougher signals.Late last month, the FTC updated the “What People Are Asking” page for its Endorsement Guides for the first time since 2010. The FTC’s basic message — that material relationships between brand and endorser on social media must be “clearly and conspicuously” disclosed — hasn’t changed. But FTC is now getting more specific with detailed guidance about social media issues that weren’t on the agency’s radar five years ago. That specificity makes it likely that the FTC will crack down in the coming months, says Allison Fitzpatrick, an attorney in the advertising, marketing and promotions practice group at Manhattan-based law firm Davis & Gilbert.Fitzpatrick says she has b…

Report: Time With Apps Growing But Number Of Apps Used Is Not

While time spent with apps has grown dramatically, the number of apps used by people on a monthly basis has not. That’s according to new data released by Nielsen. The measurement firm says monthly time with mobile apps, “has increased from 23 hours and two minutes in fourth-quarter 2012 to 37 hours and 28 minutes in fourth-quarter 2014—a 63 percent rise in two years.” However Nielsen also explains that more than 70 percent of app usage is concentrated in the top 200 apps. The average US smartphone owner uses just under 27 apps per month, a figure that has been fairly stable over the past two years according to Nielsen. The company adds that men use slightly more apps per month (27.2 vs. 26.3) while women spend roughly an hour more per month in apps.African-Americans use more apps per month on average and spend more time with them than other ethnic groups, according to Nielsen. By contrast, Whites use the fewest number of apps and spend the least amount of time in them.Nielsen explained …

BlackBerry Plans to Release an Android Smartphone: Rumor

BlackBerry’s business is slowly recovering, as the company has ended the fourth quarter of 2014 on a $28 million profit. However, it was the company’s software division which played a major role in the revenue increase, and not its hardware division. And while this shift of strategy is good for the company, it’s not helping it recover its iconic image of a reputable phone maker. Now a fresh report coming from Reuters is suggesting that BlackBerry could actually consider making an Android smartphone. We’ve seen Nokia in a similar position, but the Finish company only went half-Android and it ultimately decided to nix it. So could BlackBerry be looking at a similar approach or it wants to go full Android? The problem, in my opinion, is that when you buy a BlackBerry phone, the software weighs a lot in your decision, being part of the whole experience. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think the hardware is as important with BlackBerry as is its OS and what it can do. And we’ve seen that in its…

Asus Tipped to be Interested in Buying HTC

HTC has been widely regarded as a ‘struggling’ company even from two years ago, and even now the company doesn’t seem to have found ‘its way’. As we were saying back in April, the company seems to be lost in the past, as it keeps pushing new devices that have a too familiar look. Now, a fresh report coming from business publication Reuters seems to be suggesting that Taiwanese company Asus could actually be interested in taking over the company. Of course, this is actually a bold statement, but that’s how these deals usually get born – from an idea, a hearsay or somebody’s hot beans spilled all over. This time, it’s apparently Asus’ CEO Johnny Shih who made the comment in response to questions raised at its annual general meeting. The information has been supplied to Reuters by the Chief Financial Officer David Chang, a top-executive at the company, so this information is coming from the lances’ tip. What in fact Asus said is that it has not ruled out the possibility of acquiring HTC. He…

Cards Are Fueling In-Stream Ad Growth & Transforming Digital Advertising

In-stream native advertising is thriving with the rise of mobile, but it’s cards that will keep propelling growth in ad spend. Cards have changed the way we experience digital content, and now they are transforming the way we experience and interact with digital advertising. And, as YouTube is demonstrating, ad cards aren’t just for in-stream any more; they can be used in video and beyond for branding and performance advertising. What Are Cards?Cards are containers that can house just about any type of content, from text to gifs to video to audio and more. They have become a familiar design construct with the rise of mobile, in part, because cards can adapt to suit any size screen. Cards also make content digestible on small screens and are tailor made for our increasingly short attention spans and desire to consume information as quickly as possibly.Remember when tweets could only be 140 characters of plain old text? Cards allow users to embed images, video, gifs and more in their twe…

Spotted: Twitter Tests A Richer Location Specific Search Page

The allure of Twitter has always been collaborative real-time info delivered instantly. A new feature that was spotted in the wild adds a geographic “place” layer to the mix – pooling top tweets, photos and videos from a specific location. This new test spotted by VentureBeat shows clickable place links with individual Tweets. By clicking on this location link a user is whisked along to the main place page where they can view top Tweets, a Livestream, accounts, photos, videos, or news.  A live example of a specific place page for San Francisco can be found here. This is a fuller featured product than simply using traditional Twitter search. Instead, it is a better representation of crowd-sourced local news that looks to rely less on specific location-centric keywords to display Tweets than a traditional Twitter search. For more information, see VentureBeat. Twitter Will Increase DM Character Limit From 140 To 10,000

Twitter will no longer limit direct messages to 140 characters.Starting in July, the maximum length of DMs — Twitter’s private messaging feature — will be boosted to 10,000 characters. The company announced the change in a post in its developers forum and a tweet by DM product manager Sachin Agarwal:We're removing the 140 character limit in DMs this July. If you are a developer, check out API documentation here: https://t.co/G5I3LmxLG6— Sachin Agarwal (@agarwal) June 11, 2015 Public tweets — and tweets from private accounts — will continue to be limited to the 140-character standard. No exact date was announced for next month’s switchover, which should be a welcome change for brands that use Twitter as a customer service tool. Currently, the back-and-forth discussion between customer and business via DM is often cumbersome, requiring people to split their conversation into a series of messages. After the change, people will have plenty of space to explain their issues. The post Twitt…
