Why Google Sent You That Message About Blocking JavaScript & CSS

Did you get an email from Google saying Googlebot can’t access your CSS and JS files? Well, you are not alone. This morning, Google began sending mass messages to verified Google Search Console webmasters notifying them if GoogleBot, their search crawler, cannot access their JavaScript and/or CSS files. It seems that many WordPress users, including other popular CMS solutions like Joomla and others, have received such notifications. Simply because the default for these CMS solutions is to block the include folder, which has CSS and JavaScript within in.Google is notifying these webmasters because almost a year ago, Google began rendering the full page as a user would see it. In October they changed their webmaster guidelines to inform webmasters to not block include files. The rational, if Google cannot full see your web site, it may result in Google not fully understanding your web site, leading to “suboptimal rankings,” as Google put it.Here is a picture of the notification that may lo…

Statistically Speaking , You’re Not Going to Read This Article, But I’ll Make You

So you wrote a blog post.In fact, you think you wrote a pretty fantastic blog post — a post that required putting in extra research time after dinner or early in the morning before breakfast. You dug up some stats, created an infographic, and put in so much work that you lit a cigar, sat back with your hands behind your head and proclaimed:“It will be my greatest masterpiece!”You excitedly posted it to your blog or your company’s blog, shared it on any website that would take it (like an indie band handing out demo tapes on the street corner), and waited for the world to discover your genius. And you waited. The response? Tepid.Even worse, the blog comments and social shares held fast at zero-point-zero.The digital tumbleweed started to blow across your blog’s landscape.Speaking of landscapes, people are getting trampled by an increasingly crowded content marketing landscape — a landscape so saturated with blogs, tweets, posts and videos that just creating content is only half the battle…

Evernote Drops Email-to-Note for Free Accounts, Alternative

Your Evernote account has a unique and secret email address. Any email messages forwarded to this address are automatically saved as notes in your Evernote notebook. The feature has been around for a while and is particularly handy for quickly archiving email messages and included file attachments into Evernote that can be retrieved later from any device. Earlier this month, Evernote made a little change. The Email to Evernote feature still exists but only if you have a premium account. From the support page:After July 15, 2015, you can continue saving up to five more emails into Evernote. After you send your fifth email, you won’t be able to save any additional emails into Evernote until you’ve upgraded to Evernote Plus or Premium. In the meantime, Evernote has introduced a new Email Clipper for sending your Gmail messages to Evernote but it only works inside desktop browsers. How do you send email messages to Evernote from a mobile device?A good alternative is IFTTT. Assuming that you…

Nearly Every Google AdSense Publisher Must Comply With EU Cookie Consent, Not Just Those Based In The EU

Google has notified AdSense publishers that they must get “cookie consent” from site visitors from countries within the European Union to use their data. The change essentially affects any publisher running AdSense, not just those operating in or serving the European Union.Google says the new user consent policy is in reaction to requests by European Union data protection authorities. “It has always been Google’s policy to comply with privacy laws, so we’ve agreed to make certain changes affecting our own products and partners using Google products,” Jason Woloz, Security & Privacy Program Manager for Display and Video Ads at Google, wrote in a blog post announcing the change.“If your websites are getting visitors from any of the countries in the European Union, you must comply with the EU user consent policy. We recommend you start working on a policy-compliant user consent mechanism today. “Any publishers getting traffic from EU countries — again, potentially any website based a…

New Moto X Play Brings a Massive Battery in a 5.5-inch Body for a Good Price

Motorola has outed today the third-gen Moto G and Moto X Style today and it also unveiled the new Moto X Play handset to complete its trio launch. The Lenovo-owned company has placed the new Moto G as its most affordable device and the Moto X Style as its flagship, so it made sense for the new Moto X Play to be in the middle. The standout feature of the device is its massive 3,630mAh battery which is most likely meant to solve annoying battery problems consumers have been complaining about in the original and 2nd-gen Moto X. Motorola says this battery will bring a full 48 hours of mixed use, and the quick-charging technology should provide 8 hours of juice in just 15 minutes. But the smartphone also comes with a 21-megapixel rear camera (paired with a 5 megapixel front one), which could be another feature that will make consumers interested or at least curious in this device. This is actually the same camera that the company has used in the Moto X style. The smartphone has a 5.5-inch 108…

A Simple Model To Determine When To Go Agency And When To Go In-House

I’m the CEO of an online marketing agency, and I’m here to tell you that there are a lot of marketing functions you shouldn’t outsource to an agency.Surprised? Don’t worry — there’s still plenty of work for agencies to do.But making smart choices about when to outsource ends up being a huge benefit for both agencies and clients. This article suggests a simple framework for companies to use to help them make these decisions.First Things First: There’s More Than Enough Work For EveryoneI know there are marketing teams out there that fundamentally believe that nothing should be outsourced to an agency. I’ve talked to many such people, and the arguments against agencies generally come down to a few common themes:We can do it better than an agency. We care more about our company than an agency (resulting in better performance). We don’t want anyone to learn the recipe for our secret sauce.Agencies just add complication. All of these are legitimate concerns, but here’s the problem: Few — if an…

There’s also a 5-megapixel front-facing camera on the front. The phone comes with a 3,000maAh battery and is available in the following storage options – 16…

