Twitter’s Project Lightning Will Put A Curated Spin On Live News Events

Twitter is working on a major new live news feature that by the end of the year could make it easier for people to follow events on the social communications network.Called Project Lightning and revealed today in a post by Mat Honan in BuzzFeed News, the new product will feature curated streams of event-based content and have a prominent place in an upcoming update of Twitter’s mobile apps. In keeping with Twitter’s efforts to maximize audience on and off its network, Project Lightning content will also be viewable for people who aren’t logged into Twitter, on Twitter.com, the mobile web and in embeds on other web pages. Here’s how BuzzFeed described Project Lightning, which is expected to launch later this year:On Twitter’s mobile app, there will be a new button in the center of the home row. Press it and you’ll be taken to a screen that will show various events taking place that people are tweeting about. These could be based on prescheduled events like Coachella, the Grammys, or the…

In Search Of The New “Mad Men”: Will They Be At Cannes This Year?

If Don Draper popped up at the Cannes Lions conference this year, he’d find himself dreadfully out of place.Draper, the prototypical ad genius chronicled in Matthew Weiner’s “Man Men’” television series, is now cultural shorthand for a bygone era in post-1945 America. But Draper and his cohort cast also represent a bygone era in marketing — an era when brands relied almost exclusively on agencies to create their advertising campaigns to market their products to the public.A New EraThis creative process has forever changed in the era of pervasive digital and data, where customers lead, where brands cannot interrupt, where brands must engage in developing a real relationship with customers — or perish. It occurs to me that, just as faithful TV watchers of the now-ended series are seeking their next new chapter and set of characters, CMOs everywhere are looking for their new “Mad Men” to help them succeed in this very new and different world. As Marketo’s chief marketing officer, I’m at Can…

Report: Conversion & Add-To-Cart Rates Have Been Declining For A Year

With the exception of a fourth quarter holiday bump, conversion rates and add-to-cart rates have been falling over the past year, according to a new report from Monetate. The Q1 2015 Ecommerce Quarterly report, which analyzes a random sample of more than 7 billion online shopping experiences using “same store” data across each calendar quarter, shows these declines happening in spite of the average number of product pages viewed per session going up — from 2.09 a year ago to 2.28 — year-over-year in the first quarter of 2015.Overall, average conversion rates have fallen from 2.54 percent in Q1 2014 to 2.32 percent in Q1 2015. Add-to-cart rates have dropped from 8.31 percent a year ago to 7.39 percent in the first quarter of this year.Below is a chart from the report showing conversion rate benchmarks by device over the past five quarters. (The report also has a chart showing conversion rate by operating system.) Note that tablet conversion rates have actually gone up year-over-year in …

Buyer Behavior Trends Driving The Digital Shift Toward Mobile

Buyer behavior is rapidly changing and forcing brands across all verticals to adjust and conform to the interactive world. Nearly every consumer activity has shifted to digital in some way — from listening to music, to shopping, to booking restaurant reservations, and so on.Mary Meeker, a partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, recently pointed out in her annual “State of the Internet” address that mobile Internet usage is growing faster than Internet usage in general, up 23 percent compared with just 8 percent. In addition, the mobile ad industry as a whole grew 34 percent year over year, while desktop digital advertising only grew 11 percent. These statistics prove that there is a clear shift in the way digital channels are being utilized, which means that brands must adapt and evolve their way of reaching consumers. We’re living in a consumer-driven market, and buyers’ trends will continue to shape the way that brands do business with their customers ac…

Third-Party Data Is Awesome, But Maybe Too Powerful

Third-party data is the most controversial data source available to marketers. The market for data is in constant flux, and we can expect it to change a lot in the future.Third-party data is data you can act on that comes from other providers. It’s not your own user data, nor is it coming to you from direct relationships or publishers. A media owner might segment its readers into “entertainment” vs. “politics” vs. “gossip” and make those segments available to buy against.Somebody like Experian might take its detailed financial understanding of people, combine it with their location and browsing behavior, and try to create a “best guess” profile for other users. You can then layer that data over your inventory to buy ads in a more targeted fashion.Like first- and third-party data, third-party data acts like a series of filters. Each additional data source you apply helps you to narrow down your targeting, improve your bidding accuracy, or write ads that are more relevant to the people …

Can Be Premium? Micromax’s Canvas Sliver Gambit!

