Ohm Wants to Replace your Dull and Heavy Car Battery with a Light and Smart One

Our car battery is one of the last things you could think of becoming smart, but there are some folks out there who want to make this happen. And what’s there to make smarter, right? Well, what about the fact that your car battery dies without warning, leaving you stranded, and that it’s quite heavy, not to mention the ecological threat that they pose.Ohm is a startup which wants to change that, being lighter and smarter. While most automotive batteries weigh around 40 pounds, Ohm thinks it can become a smarter care battery with a weight of just 6 pounds. This is made possible thanks to a more advanced technology than just lead plates – an EDLC supercapacitor capable of dumping enough energy to start your engine, and a set of smaller batteries free of toxic heavy metals.Furthermore, Ohm is smart enough to keep you from accidentally draining your battery if you forget to turn your lights off. The device will automatically turn itself off when it gets critically low, and then switch its…

Follow The Leader: How Starbucks Is Dominating Mobile Commerce

If someone had told you 10 years ago that a coffee company out of Seattle would lead the mobile revolution, you probably would have laughed. While peddling coffee is hardly an Old World craft, it has become synonymous with low tech (not to mention donuts and bagels) over the years.Yet in mobile commerce, retail behemoth Starbucks is dominating in 2015.Nearly Double Digital Revenue From Mobile Sales? Yes, Please!I mentioned Starbucks as as a shining example of “frictionless commerce” in an article last year, touting the fact that 10% of its 2013 annual revenue was coming via its mobile app (even more impressive given the fact that the app needs to be attached to a Starbucks loyalty card). Now, two years later, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has stated that 18% of all transactions are coming from mobile, a number that is likely to climb with the new mobile “order and pay” functionality it is piloting with 4,000+ stores. While I am not a big proponent of most companies developing their own m…

Why Google, Bing, Facebook, Twitter & Others Should Collaborate: A Proposition For An Online Reputation Issues Clearinghouse

For those with online reputation crises, the internet is a hostile and damaging place. When one is attacked online, it can negatively affect one’s ability to get a job, make new relationships or attract new customers. While individuals may fight defamation, it’s quite costly and requires cooperation of websites to remove the malicious content. When search engines, social media companies and other sites receive defamation-removal requests and court orders, they sometimes resist aiding the victims, in large part due to the costs. But I have a proposition for these companies that could help reduce hassles and costs for everyone involved. Read on, and I’ll explain. The Huge Scale Of The ORM IssueAs brief background, there’s no question that the scale of this issue is simply gargantuan. Millions of individuals and companies suffer because of the way lies and mischaracterizations can be so easily lobbed on the internet. Once out there, these negative items can frequently begin ranking in sear…

New From Buffer: The Ability To Post & Schedule Native Video On Facebook & Twitter

Buffer has a gift for busy social media pros: the ability to upload, post and schedule native video to Facebook and Twitter.Rolling out today, the new feature will be a boon to users of Buffer’s popular social management platform, at least those who produce video content. As far as we can tell, Buffer is the first social tool to offer such a feature, and it is available to all Buffer users, including those on the free individual plan.Buffer video posts — the app accepts mp4, mov or avi files of up to one gigabyte — on Facebook will show up as native video that plays automatically without audio in people’s News Feeds. Twitter videos that are 30 seconds or less will also post natively, and play without a user clicking or tapping. Twitter videos that are more than 30 seconds will display in a Twitter card that people will have to click to play.Buffer video posts to Google+ pages will also appear as native video there. For LinkedIn and Pinterest, which don’t have native video, Buffer vide…

Find Your Facebook Audience Gold!

Welcome to the Psychographic Targeting Hot House series, a column that originally appeared weekly on aimClear blog. Because of the popularity among our readers, we’ve partnered with Third Door Media, publisher of Search Engine Land and Marketing Land, to bring you this weekly column. We love Facebook advertising for the wealth of targeting options it provides. Sometimes we get so deep into the partner categories, layering one on top of another like a mountainous social marketing club sandwich, that we worry we’ll never see the light of day again. (Don’t worry, no online marketers were lost in the writing of this post!)In this edition of aimClear’s Targeting Hot House we’ll explain how you can uncover audience insights that shed light on large, profitable pockets and variables you may have missed. While we’re in there, we sometimes find cool ways to use the targeting environment that teach us more about the audience we’re trying to find. Turning different demographic indicators on and of…

India has got Tech Talent… and a Lot of it Stays in India Too!

