How Machine Learning Works, As Explained By Google

The recent revelation that Google is using machine learning to help process some of its search results is attracting interest and questions about this field within artificial intelligence. What exactly is “machine learning” and how do machines teach themselves? Here’s some background drawn from those involved with machine learning at Google itself.Yesterday, Google held a “Machine Learning 101” event for a variety of technology journalists. I was one of those in attendance. Despite the billing as an introduction, what was covered still was fairly technical and hard to digest for me and several others in attendance. For example, when a speaker tells you the math with machine learning is “easy” and mentions calculus in the same sentence, they have a far different definition of easy than the layperson, I’d say!Still, I came away with a much better understanding of the process and parts involved with how machines — computers — learn to teach themselves to recognize objects, text, spoken wo…

Startup CabinetM Unveils Its Directory of Marketing Tools

When it comes to digital tools, marketers have an overabundance of several thousand choices. To help navigate these possibilities, Boston-based CabinetM is today announcing its first product, a new platform of the same name. The platform, still in beta, offers written profiles on about 3500 tools in more than 450 categories, including “Advertising: Buying, Serving and Management” and “Content Marketing.” A search tool allows filtering by several parameters, such as install time or install complexity.Co-founder and CEO Anita Brearton told me that, when she was running an ecommerce company called Fashion Plate, her marketing team realized “it wasn’t easy finding tools.” Marketers, she said, need a better way to find tools and technology, while tools vendors need better exposure to their potential buyers. Co-founder Sheryl Schultz is also a former marketer.Sometime next year, she said, the site will allow vendors to take over the profiles at a cost ranging from $500 to $1000 monthly, and t…

Use This Stupid-Simple Secret Ingredient to Boost Social Engagement

Every day, for hours on end, social media teams across the country — around the world, even — toil away in poorly lit rooms, snacking periodically on stale donuts and swilling hours-old cold coffee, trying to come up with new ways to solve one huge, gaping problem plaguing marketers of all stripes:No one cares about our social content enough to give it a like, a retweet, a comment, or even a share. All is not lost. I’ve stumbled upon a stupid-simple way to dramatically increase your social engagement, and it’s actually a lot of fun. Ready for it? It’s emojis! An Emoji Is Worth A Thousand WordsEmojis are super-powerful because they allow us to communicate so much more than we could with words alone. People are apt to respond positively to your messages when you form an emotional connection, however brief. That’s a fist-bump emoji, in case it’s not clear. WhatsApp for Android Updated with Starred Messages to Allow Users to Quickly Access Bookmarked Messages

WhatsApp has recently released a very useful feature for iPhone users, called Starred Messages. This enables users to quickly access bookmarked messages including images, videos, or other content. And now it seems that this feature is available to Android users, as well, but it hasn’t made its way on Google Play.In order to get this feature on your Android smartphone, you will have to download the latest version of WhatsApp (v2.12.339) for Android from the official website. The new feature is yet to make its way to the app available on Google Play but we can expect the company to rollout the latest update to Google Play in the near future. The new Starred Messages bookmarking feature can be used by tapping and holding a message which would then be saved in a separate new Starred Messages tab. Thus, once a message has been starred, you will be able to see the star icon next to the message. The new star icon will appear in the app’s toolbar, next to the delete and copy icons. If you want…

Millennial Marketing: Getting Their Attention Through Intent

Traditional logic behind providing content free of monetary cost is that viewers pay by giving their attention to a brand’s advertisement. It’s a fair exchange: Instead of giving money for quality content, you give a bit of your attention to a brand message.Millennials, however, are becoming both burned out and bored with digital ads altogether. It has gotten to the point where paying to get an ad in front of them isn’t effective.A ComScore study found that, compared with Baby Boomers and Seniors, Millennials tend to be “less interested and more difficult to connect with, capture attention, impress, convince and entertain.”So how do we break through? Establish a thorough pattern of intent. What Millennials Don’t WantTwo main factors contribute to Millennials’ resistance to the traditional exchange of content for attention. The first is one that everyone has been talking about: disruptive ads, or ads that are intrusive and distract the consumer from the content experience. The ads not on…

Engaging And Retaining Mobile Users: Why Data And Machine Learning Are Your Best Friends

“Only the data-driven will survive.” That’s my new mantra for marketers. As marketers, we know the keys to our continued success lie with data. However, our challenge is in moving beyond the vague platitudes designed to appease the corporate masses and toward an in-depth knowledge of customers that can inform decisions accurately and at scale.Everyone is looking to marketers to show them the way — to lead with data — but we’ve still got a way to go before we can achieve that.We all know there are mountains of data out there just waiting to be mined, but it’s those same masses of data that are contributing to the challenges facing today’s marketing leaders. To succeed, we must know not only where to start, but how to intelligently make sense of that data to push toward our business goals.Do You Know Your Users? As the CMO of Localytics, I recently surveyed companies for whom mobile was a critical part of their business. (As you can imagine, in the app marketing business, we run into a lo…

Microsoft to Release Windows 10 Mobile on November 12

November 12th is the day on which Microsoft will be releasing the fall update for the Windows 10 PC, also called as Threshold 2 but it sure does has some other surprises in its kitty as well. Windows 10 Mobile will be released on the same day and the update dubbed “Fall refresh” will seed for both Windows 10 PC and Windows Mobile. Both the builds are said to be stable and successfully address the bugs from the previous builds. The obvious question that follows is when Windows 10 Mobile will start seeding for all the devices. The answer to this question is twofold, first things first, even if Microsoft is ready with the updates right away it will still depend on the carriers as they supposedly require generous amount of time for testing purposes and the updates will seed region wise thus delaying the process further. As of now, Lumia devices like Lumia 540, 434, 640, 640 XL are expecting the Windows 10 Mobile update shortly.Windows Insiders on the other hand will be treated to another u…
