Google Tightens Its Belt As Company Growth Slows

Long known for its lavish benefits and liberal hiring, Google is tightening its belt as it matures and revenue growth slows. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) is reporting that the company is “curbing hiring and seeking ways to run its sprawling empire more efficiently.”Institutional investors have frequently expressed concern about hiring and costs at the company. Now incoming CFO Ruth Porat is reportedly leading an expansive internal initiative looking at costs, revenue and accounting issues. Porat will make her first “public” appearance as CFO on Google’s earnings call Thursday afternoon.Specifically, the WSJ reports that hiring has slowed and internally now must be justified in terms of strategic business objectives including new revenues. Google has a total of just over 55,000 employees globally. The most interesting part of the WSJ article concerns the corporate model that Google may be seeking to emulate — Berkshire Hathaway:Mr. Page said he looks to Berkshire Hathaway Inc., the ins…

TapDeck for Android Makes Discovering New Wallpapers as Easy as Tapping the Homescreen

I’m not the biggest wallpaper fanatic. My Mac’s wallpaper is the default one. It’s the same story on my Android phone. The last really good wallpaper app I tried on my phone was Chrooma. It generated cool Material Design wallpapers every 5 minutes. A while later I changed my custom ROM and stayed with the stock Lollipop wallpaper.I’ve been testing TapDeck, a wallpaper discovery app for the past couple of days and the app tells me I’ve changed my wallpaper over 30 times. And I’ve “liked” 5 of the wallpapers. I’ll be coming back to them soon. So it turns out, It’s not me, it’s the wallpapers. Or specifically, the process of discovering, saving and applying wallpapers is too much of a hassle for me to actively seek them out. And I’m sure I’m not alone here.Ok so let’s talk about TapDeck. I tried TapDeck first a few months back when it was in beta. The app’s premise is simple, you double-tap on the homescreen to change the wallpaper and swipe up to view contextual information about the wa…

During the course of the next year, you should give serious attention to making the following marketing shifts. Doing so could save your business from decline or boost you to a new level of power and success.1. Fire Your SEO AgencySearch Engine Optimization (SEO) is not dead, despite what some pundits may proclaim. SEO is changing. It is critical that every marketer be aware of what the SEO changes are and…

Swivel Allows you to Set a Custom Screen Rotation for Each App on your Android Device

Swivel for Android comes with a very simple solution for a common annoyance – it allows you to set a custom screen orientation or rotation for each app on your Android smartphone or tablet. With a size of slightly more than 1 megabyte, the app is available for $0.99 on the Play Store for anybody who is running at least Android 4.0.Described as a ‘handy and lightweight utility,’ Swivel allows users to easily set any app’s orientation. So, if you too are annoyed with how some apps handle orientation control, forcing you to toggle the rotation lock in the settings panel, then you could be interested in this app. After installing it, you just need to scroll through your list of apps, then set the screen orientation you prefer for that app, and press Start to enable accessibility access for Swivel. Thus, Swivel will forcen any app you open to follow the orientation that you have set. The developer says that the app consumes very few resources on your device as it’s running in the backgroun…

Gigya Survey: 88% Of U.S. Consumers Say They Have Used Social Logins

What them worry?Despite ongoing concerns about companies’ use of their online data, U.S. consumers are increasingly using social media credentials to sign into websites and apps, according to a report released today by Gigya.Gigya found that 88% of 2,000 consumers surveyed by OnePoll in April said they have used social logins to connect with sites and apps. That’s 11 percentage points more than the results from a similar Gigya survey last year and a 35 percentage-point increase from the 53% of people who said the were social login users in 2012.Gigya, a Mountain View-based digital consumer management firm, is one of the leading providers of the social sign-in plugins in question, so it’s not a disinterested observer. Even so, the trends over time provide an interesting benchmark of consumer attitudes about sharing social data. And convenience continues to be the primary driver of adoption. Fifty-six percent of those surveyed said they used social authentication to avoid having to fill …

Xiaomi is Said to Upgrade the Mi 4i with a Hexa-core Snapdragon 808 Processor

A fresh report coming from Chinese website MyDrivers.com claims that the Xiaomi Mi 4i will soon be upgraded with a better processor. Regarded as a cheaper version of the Mi 4 with slightly dumbed-down specs, the smartphone is equipped with a octa core Snapdragon 615, which could be upgraded to a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor. The smartphone has been having some overheating issues and back in May a software update was made available in order to fix the issues. But now it seems that Xiaomi wants to upgrade the main kernel, as well, just to be sure that it gets rid of these annoying problems.Snapdragon 810 wouldn’t have been a viable option, since manufacturers have opted for the Snapdragon 808 as the 810 is believed to have thermal issues, as well. However, it’s important to point that Qualcomm is already working on a new version of the Snapdragon 810 chipset which is going to be used in the OnePlus 2, the Mi 5 and others.

