Here’s Where The World’s Largest Media Buyer Spends Its Money

Martin Sorrell. Image copyright by World Economic Forum/Photo by Michael Wuertenberg The world’s largest ad agency holding company, WPP, spends $76 billion annually on advertising through it’s buying and planning arm, GroupM.On Thursday, GroupM announced an advertising deal with BuzzFeed. The companies did not disclose the amount GroupM committed to the spending over the span of the one-year deal, but The Guardian reported the total is thought to be less than $100 million. That’s a big coup for BuzzFeed, but the investment pales to the $3 billion GroupM spends with it’s biggest client, Google, which encompasses search, display, mobile and video. Here’s how the media companies stack up with GroupM, as reported by The Guardian.Where GroupM SpendsGoogle  $3 billionNews Corp  $2.5 billionFacebook  $1.0 billionYahoo  $430 millionAOL  $130 millionTwitter  $120 millionIn 2013, WPP founder and CEO, Martin Sorrell, announced that Google would soon overtake News Corp as the top recipient of ad in…

The Brand’s CMO, Its CFO And An Agency Shill Walk Into A Bar…

It’s Friday, so Mark the CMO, Fiona the CFO and Shell, a representative of their agency, end the day by heading to happy hour. The casual environment (and probably a little wine) fuels an enlightening discussion about marketing’s role in the business as a whole.Bartender:  “What’ll you have?”Marketing Mark:  “Pinot Grigio, but Fiona is paying.”Fiona Finance:  “Just ice water. With all that Mark spends on marketing, we can’t afford anything else.”Shell the Shill:  “It’s on me, Fiona. I’ll have a Cabernet.”Fiona Finance:  “In that case, I’ll have a Martini. Hendrick’s!”Marketing Mark:  “And what’s with the crack about how much money I spend? Every dollar I spend makes you money!”Shell the Shill:  “He’s right, Fiona. He should be spending a lot more.”Fiona Finance:  “You both must have started early. We barely make money as a company. We had a 4% operating profit last year, and we’ll be lucky to hang onto that this year. The stock price is sucking wind, and folks on Wall Street are talki…

Native Ads: Effective But Are They Accepted By Consumers?

Marketers have enthusiastically embraced “native advertising” and there’s an emerging body of evidence supporting the proposition that it’s more effective than traditional display. The latest addition to that corpus comes in the form of a report just published by the MMA.Yet all is not rainbows and sunshine in native advertising land. There’s competing data showing a large percentage of consumers are ambivalent (if not hostile) toward native advertising.First the positive news for the industry. The MMA report, which is basically a roundup of third party studies on mobile native ad effectiveness, offers the following metrics in support of the format:Mobile native ads performed as much as 10X better compared to mobile display advertising at similar frequencyUsers gave mobile native ads 3X more attention than traditional banner adsUsers spent 40 percent more time interacting with native ads than with standard onesAverage brand recall with native ads was more than 2X the control group in …

Measuring Accessibility In The User Experience (UX) And The Searcher Experience

Accessibility is an important facet of the user experience and of one of its subsets, the searcher experience.Too often, Web professionals put users and technology into silos. Usability and UX professionals view accessibility from a human/user perspective. And technical search engine optimization (SEO) professionals view accessibility purely from a technology perspective. For example, Wikipedia’s definition of Web accessibility takes on the human perspective:Web accessibility refers to the inclusive practice of removing barriers that prevent interaction with, or access to websites, by people with disabilities. When sites are correctly designed, developed and edited, all users have equal access to information and functionality. In my opinion, website accessibility means creating an online environment in which all users, not only those with disabilities, are able to easily navigate, interact with and understand your website content. In his initial User Experience Honeycomb, information arc…

Pictures of the Upcoming Sony Xperia Z5 Leak Confirming a 23MP Camera

Sony has created a bit of a mess with its most recent smartphones from the Xperia line. The company had initially announced the flagship Xperia Z4 only in Japan and a few other countries, but then it realized that wasn’t the smartest move and it unveiled the Xperia Z3+, which was pretty much the same Xperia Z4, only with a different name, and for a much broader audience. But with the upcoming Xperia Z5, it seems that Sony is back to a healthier and easier to understand release schedule, as the handset is expected to be announced at this year’s IFA conference in Berlin, the same place where the Xperia Z3 trio was launched. While last year we saw two new smartphones and a new tablet being unveiled, this time it seems we’re going to witness the unveil of three handsets –  the Z5, the Z5 Compact, and the Z5 Premium.Sony Mobile’s social media channels have inadvertently published a couple of press pictures of the upcoming Xperia Z5 flagship and XperiaBlog publication was quick enough to sna…

