Google Could Face Deterrent-Sized Fines In EU Antitrust Case

With April’s antitrust charges related to Google’s handling of its comparison shopping product, the European Union told the search giant that it could face fines significant enough to act as a deterrent, Bloomberg is reporting. The “Statement of Objections” issued in April, Bloomberg reports, states that the European Commission “intends to set the fine at a level which will be sufficient to ensure deterrence,” adding that the Commission “considers that, based on the facts described in this statement of objections, Google committed the infringement intentionally or, at the very least, negligently.”The Commission has been investigating Google for anti-trust infringements since 2010, prodded by competitors such as Microsoft that claim the company favors its own products and services in Google search results. The regulator also continues to investigate Google’s treatment of other specialized search engines, such as maps and local search, and has opened a formal investigation into claims of…

How To Use Video Content To Generate, Qualify And Score Leads

As much as we’d like to create videos just to entertain people and make them laugh, at some point, your boss is going to ask what your videos are doing to help the company. You do work in the marketing department, after all, and your sales team has an insatiable appetite for leads.Fortunately, you shouldn’t have to search too hard for an answer because video offers amazing opportunities to engage audiences and generate new and better leads. The data you can collect about how each individual person watches your videos will help you prioritize your follow-up.For example, you will know that “Jill Smith” watched your entire product explanation video and then went on to watch a two-minute “how-to” video. Meanwhile, “Bill Jones” only watched 10 seconds of an explainer video and turned it off. Which one are you going to recommend the sales team call first? (Hint: That’s not a trick question.)Obviously, Jill is going to be more interested in taking a call from a sales rep than Bill is. That d…

OnePlus One Coming Soon to Flipkart, will end Amazon Exclusivity

When it first entered the Indian market, OnePlus made its One smartphone available exclusively on Amazon. But since then, OnePlus has finally ditched its annoying invite-based system, which shows that the company has improved its supply chain. And as we’re getting closer to the release of the next-generation OnePlus 2, it seems that the company is more and more interested in getting as many sales as possible from the current one. Obviously, once the next-gen gets released, that’s what consumers will be most interested in. OnePlus will perhaps even further discount the OnePlus One, but the biggest share of sales should be coming from the OnePlus 2.According to a recent teaser shared by Flipkart on Twitter, it seems that the OnePlus One could soon be coming to the Indian retailer. The company tweeted the following, along with the above image:The #One Wish Flipkart hasn’t fulfilled yet… is about to come true soon. The hint is pretty obvious, and once OnePlus One becomes available, it will …

Rubicon Project Says Mobile Now More Than 20% Of Programmatic Ad Spend

Ad tech giant Rubicon Project says mobile ad spend on its platform increased more than 1,300 percent in the two years between Q1 2013 and Q1 2015. Mobile now makes up more than 20 percent of the spend on the programmatic ad buying and selling platform, up from just 3 percent two years ago.The public company says it expects mobile managed revenues will surpass $200 million this fiscal year. While the escalation is a sign that advertisers are embracing mobile, it’s more significantly a sign that Rubicon’s investment in mobile programmatic technology is paying off.“Two years ago we recognized a significant opportunity existed on the mobile distribution channel for Rubicon Project,” said Joe Prusz, Head of Mobile, Rubicon Project. “The infrastructure necessary to enable mobile ads to be bought and sold automatically – the same way they are on desktop – simply did not exist. Over the last two years, we have been tackling that complicated endeavor with a clear mission to scale the mobile ma…

How to Use Google’s Services and Not Become a Product

Since 1995, when Larry Page met Sergey Brin and came up with the idea of a website like it, it’s been quite a while. Google is without doubt one of the most popular search engines out there, but it’s much more than just a place to look for stuff. While students may be using it to get their homework done, writers are looking at it for inspiration and geeks are amazed by the latest gadgets it comes up with, the staff at Google is working on some brand new ideas. You surely heard of Google AdWords that was launched at the end of 2000 with only 350 customers. This is now the biggest and most reliable helping hand for marketers and business people who want to know how well they perform. Apart from Google Web, Maps and Images, there is also such a thing as Google Print – or books – since 2003.Many of you probably use Picasa for editing your pictures, since it’s much easier than Photoshop, but still good enough to be worth your while. You also probably love listening to music and watching mov…

Connecting The Dots With Device Targeting

We have reached a true cross-screen state.A recent comScore report revealed that in the past four years alone, time spent by platform is up dramatically in the US. Americans are spending 394% more time on their smartphones and 1,721% more time on their tablets; and this mobile activity isn’t even stealing time from the desktop — people are spending 37% more time on their computers than they did at the end of 2010.As consumer actions and devices multiply, marketers are called upon to connect the dots — more dots than ever before. We’re in a steady state of multi-tasking and multi-device living, and there’s no turning back.A typical day for consumers has them using their computers or laptops at work, relying on their smartphones while out and about, and playing on their tablets while watching TV (connected or otherwise) and executing various digital tasks at home. The good news is, this new paradigm produces an array of new data signals that marketers can use. But the question remains as…