The updated Xiaomi Mi 4i is believed to have the same 5 inch …

Unruly Extends A View To 30 Seconds With New Video Ad Pricing Model

Social video advertising platform Unruly announced a new pricing model that brings it in line with YouTube and goes well beyond Facebook’s pricing standard for viewability. The new cost-per-completed-view (CPCV) pricing model allows marketers to pay for a view only after a video has been watched for 30 seconds.“The market is currently flooded with a number of different measurement options, and it can be difficult for marketers to determine which makes the most sense for them. One thing is clear — we need to move beyond the view when measuring the success of video ad campaigns. With a cost-per-completed-view model, advertisers can be sure their videos are actually played through to 30 seconds. It’s the easiest way for advertisers to know they are only being charged for high quality, highly-engaged views,” said Unruly CEO Scott Button. The Media Rating Council has set the standard for video viewability as fifty percent of an ad’s pixels being in-view for at least two seconds. However ther…

Umi Hammer Gets Listed on Flipkart With a 13-Megapixel Camera for Rs. 10,999

Not many have heard about the Chinese company UMI, but it is actually claiming to have built the “strongest phone,” which is going to make many raise some eyebrows. The company has silently launched its new Umi Hammer smartphone for Indian customers through third-party online retailer Flipkart. The smartphone is available to buy for a price of Rs. 10,999 but it is currently marked as being out of stock. Up until this moment, there has been no official announcement from the company regarding its smartphone, and this is somewhat surprising, since it claims to be the ‘world’s strongest phone ever built.’ The video from below goes through some of the features that show why this is a very resistant device. We see the smartphone being ran over by a car, splashed with water and being used to drive a nail, among others. The phone is built from an aviation alloy frame with a thickness of 4.3mm and its rear panel comes with a soft-textured polycarbonate material.  The Umi Hammer is a dual-SIM dev…

5 Secrets To Getting Subscribers To Forward Your Emails

Social sharing gets a lot of attention — in large part, because it’s relatively easy to measure — but the all but invisible email forward can be just as powerful for brands. Whereas social sharing is public, diffuse, and powerful at driving top-of-the-funnel awareness, email forwards are private, targeted, and excel at driving bottom-of-the-funnel action. To better understand email forwarding behavior, Litmus (my employer) used its Email Analytics tool to measure the forwarding activity from more than 400,000 email campaigns. We then analyzed more than 200 campaigns from the most forwarded 1% of emails and compared them with an equal number of campaigns from the middle-of-the-pack median, looking at differences in tactics and email topics. The findings, detailed in The Viral Email report, sometimes reinforced common sense but other times revealed counterintuitive approaches. Here are five key tactics for spurring email forwards, including two not included in the report.1. The Smaller Th…

Bring Gmail’s Archiving Feature to Microsoft Outlook for Mac (without scripting)

The Archive feature in Gmail comes handy when you would like to preserve an email conversation forever but at the same time move it out of your main inbox. While a thread is selected in Gmail, you can press the Archive button, or hit the “e” keyboard shortcut, and the selected thread is removed from your inbox but continues to exists in the “All Mails” folder.Microsoft has just launched a new version of Outlook with Office 2016 for Mac but there’s no built-in option to help you easily archive messages similar to what you have in Gmail. You can obviously move email messages to the Archive folder through the Message > Move > Choose Folder.. menu but that is no match to the simplistic option available in Gmail. Press ‘e’ and you’re done.Add Gmail-like Archiving to OutlookHere’s a step-by-step guide that will help you emulate Gmail’s archiving functionality in your Microsoft Outlook. The tutorial is for Office 2016 but it should work with previous versions of Outlook on Mac OS X as …
