A Lot of Google’s Bloatware will no Longer be Pre-installed on new Android Devices

Software puritans, rejoice! It seems that your next Android smartphone or tablet will soon become less burdened with the usualy bloatware coming from Google itself. It’s quite annoying that there are quite a few pre-installed apps coming from OEMs and carriers, but we also have to swallow ‘mandatory’ apps coming from the Android maker, as well. But things are apparently going to change as it seems that Google Play Games, Google Play Books, Google+ and Google Newsstand are no longer required to be installed by those OEMS who want to install only Gmail, Youtube, Maps or other genuinely useful apps from Google. Phone makers were obliged to take a bunch of apps from Google when they only needed a few, but now the amount of bloatware is going to decrease.Google Earth and Google Keep are some other apps that aren’t a required part of the Google applications package, so it’s nice to see these four new ones join the ‘departing party’, as well. While the removal of Google Play Games, Google Pl…

Survey: Teens Spend 2X More Time With Mobile Than PCs Or TVs

American teens, (so-called “Millennial teens”) spend more than twice as much time per day with mobile devices than they do with conventional TV or desktop computers. That may be no surprise to anyone but it’s still sobering for marketers trying to reach this audience. That data comes from a broad new survey of 16 to 19 year olds by the Refuel agency (n=684) about their digital lives and attitudes. The study looked at a wide range of teen behavior around media, shopping and digital content. As one might expect from the data above, smartphones were ranked as teens’ most important device while TV was the least important of the choices offered:Smartphones — 55 percentLaptop — 18 percentTablet — 12 percentMusic player — 8 percentTV — 7 percentThe fact that TV was so little valued by teens is an ominous sign not only for TV hardware makers but for cable companies and suggests the cord-cutting trend will accelerate as these teens become independent buyers of services as renters and homeowners …

How to Leverage Social Media for SEO: Link Building

I recently asked a room of experienced marketers how they thought social media marketing could assist their SEO efforts. The answers were more or less what I had expected to hear:Social media helps foster relationships, which in turn helps build links and improves rankings.Social media aids in public relations, as a distribution channel and a means of generating easy online buzz.Social sharing provides a form of social proof, giving greater credibility and trustworthiness to your content.Brands can rank for their social networking profiles and receive greater visibility within the SERP.While these are all true, let’s focus on how link building on social platforms can help unite a brand’s social media marketing and SEO efforts. At the most basic level, social networking sites provide an easy way to share and distribute your message. If the content is seen by the right people, it can lead to new backlinks. In fact, there are measurable correlations between social shares and backlinks that…

New Android Phones: Less Google-App “Bloatware” Equals Less EU Scrutiny

Android Central is celebrating an apparent decision by Google to require fewer pre-loaded apps on forthcoming Android handsets. The site sees this as a strike against “bloatware,” the term often used by insiders to describe pre-loaded software.According to the report, “Google Play Games, Google Play Books, Google+ and Google Newsstand now join the ranks with Google Earth and Google Keep as apps that aren’t a required part of the Google applications package.” Those hardware makers that want Google Play still need to pre-load other apps such as YouTube, Gmail and Google Maps.In late 2014 The Information reported that the required number of pre-installed apps was being raised to 20 from 9. This move reduces that number, although I don’t know what the formal count is now.Third party complaints in the US and Europe have been filed over the question of Google “tying” the pre-installation of its own apps to use of Google Play by Android OEMs, which allegedly discriminates against competing t…

The Golden Path To Programmatic Premium

Much has been written over the past several years about the battle that traditional publishers have fought to adapt their business models to the dawning era of programmatic media buying. Quite frankly, those publishers are exhausted. Their print businesses in many instances have been completely destroyed. But then there are those who have fiercely committed to the new data-driven marketing marketplace and have acknowledged the opportunities in this brave new world. What many companies have realized is that investing in a premium content environment can be the way they can refashion and advance their businesses. In that respect, publishers are looking at a time of great opportunity. And as the entire industry wrings their hands over the recent reports of the rising consumer adoption of ad-blocking software in their browsers, it is a matter of survival for publishers to do everything possible to create an engaging, authenticated premium programmatic environment where ads are actually welco…

Want More ROI From Your Social Programs? Take A Look In The Mirror

A decade after social networks burst onto the marketing scene, new research from Altimeter Group has confirmed a shift that experts have predicted for years: Marketers are no longer too worried about scaling their social media programs.Instead, their number one priority today is integrating that social content into their existing digital marketing programs: websites, mobile apps, in-store and e-commerce experiences and so on. In fact, 82 percent of businesses report they’ve already begun the process. The hard truth is that as the majority of marketers still struggle to measure the ROI of traditional social media programs, more nontraditional social strategies — like using social login to gather valuable consumer data or driving product exploration by adding social elements to the customer experience — are quickly proving their worth. That’s because they connect with people in a way that feels natural to them.Consumers don’t just want more branded content thrown at them. They want conten…

Facebook Working on Bringing About New Profile Pages for Mobile Users

Facebook seems to be en-route in bringing about some major changes in the Mobile UI. The social networking giant is expected to overhaul the entire layout of Facebook app and bring about a fresh new approach by making it photocentric. The new approach is also expected to make the Facebook app work better on devices with smaller screen and will aim at better screen real estate management. Facebook has a huge audience of more than a 500-Million users hooked on mobile devices and this literally translates to about 78 percent of the total active users.Mobile users for Facebook are positively impacting on the revenue as 69 percent of Facebook’s $3.59 billion was garnered by mobile devices. The fact that users can access Facebook on their devices anytime and anywhere will automatically increase the probability of their transaction or interests in advertisement. Further the exponential growth in m-commerce and the aggressive app-only race by online businesses is further fuelling the ad-revenu…

WordPress 4.3 Brings Improved Password Security, Easier Text Formatting

Evan Lorne / Shutterstock.com Safer password management is one of the highlights in WordPress 4.3, which was released this week. Also added in the latest release are new text formatting shortcuts and the ability to change site menus in the Customizer, among other things.WordPress 4.3 brings a completely new approach to passwords. Facebook Gives The Gift Of GIFs To Some Brand Pages

When Facebook finally started displaying animated GIFs this spring, Pages were shut out. Only personal profiles could share the fun of one of the internet’s most playful visual shticks.Today, Facebook started to relax its no-GIFs-from-Pages policy. As reported first by TechCrunch, Wendy’s and Coca-Cola’s Brazilian brand Kuat posted GIFs today.Choosing a favorite ingredient is tough in this bowl.Posted by Wendy's on Thursday, August 20, 2015 A small number of Pages have been given GIF-ability as an experiment, Facebook confirmed. “GIFs can be a fun and compelling way to communicate, so we’ve started testing GIF support in posts and boosted posts for a small percentage of Facebook Pages,” a company spokesperson wrote in an email. “We will evaluate whether it drives a great experience for people before rolling it out to more Pages.”Like in personal profiles, GIFs are posted on Facebook by pasting in a link from a third-party source — Giphy, Imgur, Tumblr, etc. They won’t display if th…
