The New Customer Journey: Think Local, Act Mobile – October 15 Webcast

For national brands targeting consumers at the local level, things have certainly changed. Consumers no longer move down a straight ‘buying path’; rather, they zig-zag across channels, between devices and locations. The good news is that advertisers can now combine location, search, and behavior targeting to deliver mobile ads to consumers on-the-go.In this webcast from our sister-site Digital Marketing Depot, Warren Zenna of Mobtext, Luke Edson of YP, and Karen Burka of Third Door Media will discuss just how much today’s consumer journey has changed and what tactics national advertisers can take to capture consumers at local level. You’ll learn the latest trends in mobile and consumer buying patterns; how to use location-based advertising most effectively; and how to combine location, search, and behavioral targeting.Register now at Digital Marketing Depot.

A Proposed Protocol For Ethical Ad Blocking

In 1994, the Robot Exclusion Protocol was established as a voluntary system for webmasters to control which robots could access which pages of a website. In a nutshell, under the system, robots such as Googlebot announce themselves to Web servers and download a file, robots.txt, that says which pages are allowed and not allowed to be crawled. When there have been disputes between search engines and publishers, the search engines can point to this protocol and say that publishers are free to block crawling, indexing and caching of their Web pages. This voluntary system has largely worked.A similar voluntary protocol for ad blocking should be established. It would be far better for publishers and tech companies to come up with an agreement about the nuances of ad blocking, rather than pummel each other in court. Moreover, by establishing industry standards, rogue operators who disregard the norms can be excluded, leading to a better experience for users and more profit for publishers. To d…

Ethical Mantra “Don’t Be Evil” Becomes “Do The Right Thing” For New Google Parent

The Wall Street Journal points out that Google’s corporate parent, Alphabet, has a new code of conduct and a new ethical slogan: “do the right thing.” The code states in its preface, “Employees of Alphabet and its subsidiaries and controlled affiliates (‘Alphabet’) should do the right thing – follow the law, act honorably, and treat each other with respect.”Famously, Google launched with the philosophy “don’t be evil,” which is formulated on its site as “you can make money without doing evil” (or perhaps the former is a popular paraphrase of the latter). While carrying the best intentions, this tagline has subjected Google to repeated, sarcastic rejoinders and satire over the years as critics used it to bludgeon the company when it seemingly transgressed the “evil” boundary (or crossed the “creepy line”).If I were a professional ethicist or philosophy professor we could digress into a lengthy discussion about the differences in meaning and tone between the two directives. It’s also in…

Busting the ‘iPhone Made Smartphones Expensive’ Myth!

Get ready to sell your kidneys” the call goes out as Apple releases a new iPhone. While that might sound a trifle extreme to some, the fact is that for a signficant segment of the tech using population, the iPhone is synonymous with expensive extravagance. In fact, there are many who hold Apple responsible for the emergence of the premium priced handset.Well, there’s no denying that the iPhone inevitably gets released at a price tag that would be more at home on a mid-segment notebook than a high-end handset. However, what not too many people seem to realise that the iPhone, while hardly being inexpensive, is not the sole device out there with a high price tag. The high-end price segment of the phone market has always existed and believe it or not, has always been more than able to give notebooks a run for their money in terms of pricing. If that sounds a bit far-fetched, cast your mind back to 2007 and the first iPhone, which was released at a price of USD 499 for a 4 GB version and …