There was an audible gasp of surprise in the room when Micromax CEO Vineet Taneja revealed the price of the latest device from the company. “This is a trick. He is going to make the numbers roll down to a lower figure,” one of the bloggers in the crowd whispered. Well, he did not.If you had told us a year ago that Micromax would be launching a device which would be taking on all comers on design and after sales service, we would have insisted you have your breath analysed for traces of alcohol and your blood tested for more advanced intoxicants. And yet, a few hours ago, that is exactly what the company unveiled. The Canvas Sliver 5 which was launched today by Micromax, is relatively modest specced by recent standards – a 4.8 inch 720p display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB storage (non expandable), an 8.0-megapixel rear camera and a 5.0-megapixel front facing one, and a single SIM slot that supports 4G. And yet it comes at a price of Rs 17,999, which is more than …

Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 with Snapdragon 410, 2GB RAM and 5.1mm Thickness Launched at Rs.17,999

Much like we had expected, Microsoft launched its next flagship smartphone, the Canvas Sliver 5. Claiming to be the world’s slimmest smartphone, the Canvas Sliver 5 houses mediocre specs in superiorly thin chassis, for a best buy price of Rs.17,999 (~$280).The Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 isn’t technically the slimmest smartphone, as we have seen phones smiler than 5mm in the past, but Micromax claims that they are misleading and not really that slim all over. At 97 grams, the Sliver 5 is also claimed to be the lightest smartphone in the world, making it the world’s slimmest and lightest 4G smartphone – something we reserve our judgment on.The Canvas Sliver 5 is made from aircraft grade aluminum. It comes with Dirac HD sound and NXP Smart Power Amplifier providing louder sound and deeper bass. The 4.8-inch Super AMOLED screen has HD (720p) resolution and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen over it. The phone is powered by the 64-bit 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core proc…

Serious iPhone Security Flaw Could Allow Hackers to Steal All Your Passwords

No matter how many security precautions one doesn’t take, there’s still the risk of being hacked or having your information exposed to malevolent parties. The most recent event which comes to my mind is when Russian security firm Kaspersky Lab got hacked, a reputed maker of antivirus software. It seems that the hackers have gone as far as to steal certificates from Foxconn in order to redirect computer traffic. So, if it can happen to a well-known security company whose job is to protect customers from all over the world, then this means we are exposed to the danger in any moment. Of course, this only means that tech companies need to beat the hackers at their own game and seriously improve their current protection technology. But until that happens, we have another fresh report which talks about a major security breach in Apple’s yard.According to The Register, a group of six researchers from renowned universities have discovered that Apple’s iOS and OS X have significant zero-day sec…

OnePlus 2 Confirmed to Come with Snapdragon 810 SoC and OxygenOS

In a style true to their self, OnePlus has started revealing the hardware specifications of its upcoming OnePlus 2 smartphone. In a thread posted to the official forum, Pete Lau, the company founder has confirmed that the next flagship will carry the infamous Snapdragon 810 processor from Qualcomm. There have been several leaks and rumors over the hardware components of OnePlus 2, one of which had claimed that the phone will carry the Snapdragon 810 along with 3GB of RAM. This is in line with that rumor, although OnePlus hasn’t confirmed the RAM present on the smartphone yet.Snapdragon 810 has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, with Samsung infamously putting down the processor while launching Galaxy S6, saying that the processor gets warmer beyond normal. Qualcomm tried to do some damage control by getting few other OEMs to vouch for Snapdragon 810. Although LG announced the G Flex 2 with Snapdragon 810, the Korean company took a step back and came out with the Snapdragon 808…

42 Percent Of Programmatic Buyers Still Get Reporting In Spreadsheet Attachments

While programmatic has brought automation to buying and selling of digital advertising, buyers say reporting from ad exchanges often isn’t keeping pace. In a survey of major programmatic buyers and DSPs by Metamarkets, which provides analytics for programmatic advertising, 42 percent of respondents said they still get bid request data from ad exchanges through attached spreadsheets and more than half (52 percent) said it was too difficult to analyze the data for insights.Source: MetaMarkets The report notes that while there are ongoing discussions about a lack of transparency in the programmatic industry, getting clear, actionable visibility into the reporting when it is provided is a fundamental challenge.Metamarkets suggests that this “visibility gap” is felt by the industry in throttled spends, lower auction competition, lower fill rates, and reduced revenue for publishers.A COO at a major DSP responded in the survey, “One of the world’s largest exchanges provides a dated spreadsheet…
