Google Sues SEO Firm For Making False Partnership Claims In Illegal Robocalls

Pinterest Says It Has 100 Million Monthly Active Users

For the first time in its five-year history, Pinterest has released its user total and it’s a big round one: 100 million monthly active members. That’s still well behind Twitter and Instagram’s 300 million+ and Facebook’s 1.5 billion, but Pinterest has been making the case that it should be considered less a social network and more a search and discovery service. It would rather be compared to Google and argues that because Pinterest users are uniquely interested and engaged with products, the platform is an especially good environment for marketers.Pinterest shared more evidence to bolster its case today. It said 70 percent of its users engage with content on the network by saving or clicking on something. And that the number of searches within Pinterest has increased 81 percent in the last year. And that two-thirds of content people Pin come from business’ websites (a stat that the company has released previously).“People are planning out really core and important parts of their live…

Creating Synergy Between Social Media And Search

Social media image copyright rvlsoft In my last exploration of leveraging social media for SEO, I discussed how one can utilize social networks for link-building purposes. However, link building is only one of many ways that social media marketing and search can fuel one another.Let’s explore some other social-search synergies.Keyword DataSocial media can provide a rich secondary source of keyword information. The language used on social networks tends to be very conversational, and studying it is particularly useful for finding fresh, emerging keywords and naturally formed key phrases that might otherwise have remained hidden using conventional keyword research techniques. At BrightonSEO in April, I discussed a free data-mining system for keyword research using the Twitter API. If this is a little too technical for you, there are some other, simpler ways of drilling into this data. With a user-friendly tool like Foller.me, you can input your company and competitor Twitter usernames and …

Jumpshot Elite Launches To Provide Competitive Search Query And Conversion Data

Going a step further, Jumpshot Elite is designed to give marketers search access to conversion data for organic and paid search queries on other sites globally.“Ever since search engines encrypted search results, marketers have been in the dark about keywords, impacting not only the insight into their own search investments, but also their ability to unearth high converting keywords for their competitors,” said Deren Baker, CEO of Jumpshot.San Francisco-based Jumpshot relies on downloaded browser plug ins from data partners to gather search query and conversion data and says it has access to traffic on HTTPS sites and pages such as shopping cart pages. Cutting Edge Tech And The Agency: Q&A With Benjamin Spiegel Of MMI Agency

For brands and agencies to keep up with the constantly evolving consumer landscape, they need to be on the leading cusp of innovation — which often means technology-based innovation. The challenge is that most of the world’s top developers do not want to work for a brand, or even an agency. They want to work for Facebook, Google or another shiny startup. For agencies, this means they need to either accept that they will not always have the best developers or find alternative solutions. Since the rise of advertising technology, the idea of having technology departments within agencies has been much discussed; this concept leads to interesting new models. The Houston-based MMI agency, whose clients include Shell, Minute Maid, nrg, Air Liquide, Allstate and the US Department of Defense, recently struck a partnership with a UK company called The Sandpit — a relationship meant to help MMI stay at the forefront of technology. (After this interview was conducted, the agency also announced a dea…

Facebook Adds Support For Third-Party Verified Viewable Impression Bidding

Twin Design / Shutterstock.com Facebook is getting on board with the move to buy digital advertising based on impressions that are served in view on users’ screens. Thursday, the company announced support for viewable impression bidding on all News Feed advertising, including text, photo, link and video ads.Third party video ad viewability verification will be handled by Moat. The Moat integration will also give advertisers stats on Facebook video ad views and view lengths.Facebook says Moat technology will eventually be used to verify other News Feed ad units as well as ad on Instagram. The MRC standard for viewability for display ads is that 50 percent of the ad’s pixels be in view for at least one second. For video the duration is 2 seconds. Facebook’s viewable impression standard is 100 percent of the ad being in view, from top to bottom. Though, given the scrolling habits of users through the Facebook News Feed, the 100 percent viewability threshold isn’t much of a stretch for the …

Why You Need An Independent Analytics Audit

In front of you is an analytics report touting the success of a recent digital marketing campaign. Full of colorful charts and graphics, the report demonstrates how the campaign drove an unbelievable number of visits to your website. A stirring in your gut tells you something isn’t right. The numbers look right, but are they? Did the team measure the right things? Why did they choose the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) they are reporting on? Do they fully understand how the KPIs correlate to overall business objectives?Do you fully understand the KPIs and their evolution over time?Your gut is probably right, so you decide to initiate an analytics audit conducted by an independent auditor. The auditor’s report proves that your gut was, in fact, correct. Now you think your original marketing firm is either inept or run by con artists. Of course, they may well be extremely good at what they do and simply bad at analytics, or maybe they were just trying to showcase their efforts in the bes…

The Biases In Online Marketing That Drive Crazy Decisions

I was pleased to come across an article on Business Insider: “20 cognitive biases that screw up your decisions.” Now that’s a title a Conversion Scientist could love. The biases described in the article rule the Web. They are embraced, coddled and encouraged by marketers and business owners, like cute little puppies.Make no mistake: They will grow up to be dogs. They’ll stain your carpets, chew up your furniture, oppress the children and run away at the first chance.Of course, all owners adapt to our pets. By “adapt,” I mean we employ “choice-supportive bias,” described this way in the article:That cute puppy will become a carpet-staining, full-grown dog. And you’ll still love it. Biases Look Like ExpertiseYour Web team means well. Your designers, developers and consultants believe they are offering good advice based on experience and brilliance. However, without data to back them up, they are just bias zombies looking for the next person to misguide. No team is immune. Here are some of t…

Shopify Opens Door For More Shopping On Facebook

Facebook is making it easier for retailers to set up shop on the social network. And Shopify is helping clear the way. This week the e-commerce company said that it will give all of its 175,000 customers the ability to sell their products from a Shop section on their Facebook Pages in the coming weeks. Those sections, announced last week by Facebook, are meant to give businesses a simple digital storefront, optimized for mobile devices. The Shop sections are a major improvement from Facebook Store apps, Shopify said in a blog post:“Existing Facebook Store apps don’t work on mobile devices, which is how most people now use Facebook. As well, existing Facebook Store apps only add a tab to your page, while the new Facebook Shop section appears as a larger section on your main Facebook Page. Finally, the new Shop section includes a subscribe button that lets people get notified when you add new products.”Merchants can dir…

New Ad Blocker “Peace” Tops iTunes Paid Apps Chart Within Hours

For months, marketers have been worrying over the possibility that consumers might embrace ad blocking that’s made easier in iOS 9. Now iOS 9 is out, and within hours, a new ad blocker called “Peace” has become the most popular paid app.The Peace app created by Marco Arment, former CTO of Tumblr and Instapaper founder, sells for $2.99 in Apple’s app store.Within hours of the app going live, it topped the iTunes chart for paid apps for iPhone. Here it is as of 4:30am ET:It was also number two for paid apps for iPad:The app is technically a “content blocker,” because it blocks not only ads but other types of tracking codes and anything that is deemed worth blocking based on a list that Ghostery maintains.Ads are only blocked in Safari, not in other browsers like Chrome. And they are only blocked if a user also deliberately enables Peace to work with Safari. That’s pretty easy to do, and the Peace app provides interactive instructions and provides a way to test if everything is working c…
