Lava Sends Out Press Invites for the Launch of its first Android One Phone on July 27

In the beginning of this year, we were wondering what happened to Google’s Android One initiative, but we’ve seen recently some activity from the company in that direction. After it first launched in India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Turkey, and Philippines, Google has expanded Android One to Pakistan, as well, with the new QMobile A1 smartphone. And now it seems that Google wants to strengthen Android One’s presence on the Indian market, as Indian phone-maker Lava is said to release its first Android One smartphone. It was initially believed that the device would launch on July 14, but now it’s almost sure that the new handset will be launched on July 27, next week, according to press invites sent out by the company. As you can see for yourself from the above invite, it’s pretty obvious that Lava is going to launch an Android One handset. The invite reads ‘Witness the Power of 1,” where ‘1’ is made up of what could be its upcoming features – the one that will never grow old, will …

Twitter Makes Its Case To Be A Major Video Player At VidCon

Twitter’s head of TV and video Baljeet Singh talks with AdAge’s Tim Peterson at VidCon in Anaheim. Until recently video on Twitter was an afterthought. Even the person responsible for the company’s video efforts, Baljeet Singh, admits as much. But that has changed in the last six months, as Twitter has picked up the pace with a succession of new video features and acquisitions, including the introduction of consumer video uploading, the purchase of video analytics provider/influencer broker Niche, the launch of live streaming app Periscope and the rollout of auto-play video.“We’ve just seen this massive transformation,” Singh said, “to the point that it’s less and less common that you ask someone about video on Twitter and they say, ‘Oh, you mean Vine.’”Not that there’s anything wrong with Vine, the popular six-second video network that Twitter bought in 2012. But Vine is still a niche channel, one that doesn’t offer advertising, and Twitter aims to become a major player in the video di…

Why Most Content Is “Meh” And How To Fix It

Content marketing continues to be one of the most hyped — and most misunderstood — elements of digital marketing. Many imagine that it will be a cure-all for a whole host of marketing, sales and branding issues in an organization. In reality, your content marketing will likely mirror or amplify any organizational issues. As a result, content programs often don’t meet goals and lose momentum. Most companies feel obligated to do content marketing and allow their programs to stumble along, which consumes a great deal of time and energy but yields a comparably small reward. Ultimately, problems in content marketing are just a symptom of a larger problem in general marketing: lack of focus on the right audiences.Today, many companies are beginning to remedy that marketing problem by implementing Account-Based Marketing across the entire lifecycle. Since content is always in the spotlight, it’s essential to begin building an account-based philosophy into your content strategy. Once you do th…

Even The Biggest Brands Can Get Hyperlocal With Geolocation Targeting

On average, we gaze at our smartphones around 220 times a day and pick up our devices a whopping 1,500 times a week. With some 2.1 billion smartphones now in use, it’s only natural that marketers would try to appeal to mobile-attentive consumers with personalized geolocation targeting and content localization.Marketers initially used geolocation targeting primarily by asking consumers to “check in” at locations in exchange for special offers. In due time, entire businesses — think Uber and Tinder — sprang up around this technology, but there were a few stumbling blocks.Nordstrom customers were famously creeped out in 2013 upon learning that its in-store Wi-Fi geolocation tracking service was analyzing their whereabouts for insights. And the city of London had to order UK startup Renew to stop tracking its citizens with high-tech trash cans. From these and other examples, marketers have learned to always announce their presence, keep it simple, and provide an easy opt-out option. All Ey…

Google Suspends Several Apps After Release Of In-App Fraud Report

Ad Age is reporting that Google has pulled several apps from the Play Store after the release of a report on in-app ad fraud on Thursday. The report highlighted the migration of the ongoing battle in display advertising to the apps ecosystem. Published by ad monitoring firm Forensiq, the study described several ways the company observed malicious apps defrauding advertisers and draining users’ smartphone data plans and batteries. Chief among the tactics seen was apps that run constantly in the background endlessly serving ads in high volume throughout the day. Forensiq estimated the annual loss to advertisers as the result of malicious apps could approach $1 billion globally this year.Ad Age says it tried to contact the makers of two apps that have been suspended — Celebrity Baby and Vampire Doctor — but that the email addresses listed in the Play store were invalid. A Google spokesperson confirmed the removal of several apps, but did not comment on the Forensiq report or provide addit…

