Microsoft Officially Launches Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for Android Phones

Back in November, last year, Microsoft launched Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for iPhone and iPad users and made mobile editing free for Android tablet owners, as well. In the beginning of this year, Android tablets have received the full versions of Microsoft’s Office suite and now the company launched the official apps for Android phone owners, as well.Microsoft’s Office apps have been available for Android phones in preview form, but now Microsoft is launching the final versions on the Google Play Store. Go ahead and download Word, Excel and PowerPoint on your Android phone to enjoy all the features that they bring. During the preview, Microsoft says they were able to test the apps on over 1,900 different Android phone models in 83 countries, which probably helped release the final versions so soon. The single drawback with the new apps is that they will run on a device which has at least 1GB of RAM and which is fueled by at least Android 4.4 KitKat. There are actually quite many out …

Facebook Partners with Kaspersky to Launch a new Malware Removal Tool

Facebook is the world’s largest online social network, which makes it a very attractive target for hackers and other malevolent parties. We’ve talked about quite a few Facebook scams here on Technology Personalized, so by now you probably know that these are quite serious, as there is a big risk of getting your computer infected with malware if you fall prey. There are plenty of security engineers working at Facebook to ensure that its users are being protected and the company is also partnering with Kaspersky Lab to fight against malicious software. Thus, from now on, if it detects that an account is behaving suspiciously and appears to be infected, Facebook will recommend a free anti-malware scan, a technology provided by the Russian security company.Facebook is also a major target for phishers, with Kaspersky saying that 1 in 5 phishing scams target Facebook notifications. Trevor Pottinger, a Facebook security engineer, said the following:

Report: 87% of Facebook Customer Messages Are Ignored

Sure, Facebook is fertile ground for customer inquiries, but a new survey shows that most companies aren’t providing a suitable customer experience. Locowise, a social media analytics and reporting service, studied more than 900 Facebook pages and found that customer service on Facebook is less than adequate. One of the most disturbing findings was that 87% of all messages going unanswered completely. It wasn’t just stagnant pages either. Of those pages that did respond, they did so selectively – answering only 37% of all posts. The publishing ability is a setting that can be enabled within the Publishing Ability section of the settings page. Of those pages that specifically enabled the publishing ability 65% didn’t respond to any customer posts. One of the good findings was that when a question was answered, it was done so quickly. Facebook has begun to reward admins with fast responses with badges to hopefully spur fast responses. Of all the pages in the study that responded, 33% of …

5 Reasons Why Display Advertising Will Never Die

“Display is dead,” glibly chirped the very senior agency executive at a recent meeting of six dozen impressively pedigreed brand marketers and agency leaders. I was a guest at the confab — and this was a good thing; if it were my meeting, I would have verbally boxed this digital “guru” in the ears. You see, I have reached my wits’ end. I am sick and tired of folks who profess to be digital experts declaring the death of display advertising — in the face of overwhelming evidence that proves just the opposite. Not only are they wrong, but their facile decrees slow the industry’s progress toward delivering on the digital advertising promise of transfixing consumers and transforming brands. There are two reasons why intelligent individuals might take this point of view, neither of them flattering: ignorance or disingenuousness.Looking first at the latter, what I call disingenuousness, others call good marketing, for it is practiced by a plethora of VC-backed, attention-starved digital advert…

Direct Response Video Advertising: Best Practices For Social Media

Regardless of medium, choosing the optimum creative has always been one of the main considerations for advertisers crafting a campaign strategy. For social media marketers, creative selection is influenced by granular audience segmentation and “shareability,” as well as traditional concerns like target audience and desired effect.Nowhere is this a more complex decision-making process than in the case of video, which has a great deal more variables to consider than image-based advertising (e.g. music, length, editing) but also a good deal of evidence validating its effectiveness. It’s this efficacy that is drawing more advertisers to video, and notable new developments in the space have helped codify best practices to the benefit of advertisers still determining whether to invest in the medium.Examining these improvements, along with how some of Nanigans’ (my employer) most successful customers are using the format, should provide advertisers with some valuable insights in terms of campa…

Gmail’s Very Useful ‘Undo Send’ Feature is Finally Out of Beta; Here’s How to Use it.

Google is notorious for tagging a product as a beta for way longer than necessary. Gmail launched on 1st April in 2004 but it enjoyed the beta status all the way till July 2009. By then, Gmail was already one of the most popular email services around. Now, a small yet essential feature has broken that record. After being in beta for around 6 years (it was added in 2009, about the same time Gmail came out of beta), Google is now confident enough to bring the Undo Send feature out of beta.Yes, you can now have a 5-30 seconds window to reliably stop an email from being sent out. If only I knew about this feature when I was in high school. It could have saved me some embarrassment. But then again, a 16-year-old isn’t exactly capable of doing deep self-evaluation in mere 30 seconds. So this is how it works. Instead of being stowed away in the experimental Labs section, the Undo Send feature now lives proudly in the second-half of the General section in Settings. To get there, click the Gear

Samsung is Disabling Windows Update on its Laptops, Possibly Leaving Users Vulnerable

Samsung is forcefully disabling Windows update on many of its laptops. The South Korean technology conglomerate ships its laptops with a suite called SW Update which comes with an application whose sole job is to prevent Microsoft from seeding out updates to Samsung laptops. As Microsoft MVP Patrick Barker writes in a blog post, Samsung’s SW Update suite automatically downloads an application called “Disable_Windowsupdate.exe” to prevent its systems from snagging any updates released by Microsoft.“You can install relevant software for your computer easier and faster using SW Update. The SW Update program helps you install and update your software and driver easily,” how Samsung describes the SW Update tool. The suite in question works on computers running Windows XP and higher. It’s not clear how many Samsung laptops have exactly downloaded and executed “Disable_Windowsupdate.exe” application.Just the idea of blocking Windows Update is absurd. In the past, we’ve seen numerous of times w…
