For Major Publishers, Facebook Referral Traffic Passes Google Again

Facebook has landed the latest punch in the heavyweight battle with Google for referral traffic supremacy.According to new data from Parse.ly — a content analytics platform serving some of the biggest publishers on the internet — the social network passed Google as the leading source of referral traffic in June and in July extended its lead to three percentage points, 38.2 percent to 35.2 percent. It’s the second time in less than a year that Facebook has moved ahead of Google in Parse.ly’s rankings; it also inched ahead last fall.Parse.ly’s data doesn’t come from a huge sample. But the company said its 400 clients, including Fox News, Telegraph Media Group, Mashable, Business Insider, Condé Nast, The Atlantic and Reuters, are representative of the overall publishing market. And these results dovetail with others that show social media pulling ahead of search in referral traffic.Of course, it remains to be seen whether Facebook’s advantage will stick. We asked Martin Laprise, Parse.ly’…

Pinterest Snags Monetization Product Manager From Twitter

So far 2015 has been the year of monetization for Pinterest. From the official launch of Promoted Pins in January to a flurry of new ad formats in May and the introduction of Buyable Pins in July, the company is pushing hard to cash in on its popular social network.Today, the company continued that trend by announcing the hiring of a prominent advertising product manager from Twitter. Nipoon Malhorta, formerly head of Twitter’s brand advertising product team, has joined Pinterest to focus on the ad technology that powers Pinterest’s money making efforts.“Nipoon is a proven leader with the ability to execute and scale teams and revenue generating products,” Pinterest head of product for monetization (and Malhorta’s new boss) Jonathan Shottan said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have him as part of the team as we continue to grow and innovate on ads and commerce.”Before leading brand advertising at Twitter, Malhorta ran Bing’s Whole Page Ranking product team, which is responsible fo…

The Customer Experience Is Everyone’s Business

The experience people have with brands today doesn’t have a traditional start and end point. Quite the contrary: The experience a brand creates for its customers is really all about evergreen engagement across all screens, senses, and, in many ways, sensibilities.Customers now have multiple points of entry (aka engagement) with brands, especially within this oversaturated, media-driven environment we all live in, and it’s made me wonder who truly “owns” the customer experience.Simple answer: everyone (even your very own customers)!Customers can, at any given point of time or even all at once, engage with your brick-and-mortar storefronts, your digital storefronts, your social channels, your on-domain communities, your customer service team, and so on. And those are just your owned and operated properties.Add to that the myriad third-party touch points that your customers regularly tap to engage with your brand indirectly, and that “customer experience” net you cast becomes even wider.…

Why Conversion Rate Isn’t The Whole Story: Using Customer Data To Predict Value And Optimize Media Spend

There have been some tremendous advances in understanding the value of your digital (and offline) marketing initiatives in recent years. And with everything from tracking pixels to sophisticated analytics and attribution platforms, many marketers have finally begun to use the ocean of available data to guide their marketing dollars. For those doing this well, it means knowing just how much it costs to acquire a new lead or customer, sell a product or service, or get people to interact and engage in upper funnel activities. For those not doing this, in most industries at this point in history, it means playing catch-up just to stay competitive. But while all of the latest tools and technologies are helping us to figure out how our different marketing channels are helping us achieve X, Y or Z and at what cost, many of them are missing a critical component to the equation: the customer or prospect. While it’s great to acquire a new customer, it’s even better to acquire the right kind of cus…

The Smartphone Experience vs Specs Debate

When it came to smartphones, what is more important: experience or specifications? The folks at Moto – very understandably, given the comparatively modest hardware lying within their device – had planted themselves firmly in the ‘experience’ camp as far as the Moto G went (they had interestingly not been as disparaging of hardware and spec sheets when they launched the Moto Turbo but that is another story for another day). And the days that have followed have seen the debate seeping into tech circles as reviews of the device have been published (yes, ours will be out soon too). At the cost of sounding Churchillian, it is almost as if an iron curtain has descended between two sides – one swearing by the spec sheet, the other by the experience. The truth, as always, lies somewhere in between these two extremes. But first, a little background. Although it had been a part of the PC world (where Macs and PCs fought over it), the “specs vs experience” argument in phones had first emerged somew…

Swiss Luxury Watch Maker Blends Traditional Watch and Apple Watch

At a time when smartwatches are trying (but sort of failing) to replace traditional watches, a Swiss Luxury watch manufacturer is trying to balance the act by combining a Swiss watch and Apple Watch together! The dual faced watch from Swiss based Luxury watch company Nico Gerard has been produced by creating a bracelet which will allow users to wear both a traditional luxury timepiece and an Apple Watch together. The Apple Watch is placed on the inside of the wrist and the company claims that this will provide an extra layer of privacy for the users. Nico Gerard President Adam Pluemer told BBC that “We were not going to give up our nice luxury Swiss timepiece for the Apple Watch, but it provides a ton of technological benefits.”The luxury watch maker is taking an aim at the premium segment of the market and as a result, the Nico Gerards Swiss-made dual-watchband starts at a whopping $9,300 for the “basic” stainless steel version and soars all the way up to a $112,000 for the 18 Karat g…

“Just a Guy”: The Person That’s Carl Pei

Most know him as one of the driving forces behind OnePlus and the brains behind iconic devices like the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2. But there is more to Carl Pei, co-founder and head of Global, OnePlus. We try to find out more about the man behind the tech and the products by asking the man himself. What follows is a decidedly un-Techy and supremely personal Q&A about a man who has turned the phone world on its head but insists that he is “just a guy.”1. What does your name mean?A Google search tells me Carl means “a peasant or man of low birth.” Heh, maybe not the most flattering.2. Do you have a nickname? For the longest time, I was known on online forums and in games such as Counter-Strike as Err0r. Haven’t used nicknames for a while though.3. Which is your favorite film?I watch a lot of movies and enjoy the usual suspects. One movie that I really like, that probably isn’t on anyone’s favorite movie list, is Accepted. It’s about a guy that didn’t get into college, and starts a fa…

Alleged Live Photos of Nexus 5 (2015) Surface, Dual LED and a Rear Fingerprint Scanner on the Cards

The live photos for Nexus 5 (2015) prototype have been making rounds and it surely does giveaway some of the features it will debut with. Unlike all the other premium phones in the market, Nexus doesn’t come clad in a shiny metal armor, and instead it sticks to a plastic build with sort of a matte finish. The back panel hosts a protruding camera pod along with a traditional Nexus logo, the circular ring next to the camera unit seems to be the fingerprint scanner (like the one we saw on Gionee Elife E8). LG sticker at the bottom confirms the manufacturer. Last week’s renders pointed at two new Nexus devices this year, one with a smaller 5.2-inch display and another with a bigger 5.7-inch display. The chances are that both the phones will be sourced from different manufacturers, while the 5.2-inch Nexus 5 (2015) revealed in the renders above will still be manufactured by LG the larger Nexus might very well be manufactured from Huawei. The Nexus 5 (2015) is also expected to receive a bumpe…