Mind-blowing – 1 Billion People Use Facebook in a Single Day

A few years back, nobody would’ve guessed that there’s going to be a website that’ll really challenge Google for the title of the world’s most visited website. Facebook has managed to achieve that feat and its growth isn’t stopping, as the CEO of the company has announced that there are now more than 1 billion people who use Facebook in a single day.The milestone was reached on Monday, when a billion people used the service, according to founder Mark Zuckerberg, who said the following:“We just passed an important milestone. For the first time ever, one billion people used Facebook in a single day. On Monday, 1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family. When we talk about our financials, we use average numbers, but this is different. This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it’s just the beginning of connecting the whole world.”He further added:“I’m so proud of our community for the progress we’ve made. Our community stands for giving eve…

The Pros And Cons Of Responsive Design

Most marketers now accept the importance of having a mobile strategy for ad landing pages, but which way should you go? Currently, there are three widely accepted methods to make web pages work on mobile devices: responsive design, dynamic serving and maintaining separate mobile URLs.In short, responsive design utilizes a fluid layout which changes and adapts to whatever the visitor’s screen size happens to be; in other words, mobile and desktop visitors are served the exact same URL/content, it just changes by responding to the size of the screen, device and browser. The other two options, dynamic serving and separate mobile URLs, involve serving different HTML code or entirely different pages to mobile visitors. Each has its benefits and drawbacks for marketers. For all the details, check out my full column on Search Engine Land.

Retail Marketing Strategies: Connecting The Dots

Today’s retailers are still very much siloed between operational, brick-and-mortar, and digital and social mobile teams.Often, store level teams do not receive timely communication from corporate regarding important new pricing strategies and promotions, and social, digital and mobile efforts may not be consistent with what is happening in the field in real time.Priorities In Digital Marketing Drive Brick-and-Mortar TransactionsWe have come a long way from the late 1800s, when Sears, Roebuck and Co. offered its first catalog. Omni-channel retailing, or multi-channel retailing, which uses a variety of methods to reach the consumer, is becoming a reality. While many businesses take advantage of the various avenues of digital social networking promotions (think Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram), the challenge for today’s marketing world is connecting the dots of one all-inclusive mobile marketing strategy. Many marketing teams are stretched thin, and communication can be challenging between …

Xolo Looks to Cut Losses; to go Online Exclusive

If there is something we failed to understand in the Indian tech scene over the past few years, it has to be Lava’s branding strategy. Xolo was launched as a premium brand for Lava’s devices back in 2012. And since then, both the brands – Lava and Xolo have managed to co-exist, and at times, competing against each other. Now we hear, that Lava is looking to cut losses at Xolo and will keep it online exclusive.According to our sources within and outside the company, Lava has already fired several employees under Xolo – mostly from the sales and marketing teams. Over the years, the unusual strategy of having multiple brands had resulted in several teams overlapping with one another, and now the company is trimming down its resources to cut the losses. Xolo has been dealing in losses for a while, unable to take the burnt of competing with Micromax and Chinese onslaught from the likes of Xiaomi and Lenovo. In fact, we hear that Xolo is sitting on unsold inventory worth over 250 crores (~$…

Did Apple Sell Everyone a Massive Dummy with the Apple Watch?

There is a story in Dave Trott’s wonderful book, One + One = Three, in which he tells us how the erstwhile USSR reduced the US to a nervous mess by launching the first satellite (Sputnik), the first animal in space (Leika the dog) and the first man in space (Yuri Gagarin). The launches had the US in a tizzy, made the USSR appear like a major power and most importantly, forced the US to invest heavily in a space program to send the first man to the moon. The truth, however, was that the USSR barely had enough money at the end of the Second World War. Their scientists had been given the task to make long range missiles but found they could barely send a metal sphere into orbit – the first satellite, Sputnik, was just an empty ball with a transmitter. But the US did not know that and its reaction verged on the hysterical, spurring the USSR into more ‘firsts’ in space, even though these were threadbare efforts. Each first stunned the US and made the USSR appear more powerful. The result? T…

This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it’s just the beginning of connecting the whole world.”In Facebook’s latest financial statement the company reported that on average 968 million people used the social network daily in June. Facebook Signals That It Will Start Cracking Down On Video Piracy

Facebook’s meteoric growth in video — from afterthought to more than 4 billion daily views in less than a year — has come with some controversy. There’s been grousing that a three-second glimpse of autoplay video in the News Feed isn’t enough time to register a significant view. More damningly, there have been accusations that much of Facebook’s video surge has been built by people stealing content and uploading it on Facebook, one study finding that pirated video accounted for more than 70 percent of Facebook’s 1,000 most popular videos. As Recode noted today, George Strompolos, CEO of Fullscreen one of the biggest YouTube video networks, tweeted in June that he was “getting very tired of seeing our videos ripped there with no way to monitor or monetize.” This month, prominent YouTube creator Hank Green called out the social network for “theft and lies” in regards to its video efforts and a Facebook product manager responded that the company was working on the issue.Today, Facebook mad…

The footer ribbon features a rounded install button and is custom-colored based on the dominant color of either the cover photo or the app icon.Users can also click the “More images” button in the cover photo to see more screenshots of the app.Text Ad UpdateThe new text ad interstitial (on the right below) is meant to be easier to read, with a bigger headline and ad copy moved up the screen.
