First Impressions: iPhone 6s Plus – A Touch of the New… Literally

When it comes to design, Apple has been reasonably predictable when it comes to the ‘S’ versions of its iPhones – these generally have better innards but look very much like their unlettered predecessors. So you would have been hard pressed to spot the difference between the iPhone 4 and 4S or 5 and 5S by just looking at them, as the overall design and even the proportions were almost exactly similar. Well, that ethos has been carried forward to the iPhone 6s Plus as well – we kept it on a table full of geeks in India (where it will be released only on October 16) and no one noticed its existence. The reason? Well, it is a dead ringer for the iPhone 6 Plus – peas out of a pod so to say. Mind you, we do think that the reaction would have been different if we had kept the device in its packaging – for with the iPhone 6s Plus, Apple seems to have gone back to having a slightly more colourful box, instead of the plain white affair with the outline of a phone in the case of the 6 Plus.Gett…

Gionee Elife E8 Launching in India on October 8th

Gionee’s much awaited Elife E8 smartphone is all set to launch in India on October 8th in New Delhi. The camera centric phone with a stunning 23.7MP shooter on the rear was unveiled in China back in June this year, and is finally making its foray to other markets starting with India next week. The Elife E8 succeeds the Elife E7 which was a pretty big success considering top end specs and an extremely capable camera. The E7 was launched back in December 2013, so it’s very surprising as to why Gionee took nearly 2 years to release the next flagship smartphone. The Gionee Elife E8 sports a humongous 6-inch display with QHD (1,440 x 2,560) screen resolution. Inside the device sits a 64-bit capable MediaTek Helio X10 octa-core chipset clocked at 2GHz paired with 3GB RAM and 64 GB of internal storage which can be expanded to add another 128GB via microSD card should you need more storage. As with any phone in the E series the E8’s highlight will be its 23.7MP camera with real-time lossless zoo…

Snapchat Will Charge Brands To Make Their Mark On Your Silly Selfies

360b / Snapchat’s unique approach to social media advertising continues. Its latest wrinkle? “Sponsored lenses” that give brands the opportunity to insert themselves into people’s selfies on the ephemeral messaging network.Snapchat lenses launched two weeks ago and give Snapchatters the ability to overlay photos and videos with animated special effects, including crazy eyeballs and rainbow colored vomit. It’s the type of playful feature that Snapchat’s young, digitally native users are thought to love. What they don’t love is traditional advertising, so Snapchat continues to tinker with how to reach them with branded messages. The sponsored lenses, which will debut on Halloween, will be designed by Snapchat for marketers and sold to brands for $750,000 for one “on peak day” such as Halloween, Thanksgiving or Black Friday, according to the Financial Times, which first reported the news. Non-peak days will cost $450,000, according to the story. Hollywood studios are expec…

The Ad-Blocking Holiday Diet

These past few weeks, there has been much controversy and commentary on ad blocking, and a good majority think it’s unethical. It’s reasonable to expect that mass ad-blocking adoption will cause a slow, painful death for many small publishers, so the concerns are valid. On the other hand, some (myself included) think that everyone should stop complaining and focus on the next steps. The debate reached a new level with the release of Apple’s iOS 9, which supports mobile ad blocking — a stab at Google’s revenue model and an indirect blow to publishers.Regardless of which side you stand on, it’s pretty clear that the debate nods towards a broken system: one that could care less about the consumer experience and allows for annoying, poorly created ads to litter screens everywhere. If all ads were highly valuable and relevant, we wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place. It’s interesting timing for this debate to be heating up, as we’re about to dive into the holidays. According to IAB’s 2…

Taking shopping ads on YouTube a step further, Google has announced Shopping ads for YouTube will appear on other videos, not just those of the retailer or brand advertising. This folows on  TrueView for Shopping ads, launched in May, which enables brands and retailers to run ads cards featuring products on their own videos. Shopping ads for YouTube will appear on other product-focused videos on the site, such as unboxings (those popular videos of people opening products — last holiday season, Google said unboxing videos had had 57 percent more views in 2014 than the previous year), hauls (videos in which people show off and talk about recent purchases), product reviews and how-tos.How The Ads WorkAs with TrueView Shopping ads and other TrueView Cards, users will see the “i” icon at the top right of a video. Clicking on the icon brings up the Shopping ads overlaid on the video.Just like product listing ads in sear…
