Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Talks Mobile, Video & Offers Her Take On Ad Blocking At IAB MIXX

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer took center stage during yesterday’s IAB MIXX conference in NYC. Interviewed by The Slate Group chairman and editor in chief Jacob Weisberg, Mayer stayed on message, touting Yahoo’s capabilities as a mobile company and its focus to “inform, connect and entertain” its users.“Today, we really want to be the mobile guide,” said Mayer, claiming her company is still in the midst of a renaissance.Mayer offered a laundry list of Flurry stats, the mobile analytics company Yahoo acquired in July of last year, noting that 90 percent of the time spent on smart devices is spent in apps, with 50 percent of the time in apps split between messaging or entertainment apps. She also said, there are 280 million “mobile addicts” in the world – users who interact with apps more than six times a day.“Apps are really where the heat is,” said Mayer. She said Yahoo sees 600-million active mobile users a month. When it comes to mobile revenue, Mayer said she believes native ads are the …

Micromax, India’s Largest Smartphone Maker Might Enter the US Market in 2016

Micromax, India’s largest smartphone maker seems to have set its eyes on the US markets and in all probability will be making a foray starting next year. This move by Micromax is expected to swell its market share to a greater level thus enabling it to tackle Samsung globally. If Micromax is able to build up a success story in the US market, it can very well be the brand to look out for next year. While I personally felt that their was a dearth of low cost affordable Android handsets in the US market a couple of years ago, ironically the things didn’t change when Huawei and ZTE entered the US markets. In fact, Xiaomi seems to be treading cautiously and is deliberating the move to enter the US market fearing being sued up for lack of patents (the same reason why Xiaomi is preparing a warchest of patents and gearing up its R&D).The Information also revealed that Micromax was considering introducing the YU brand in the US but the company’s co-founders unanimously decided not to do so,…

Video Carousels & Brand Awareness Bidding Highlight A Slew Of Facebook Ad Additions

It’s Advertising Week in New York City and Facebook was prepared. The social giant has unleashed a handful of new advertising options hoping to woo advertisers and their pocketbooks. A slew of new features were announced that cover a wide gamut including mobile, general bidding and buying options.Video Carousel AdsFacebook’s carousel ads have been a favorite for advertisers looking to display more product or features and today video will also be an option for carousel ads. This new medium will also for advertisers to either show deeper dives on products or team up to show different messages. For example a Car manufacturer can display both national spots as well as local ads all in one ad unit.Brand Awareness OptimizationSometimes advertisers are looking for instant impact and direct response. Other times they are just looking for that top of mind branding presence. Facebook has created new ad bidding type for the latter called Brand Awareness Bidding. The goal of this is to allow mark…

Leveraging Content For In-Store Sales

It’s a little-known but impressive fact: Despite the rise and seeming ubiquity of e-commerce, a stunning 90 percent of consumer purchases are made in-store. That’s feet-on-the-street, brick-and-mortar, shopping cart, cash register, old-school type buying.Yet retailers and CPG (consumer packaged goods) brands still rely largely on print circulars to spur traffic and sales, despite off-the-cliff print media circulation. This week, I published research on the topic of how forward-looking retailers and brands can drive in-store traffic with digital media, most specifically with content marketing in digital channels. The full report, “From Web Traffic to Foot Traffic: How Brands and Retailers Can Leverage Digital Content to Power In-Store Sales,” is available here as a PDF download.Retailers and CPG brands aren’t having an easy time adapting digital marketing to their goals, particularly when it comes to creating seamless omni-channel customer experiences. We learned that only 60 percent of…

