Jump-Start Your Content Marketing With These 4 Strategies

You’ve probably heard this before: “Content marketing is hard…Content marketing takes a long time.”Sorry to say, I’m not here to tell you that’s wrong: It is hard, and it does take time. But that doesn’t mean content marketing doesn’t work. It does. It just takes consistency, dedication and yes, time, before you see results. In the meantime, however, you’re going to be sad. You might even get mad. Hell, you may even be full-on depressed. You might offer a cry up to the heavens: “Why is my content not worrrrrrrking!!!” And you hear no booming answers in return. This, my friend, is called the content slog, as coined by Chris Bird of Vertical Measures (my employer) here. It’s that gap of disappointment where you’ve put in a good amount of time and effort into your content marketing strategy, and you aren’t seeing a return on your investment. This principle rings true for other digital media, too, and is where this content slog idea originated. In particular, Moz’s Rand Fishkin and BuzzMaven …

Stop The Interruptions! Marketing In The Age Of The Always-On Consumer

Let me set the scene: It’s 6:30 p.m. on a Tuesday night. I’m home, my wife’s home, my kids are home. Finally, we can start to wind down from a long day and enjoy some quality time together around the dinner table. Are you with me? We sit, plates are passed, first bites are taken, and…The phone rings. Who could possibly be calling right now, interrupting dinner? I pop up — It must be important if someone’s calling right now. It’s not a relative in peril. It’s not a homework question from a classmate. It’s not a work emergency. It’s a telemarketer with a “quick” political survey, a deal on a newspaper subscription, a timeshare offer, or any one of a million different promotions.I hang up, irritated at being interrupted, and spend at least the next 60 seconds complaining. And forget it if they call again — either that night or in the days that follow — I’m furious. Here’s the funny thing though; that deal might have been spot-on relevant in terms of price and product. Maybe I wanted a news…

Eddystone Beacon Explainer: An Interview With Google’s Chandu Thota

On July 14 Google announced a new developer initiative called Eddystone. It’s a new open format for Bluetooth low energy (BLE) beacons. It’s open-source, flexible, cross platform and will equally support iOS devices. In order to better understand how Eddystone works and Google’s perspective on its benefits and applications, I conducted an email interview of Google Engineering Director Chandu Thota. My questions are in bold and Thota’s answers follow. What makes Eddystone different or unique vs. other Beacon approaches (is it merely the platform agnosticism or other things too)?Eddystone is an open Bluetooth low energy beacon format published by Google on Github. There are three key differences that Eddystone offers developers and hardware manufacturers:Open: the specification is published on Github under the Apache 2.0 license so that manufacturers and developers can access, comment and contribute to it.Robust & extensible: supports multiple types of frames to carry payloads of diff…

Email Marketers: The Marketing Leaders Of The Future?

I have worked with many young(er) people over the years who have wondered where they could go with a career in email marketing. My advice to them? If they want to be in the marketing profession, they have limitless potential, because the skills taught in email will apply to almost all marketing of the future. In essence, the market is coming to them. It needs their skills. Email marketing is an extremely interesting career path because it teaches you how to work with data, technology and creative to develop personalized messages to a known group of people. When you add measurement, reporting and analysis for continuous improvement, you have built a skill set that is very useful in many applications. Several of those old colleagues of mine who went off to work at other companies have confirmed this theory, saying that their intensive training in email puts them well ahead of their peers.A change has been occurring in the marketplace over the last few years — marketers are using first-par…

Europe Widens Antitrust Probe Of Google Around Ad Contracts, Content “Scraping”

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that The European Commission (EC) is expanding its antitrust probe of Google. Currently the EC is in the late stages of its vertical search inquiry and has filed formal charges, which Google has until August 31 to rebut. It’s at an earlier stage of investigating Google’s management of the Android operating system.According to the Journal report, the EC is now investigating whether Google “abuses its dominance in advertising contracts with website operators and copies content from rival sites.” The first question goes to whether Google prevents online publishers from using rival advertising systems on their sites. This was initially investigated in Europe in 2010. The issue is now being exhumed amid a growing sense of Google’s vulnerability. The second question, about “scraping,” concerns whether Google “copies” content from others and uses it for its own competitive advantage. This came up several years ago when Google was indexing third party re…

IKEA Kicks Off Tweet Campaign In Canada & An Influential German Book Critic Reviews Its New Catalog

The Swedish furniture maker is continuing its lighthearted approach to marketing as it kicks off efforts to raise awareness of its 2016 catalog, which is being mailed out to customers this month and is mirrored online. In 2014, we saw IKEA promote its 2015 catalog as an ingenious new device, a “book book” — playing off the hype surrounding the release of the new iPhone around the same time. This year, it’s combining humor, social media and a techie gimmick to introduce the new catalog in Canada and in German-speaking countries. The German language effort, which comes with English subtitles, features an influential book critic — Hellmuth Karasek — who the audience likely knows as the long-time culture editor of Der Spiegel and as a TV personality on Das Literarische Quartett (which translates as The Literary Quartet).Among his observations (made against the background of sophisticated classical music):“The book by IKEA could be criticized for featuring more pictures than characters.““The…