Google Maps for Android Now Lets You Add Custom Names for Places

While it’s still no Map Maker and it’s only limited to Android, Google is starting to let users customize their maps in small ways. Yup, we’re all hobbyist cartographers now. This feature comes n the same update that added the timeline view for your entire Location History that Google so generously collects thanks to the always-on GPS in Android (you can turn off the tracking though). Timeline view is Google’s way of mocking you for not leaving the house from Monday to Thursday (or maybe that’s just for me).If you’re not yet running version 9.12, wait for it to be rolled out around the world or grab the APK and update manually.I live in a dry state. Soda is literally the best thing we have. Yeah, it’s sad. Custom names for places is an upgraded version of Stars (which is still around). You can give any location on the map, a name (which, of course, is private). Even an unknown location that doesn’t have a name in Google Maps. You can then easily search for this place in the Maps app. B…

Moto G 2015 Leaked Video Confirms 5-inch HD Display and Water Resistance

We knew that something big is brewing in the Motorola stable and all the fingers pointed at the Moto G 2015 and the Moto X 2015. Motorola has already sent an invite for its event on July 28 but it dropped very subtle clues about the phones itself. The newly surfaced promotional video not only shows off the Moto G 2015 but also gives away all its secrets leaving nearly nothing for imagination.Recently a vendor had leaked the photos of the Moto G 2015 and the fact that the promotional video sports the same device in it adds an extra bit of credibility. Moto G 2015 is rumored to be powered by the Snapdragon 410 SoC and in all likelihood the phone might come in a 1GB RAM/8GB storage variant and a 2GB/16GB storage version. The video starts off with a line “We present the New” and shows a couple of slides along with explaining the features of the phone. Moto G 2015 will be featuring a 5-inch FHD display and this time around it also comes with IPX7 certification, which in simple term tells us…

Global Mobile Internet Usage Overtakes Desktop for the First Time [Report]

Silicon Valley based venture capital firm, KPCB has published an interesting report called “The Internet Report” which depicts the Internet Trends in 2015. The first report was published way back in 1995, a time when the total number of Internet users stood at a meagre 35 million as opposed to 2.8 billion in 2015. “The Internet Report” throws light on some of the interesting aspects of Digital media consumption including the Time Spent per Adult user per day with the digital media. The report has revealed some startling changes including the fact that 51% of the total time spent on the Internet is on mobile devices as opposed to the 42% of time on desktop. This is the first instance wherein the time spent consuming digital content on mobile devices has surpassed the time spent on desktops or laptops. Time spent on mobile Internet usage has grown three folds from less than an hour in 2008 to nearly three hours in 2015.Smartphone users exhibit a greater degree of engagement as they carry…

Apple iPhone at a Wedding, Micromax Sliver in a Prison: A Tale of Two Phone Ads!

Imagine a high-profile smartphone advertisement with no reference whatsoever to the phone’s display, processor, RAM or any other service or app on it? Sounds suicidal? Well, two very high profile phones have walked the no-spec way in the past week or so. And in very different ways.On the one hand, you had the iPhone 6 (with its distributor Ingram Micro) from Leo Burnett India, whose TV commercial, which revolved around a traditional Indian wedding, in which the groom and bride correspond with each other using an iPhone 6 as they come closer to the moment of their wedded union. On the other, you had the Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 TV ad by Lowe Lintas and Partners, which showed Hugh Jackman breaking out of prison in a foreign locale, with just a little help from a super thin and rather tough phone – the Canvas Sliver 5.Cue the contradictions:We had a phone from the US highlighting an Indian tradition, we had an Indian phone whose ad had very little Indian about it.We had a US phone ad with…

DriveFlo is a Nifty App to Help You Track and Monitor Your Driving Skills

Driving doesn’t have to be boring, annoying or stressful, with the right tools you can transform it into a pleasant experience. I am a big fan of the reward system that Waze has come up with, and it just adds new meanings to what can otherwise be perceived as a necessary activity. Of course, there are various other apps which can make your driving safer or some that can tell you more regarding the state of your car. DriveFlo is another app that you can add to your collection if you want technology to help you in becoming a better driver. Somewhat similar to Waze, the app comes with a point system that challenges you to beat your top score every time you’re on the road. The app also comes with real-time audio and visual feedback, which gives you the feeling that there’s an assistant helping you out. DriveFlo automatically records all your trip data, including scores, distances, travel times, and routes, letting you revisit your best and worst journeys any time. When we tested the app, we…