Rhei is a Weirdly Cool Electro-mechanical Clock with a Liquid Display

If you like gizmos, then I’m sure Rhei will have your attention. This is a really cool gadget that is described as an electro-mechanical clock with a liquid display. Which means that, as you can see from the video at the end, the time is literally flowing in this clock. This gadget is the result of a one-year long passion project, created by Damjan Stanković, executed in collaboration with Marko Pavlović and others. Here’s how the beautiful description of the device sounds like:“Never before has a liquid substance been unveiled in its pure, unrefined form and controlled in a manner which allows it to display tangible shapes. There is a middle ground between the analog and the digital sphere, where the rules of mechanics and the laws of nature come together in order to create a liquid illusion reminiscent of a contemporary, digital form.Time as a concept is highly subjective, but there are two things we can claim about it with certainty: time is unrelenting transience and continuous mov…

The Indian Summer of Vineet Taneja

Yes, you can now meet Vineet, but be ready with your questions. He is a very reserved person,” those were the words with which a Nokia executive briefed me as we went to meet Vineet Taneja. It was 2009 and Nokia had launched its first salvo at Apple with the N97. Vineet Taneja was the Director Marketing at Nokia, and was exhorting developers to come out with more apps for what was then known as the Symbian 60 (5th edition) platform. The interaction was a brief one, spanning about ten minutes. And as I had been warned, Vineet Taneja came across as a very reserved if utterly efficient person. Immaculately turned out in a blazer and a tie, he had sales figures and device features at his fingertips, and very little penchant for small talk. Any pause in the conversation would be punctuated by a stare that seemed to indicate that he had really expected the interviewer to prepare better. We saw him again a few weeks later at the formal launch of a phone and once again the impression was of t…

iOS Ad Blockers Begin Dropping In Popularity

Just short of two weeks since ad blockers skyrocketed to the top of the iPhone app chart, only one remains in the top five while a former number one has slipped to below 20th place.Within hours after iOS 9 came out on September 16, three ad blockers made it into the top 10 most popular paid apps with four in the top 12, for the US market. The Peace ad blocker even took the number one spot:Peace dropped from the charts about two days later, when its creator Marco Arment killed the app over concern that it didn’t allow for control to allow “well-behaved” ads through. The Crystal ad blocker quickly took over the number one spot, with Purify Blocker moving to fourth and Blockr at 20th.Crystal held its number one spot through at least last Thursday, when I did a check. Purify slipped a bit to fifth. On Monday (and through today), when I checked again, Crystal had plummeted to 21. Blockr wasn’t in the top 150, that I could spot:Purify did move up to number three, but this still means that i…

Yext Launches Xone Beacon Network For Offline-To-Online Retargeting

Yext, which has primarily been a business data and presence management company, has launched Xone, a new (free) in-store beacon program for enterprises with multiple locations and small businesses (SMBs). Among its very interesting potential use cases is the ability to retarget offline store visitors later on Facebook and Twitter — and eventually more ad networks and platforms. To refresh your recollection, beacons are small Bluetooth-powered pieces of hardware that have the capacity to transmit signals at short range to nearby smartphones (or tablets). Apple is promoting a beacon standard (iBeacon) and Google just released one itself (Eddystone). There are numerous hardware companies that make beacons, such as Gimbal and Estimote.Examples of beacons from various makersSource: LSA-Future of Privacy ForumUnderstanding of how beacons work or whether they “track” people is still quite hazy. For beacons to operate as intended two essential pre-conditions must exist:The user must have a rel…

11 Best Websites to Improve Writing Skills in English

We, humans are the most expressive creatures in the world, even the most introverted! We make use of both spoken and written words to convey our message across. The art of aptly describing what’s on your mind boils down to your writing or speaking abilities. While writing plain English is no challenge, eliminating the nuances from one’s writing to get the message across adequately is a challenge for many. While the best of the writers can capture the attention of readers with their succinct description of events, most of them struggle to find words or phrases to perfectly fall in place with the content.Writing aptly is a skill and it goes beyond the simple use of grammar in your prose. While grammar forms an essential aspect of writing, there are more aspects of writing which must be taken off while working on it. Overuse of cliches, adverbs, bulky phrases, etc is some of the examples of poor writing and something which needs to be addressed. Writing is a form of art and like every ot…