The recent appoint of Sundar Pichai as Google CEO has been widely celebrated in India, but it has also led to a familiar complaint – that India is not capable of keeping its own talent and that the best of Indian tech ends up overseas. Look at Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai, we are told. People of tech genius who are now in charge of tech behemoths like Microsoft and Google. Why didn’t they stay in India? And all this leads to the rather rapid conclusion that India does not respect its own tech talent and has no “killer tech products.” Where is India’s Google or Facebook, the cynics remark? They are absent because India “loses” all its tech grey cells to the West that appreciates it more.We at TechPP beg to differ. No, we are not going to go to the extreme of saying that conditions are perfect in India for tech entrepreneurship. But neither are we going to start moaning that the best of Indian talent has gone West. But neither are we going with “India is a disaster for tech entrepreneur…

Xiaomi has finally launched the iterative upgrade for Redmi Note 4G. The newest phablet comes with a full-HD display and runs the Android Lollipop based MIUI 7. The Redmi Note 2 was unveiled at an event in China and has been currently priced at CNY 899 which nearly equates to Rs 9,000/$140 while the Redmi Note 2 Prime has been priced at CNY 999 which is slightly higher at Rs 10,000/$156.In order to keep the base prices low, Xiaomi has also come up with a 3G only device which will be priced at around Rs 8,000. Only difference between the 4G and the 3G versions is the LTE connectivity feature apart from which both the devices are almost similar. As of now, the company did not divulge about the Indian plans for Redmi Note 2 and hopefully they would share the details at the company’s event in New Delhi scheduled for 19th of this month. The Redmi Note 2 Prime features a processor that is clocked at greater speed than the plain Redmi Note 2 and it will also come with 32GB of internal storage…

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is Official Along with Adreno 500 series GPUs

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 and 808 were supposed to be the benchmarks for mobile computing this year and power a generous number of high end smartphones. Qualcomm entered a fray when the Snapdragon 810 started overheating incessantly and this caused a huge wave of dissatisfaction among the buyers. This time around, even Samsung strayed away from the Snapdragon 810 and instead stuck to its very own Exynos across all Galaxy S6 variants.Unsurprisingly the technical fiasco of the Snapdragon 810 seems to have a pronounced  effect on the companies financials. The “increased concentration” at the high end market might spell further trouble for the company as Apple controls a major chunk of the market. Qualcomm rakes in a better profit selling its high end SoCs, and iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus only use the Qualcomm modem. Although Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi are selling low end phones with Qualcomm processors, it is less beneficial for the company since the SoCs are less profitable as it …

Reaction To Its Facebook Video Inspires VW To Create Baby Stroller With Automatic Brakes

Back in April, VW Netherlands posted an ad on Facebook featuring vehicle owners who wondered why other items — such as strollers, bikes, gerbil cages and toy doors  — don’t have the same awesome features a VW does. That ad garnered over one-half million views. One Facebook commenter wondered aloud why baby strollers don’t have automatic brakes. After all, if cars can have them, surely, a baby stroller can as well.So VW took that idea and ran with it. It created a baby stroller with automatic brakes. But that’s not all. Going a step further, VW built in tech that allowed the baby stroller to automatically follow a person using some sort of remote GPS device. Since launch on August 3, that video has been viewed 280,000 times, liked 5,758 times and shared 4,228 times. Now whether or not this nifty invention progresses past the marketing stunt stage remains to be seen. But, seriously, would it not be so simple to implement automatic braking for strollers? Now having the stroller automaticall…

MarTech Landscape: What Is Web Analytics Software?

Note: This is part of our Martech Landscape series, which will look at various marketing technology platforms over the coming months. For marketers, the term “analytics” now has many qualifiers, thanks to the rapid evolution of marketing technology. There are tools to measure social analytics, mobile analytics, descriptive analytics, web analytics, call analytics, real-time analytics, predictive analytics, and more. All of these are conveniently wrapped up into broader terms such as “digital analytics” or “marketing analytics.”But the foundation of any good digital marketing strategy still rests on collecting, analyzing and reporting on website data. Who’s coming to your website? How did they find it? What are they doing when they get there? Are visitors doing what you want them to do — and if not, how can you improve the user experience? How can you establish and collect the right metrics to improve the overall customer experience to drive more business? It all starts with web analytic…
