Yahoo Ad Network Targeted In Malvertising Attack Seeking Flash Vulnerability

A group of hackers took advantage of Yahoo’s popular network of sites to perpetrate a wide-spread attack on visitors to those sites through ads. The aim was to get malware onto users’ computers and take advantage of outdated versions of Flash running on their machines. The malicious advertising (“malvertising”) campaign began on July 28, according to online security software firm Malwarebytes, which detected the activity. The New York Times reports that the hackers bought ads across the Yahoo network. When users on Windows machines visited those sites, the malicious ads could automatically download malware onto unprotected computers. The malware then searched for an outdated version of Adobe Flash through which it could take over the computer and either demand ransom from the user to get control back or generate revenue for the hackers by driving Web traffic to websites that pay them for visits.A Yahoo spokesperson said of the attack, “As soon as we learned of this issue, our team took…

How To Win The Hearts And Minds Of Emerging Technology’s Ruling Class: The Early Adopters

If you’ve read Geoffrey A. Moore’s seminal book on technology, “Crossing the Chasm,” then you know the critical role that early adopters play in launching a new technology category.Early adopters are the judge, jury, and yes, executioner when it comes to determining the success of a new technology category. Win them over, like the crowds at the Colosseum, and they will help propel your product across the chasm and into the hands of the early majority crowd. Fall into the abyss, and even the most promising tech may be doomed to obscurity.Given the growth of the marketing technology landscape, there would appear to be more martech successes than not crossing the chasm. One recent successful crossing is tag management, a new type of application that makes it easier to manage and connect disparate technologies and data sources.Tag management crossed the chasm quickly, within two years, according to Jeff Lunsford, CEO of Tealium (my employer), which provides enterprise tag management. “Oth…

Speaking to 14,000 attendees, the leader of the world’s largest retailer threw down the gauntlet when it comes to omni-channel marketing, forever creating a baseline for the retail industry.“I want us to stop talking about digital and physical retail as if they’re two separate things,” McMillon told attendees. “The customer doesn’t think of it that way, and we can’t either.”Walmart taught us how to build a retailing empire, creating the textbook for serving customers at 11,000 brick-and-mortar stores globally. Yahoo Website Eclipsed With One of the Largest Malvertising Attack

Just when we thought that we have heard enough about malware and ransomware, Yahoo’s advertising network is reportedly hit by a malware. Hackers seem to have exploited an Adobe Flash bug in order to gain access to Yahoo’s ad network and install malware on the computers of users that visited Yahoo sites. According to Siliconrepublic, the malware was planted across most of the news sub-sections including sports, finance, celebrity and games sites. The malware swung into action as soon as the visitors visited the site and secretly dumped files to their systems. It is still unclear on how many people have been affected by this bug but considering the fact that Yahoo’s website receives an estimated 6.9bn visits per month the number of victims can be quite high. The attack was carried out by piggybacking on a Microsoft Azure website. Thankfully, the campaign was stopped immediately after MalwareBytes informed Yahoo of the exploit. The malware which downloaded itself onto the system consisted …

Facebook Dumps Plan To Cut Off Device-Level Data After Advertiser Revolt

Facebook has reversed a plan to cut off device-level data collection for mobile app advertising campaigns after a revolt by game developers and advertisers. In May, Facebook told ad buyers, developers and mobile measurement partners that it would no longer share data about how their mobile app ads were performing on specific devices. Facebook campaign results would be limited to ad- and campaign-level data. The policy change originally was to go into effect on Aug. 20, but was delayed until Nov. 4 after strong opposition from game makers, which was detailed in a Venture Beat piece last month.Facebook’s position was — and still is — that device-specific information about how ads are performing isn’t that valuable. App marketers strongly disagreed. As AdExchanger reported today: “In particular, game makers such as Supercell and Kabam, many of whom spend millions of dollars a month to drive and optimize installs of their apps, they “… balked at what they saw as an unfair restriction on thei…

Hootsuite Is Rolling Out New Instagram Integration, Including Scheduling Workaround

Evan Lorne / Shutterstock.com Instagram has never been the easiest social media network for marketers to manage.Designed from the outset as a mobile platform, its desktop interface and tools have always been something of an afterthought. And unlike major social rivals like Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest and its big brother Facebook, Instagram doesn’t permit posting from third-party tools.Hootsuite is working to ease those limitations, rolling out an Instagram integration that gives users of the popular social management tool several handy time-saving features. Social teams using Hootsuite will be able to share access to Instagram accounts across teams, monitor Instagram activity and create approval workflows, and respond to comments and engage with users. Because the Instagram monitoring exists side-by-side with other social streams, marketers will have an easier time, cross-promoting their Instagram activity on Facebook and Twitter, Hootsuite said in a release.More from Hootsuite’s rel…