Developing A Data Road Map: How To Implement A First-Party Data Blueprint

Marketing is an increasingly data-driven discipline. Brands have an abundance of data from their customer interactions via the Web, mobile, email, in stores, advertising and more. And notably, research shows that marketers reporting the most success are doing the best job of harnessing and using this customer data — their own first-party data — to drive analytics, personalization, targeting, audience segmentation and the customer experience. In my last column, I outlined three steps to help marketers start with the basics in building a successful first-party data strategy: conducting a data audit, defining objectives for meeting business goals, and identifying the data points necessary to meet those goals. For many brands, the ultimate objective is creating a centralized foundation that allows them to connect fragmented customer data, resolve cross-channel identity, and take a more holistic marketing approach.Once marketers are aware of the current data landscape at their fingertips, w…

Embedded Tweets can be Easily Faked

You can easily embed tweets in your website by adding a little HTML snippet to your site’s template. The embedded tweets are interactive in the sense that they’ve a follow button, they show live retweet counts, and you also use CSS to change the formatting of tweets. Now CSS does help you control the tweet’s appearance but you may be surprised to know that it is also possible to change the other elements of an embedded tweet. For instance, you may modify the actual text of the tweet. The favorite & retweet counts can be altered as well. Let me illustrate that with an example:This is the original tweet:
Receive files in your Google Drive from anyone http://t.co/5NyaM0NRiKhttp://pic.twitter.com/w6RTdkWhSe — Amit Agarwal (@labnol) April 23, 2014This is the same tweet, but altered with JavaScript:
Notice any difference? Well, there are quite a few.The altered tweet uses a different font family, there’s minimal Twitter branding, the favorite & retweet numbers are made up, some extra w…

Forecast: Instagram Will Pass Google, Twitter In Mobile Display Ad Revenue By 2017

Instagram’s advertising efforts appear to be paying off in a big way.How big? Big enough to pass Twitter and Google in mobile ad revenue in the next two years. That’s according to a new forecast by industry analyst eMarketer. EMarketer predicts that the Faceboook-owned visual social network will bring in $595 million in global ad revenue this year. And by 2017, Instagram ad revenue will jump to $2.81 billion. That would be more 10.6% of Facebook’s total 2017 ad revenue, according to eMarketer projections. It would also surpass the net mobile revenue total for both Google and Twitter:If the forecasts come true — or even approach the mark — it would be a significant windfall for Facebook. The company has been been very patient about monetizing Instagram, focusing first on brand awareness ads for large companies during 1 1/2 years of testing. In June, Instagram announced that it will start selling ads — including direct response ads with links to “Shop Now,” “Install Now,” “Learn More” or “…

Motorola Moto G 3rd Gen Launched with 5-inch FHD, 2GB RAM, 13MP Camera and the Same Snapdragon 410

The hoopla around the upcoming Motorola devices seems to have finally settled after the company launched its iterative upgrade in G series, the Moto G 3rd gen at Rs 11,999 (~$185) for the 1GB RAM/8GB Storage and Rs 12,999 (~$203) for the 2GB RAM/16GB storage. Last couple of weeks have been full of Motorola leaks and rumors, and couple of days before we also saw a Moto G 2015 promotional video that left very little for imagination.Disrupting the market with affordable produce has been Motorolas forte, but all that seemed to have gone a bit offtrack (at least in India) with the launch of ultra affordable phones like Xiaomi Redmi 2 and Lenovo K3 Note which boasted of better specifications than the Moto E and the Moto G.Moto G 2015 is propelled by the same old quad-core Snapdragon 410 SoC clocked at 1.4GHz that we saw with the second gen Moto G last year, and paired with 1GB/ 2GB RAM. The display comes in the form of a 5-inch FullHD screen.Moto G 3rd gen has also evolved relatively on the…

Flipkart Launches Physical Experience Stores for Click and Collect Shopping Experience

Flipkart, India’s largest growing e-commerce destination has launched 20 ‘experience zones’ across the country facilitating prospective buyers to select the products and pick it up themselves. This new model of retail will help Flipkart to aquire non-tech savvy customers and it will also be a great choice in-case you want something from Flipkart pronto. The Experience stores will allow customer to book a product and collect it from the stores at a time convenient to him. Problems like restricted entry of delivery boys into workplaces, delayed delivery and non-availability of the customers has paved way for this new system.Apart from the above stated reasons, Flipkart was facing a high number of returns and fake orders, this was probably cutting in through their revenues considerably. The experience store will minimize these incidents and helps Flipkart by reducing their dependency on the logistics. The icing on the cake comes in the form of instant returns, spot trails, open box deliver…

The Lava Pixel V1: One Step Forward for Android One, but Perhaps Two Steps Back as Well!

This is what the first Android One handsets should have been!”That was the exclamation I heard from at least half a dozen people in a crowded room in the Taj Palace Hotel in Delhi as Lava took the wrappings off what is now being called the second generation of Android One. Well, it certainly is its second coming. And unlike the first, which had seen three very similar devices being launched at the same time, this time there was just one.But it was easily the most powerful Android One device around. By a country mile. The Lava Pixel V1 comes with a 5.5 inch 720p display, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB of onboard storage, a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 8.0-megapixel front camera, 3G support and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS connectivity. It was designed on sleek lines and at 135 grammes, was relatively light. Yes, there were some quibbles about its processor (a quad core MediaTek 6582) being a bit long in the tooth and the absence of 4G, but on the flip side, this device came with a massive (for this price)…