Marketers Don’t Need To Choose Between Efficiency And Premium

In 2014, we saw greater emphasis placed on automation and data-driven ad buying than ever before. Spend on audience targeting solutions is expected to grow to nearly $17 billion by 2017, which will equal 83 percent of the total U.S. digital display spend, according to Magna Global.Audience buys are an important piece of any marketing strategy — with so much content and noise, marketers want to effectively reach the people who are most likely to respond to their ads. Doing so creates a better ad experience for the consumer by delivering more relevant content. With all the buzz around audience targeting, many marketers may wonder, should I give up my premium buys for audience buys? The short answer is, no.The longer and more important answer is that marketers don’t need to choose between efficiency and premium inventory. Combining the massive scale of audience targeting with the deep user engagement of an ad in a premium environment will maximize their ad spend. Think of it as the “halo …

Google Photos – The Good Parts

When Google launched Gmail in 2004, it bundled 40x more free storage space than competing web mail services. It seemed to solve all storage woes and there was not even a “delete” button in Gmail because, with a gigabyte available, why would anyone ever delete their emails. They’ve adopted a similar approach with Google Photos but gone a step further.Google Photos offers unlimited online storage space for your digital photos and videos. The original images are compressed after uploading but the difference is barely noticeable, at least on the computer screen.I started dumping all my pictures to Google Photos, the day it launched, and couldn’t be happier. The initial purpose was online backup but now Google Photos has become “the” place where I go to explore my photos. The files do not consume a byte of local storage space and yet the entire collection is always available on every device that I own. Here are essential things that you should know about Google Photos and some tips to help …

France Wants Google To Target French Citizens Worldwide & Censor Their Search Results

The clock is ticking for Google to comply with a demand by the French privacy regulator CNIL to implement Right To Be Forgotten censorship on sites beyond Google France. Providing that solution will be tough, since CNIL has told Search Engine Land that censorship needs to somehow be done for any French citizen, no matter where in the world they are.Last Friday, CNIL gave Google 15 days to implement Right To Be Forgotten removals globally, so we’re at the halfway mark. As I explained in my How The Myth Of Google Censorship Was Busted By The EU & Canada analysis story, Google has two options to do this:Easy Solution: French & EU CensorshipCurrently, Google only implements Right To Be Forgotten censorship on versions of its search engine for particular countries, such as Google France or Google UK. If someone goes to Google.com or a non-EU version of Google (such as Google Canada), even if they are within France and the EU, they will get uncensored results.Google could make it so…

Facebook Test Gives People More Control Over What Appears In News Feed

Facebook continues to experiment with adding more of a human touch to the News Feed. The company is testing a feature that enables people to make sure posts from certain people and Pages show up at the top of their News Feeds. Spotted today by Josh Constine of TechCrunch, the “See First” test is similar to another that surfaced last month. Each gives people more control over what appears in the News Feed, levers that Facebook has traditionally left to its algorithm to push and pull. Facebook does give people the chance to unfollow people and unlike Pages and indicate that “I don’t want to see this” to indicate the type of posts they want to see less of. And there are settings to allow for notifications from favorite people and Pages, but the experiments go further in giving News Feed power to the people. It’s not an academic matter for marketers, who are constantly trying to figure out ways to get their messages into people’s Facebook feeds. However, it’s not clear that “See First” or an…

Nokia To Return to Smartphone Market in 2016, Reveals CEO Rajeev Suri

Nokia is prepping to return to the smartphone game. The Finnish technology company — the part of it that wasn’t sold to Microsoft in a multimillion dollar deal which completed last year, will be partnering with third parties and provide them with the design of the phone, which they will then manufacture and sell, CEO Rajeev Suri said today.Ever since Microsoft bought Nokia’s services and devices divisions, there has been a number of talk points where it was believed that the Finnish giant will reboot its effort in smartphone manufacturing business. But until now Nokia kept denying any such possibility, and also it was contractually obligated from manufacturing or using its brand name on any phone until the end of 2016.But then Nokia partnered with Foxconn last year to sell a tablet called the N1, which runs Android, giving slightest of indication of its return to the game. Incidentally. Nokia’s current statement comes two months after technology outlet Re/Code reported the same — whic…

Survey: 43% Of U.S. Readers Have Felt Disappointed Or Deceived By Native Ads

With traditional banner and display advertising on the ropes online, many publishers are turning to native ads, brand messages designed to blend seamlessly with a site’s editorial content.Native advertising is more lucrative and gets around ad blocking software that many people have on their browsers. The danger is that sometimes the native camouflage is too effective, leaving readers upset that they have been fooled. And that’s happening often according new research by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. More than four of 10 readers (43%) of news sites in the United States have felt disappointed or deceived after reading native ad content that they later discovered was sponsored. At 33%, people in the United Kingdom were less upset by native ads, a sentiment the study’s authors believe might be attributed to the fact that the practice is less common in the UK.The negative sentiment has mitigating factors, however. The study, which polled more than 2,000 people in each of…
