First Things First: Get Your Mobile Tracking Right.

Saying “no” to a client who wants to spend more money in your channel isn’t usually a digital marketer’s first instinct, but it’s a whole lot better than letting your client spend money without knowing the outcome. And that’s a problem mobile advertisers are still facing all too often, thanks to improper tracking and attribution. At 3Q (my employer), we refuse to let anything go out the door with our clients’ name on it that doesn’t have proper attribution and tracking in place. You can’t recover data that’s never captured — if it’s not attributed, logged, and then analyzed, it’s as though it never happened.Installing mobile attribution tracking for your app, site or mobile product isn’t hard. But in the priority order of your dev team’s sprint cycles, where does it fall? Last? Second to last?We get it: It’s the nuts and bolts of advertising. It’s not building the next great product. But if you don’t capture all the data you can, you might never even know whether that product you built

Why Programmatic Advertising Fraud Exists

In my last column, we covered what fraud is, the magnitude of the problem, and the many ways in which it takes shape. We are now going to discuss one of the biggest questions that arise around the topic of ad fraud: Why does it exist in the first place? As with most big problems, a combination of factors contributes to an environment that makes the problem possible and persistent. In the case of ad fraud, it’s a big problem for a number of reasons: the open nature of the programmatic advertising marketplace, the fact that ad fraud is technically not illegal, and lastly, misaligned incentives across the entire supply chain, leading to inertia and passive treatment of the problem. The Downside Of Open MarketplacesThe programmatic advertising ecosystem is based on being open. This means that any advertiser or publisher should be free to participate in the marketplace. It’s an extremely democratizing concept, but it also creates an opportunity for bad actors to join the party and pollute it w…

Are Ad Blockers Killing The Digital Economy? Views From Web Summit

“Change has never happened this fast before, and it will never be this slow again” wrote marketer Graeme Wood for the Institute of Practioners in Advertising (IPA) Social project, and nowhere has this statement rung truer than in the debate surrounding ad blockers. The internet has given advertisers an unprecedented number of options for how and where they’re able to deliver ads, and it’s enabled pinpoint accuracy for targeting and measurement that is simply unavailable on other media. However, just as the internet has offered almost endless possibilities and ad revenues to match, it also offers users the power of revolt and, in recent times, revolt they have. The 2015 Ad Blocking Report from PageFair and Adobe details just how pervasive ad blocking technology has become, with publishers losing an estimated $22 billion this year and ad blocker adoption rising globally by 41 percent. (Note: PageFair makes anti-ad-blocker solutions for publishers.)Clearly, ad blocking technology is here to…

KPI Frameworks: Bringing Order To KPI Chaos To Prioritize E-Commerce Optimization Efforts

By now, it’s cliché, but true: analysts are drowning in data when it comes to e-commerce.On the one hand, it’s great to work in an industry where there’s so much data which you can potentially put to valuable use. On the other hand, until you’re able to consistently sift through it and find the most actionable bits, all your data represents is potential.Having so much data at your fingertips can actually prevent you from focusing on your true KPIs — the ones that are, quite literally, indicative of business performance. For example: should e-commerce organizations be focused on optimizing against overall revenue? Average order value? Number of transactions from first-time buyers? Purchase frequency of repeat buyers? Some combination of the above? All of the above? These are difficult questions for businesses to answer, in large part because different people within an organization are likely to have conflicting priorities. Ask your customer acquisition manager what the most important KPI…

Mintigo Moves From Predicting Prospects To Reeling Them In

Mintigo is today announcing a new B2B product that uses the customer intelligence from its predictive lead scoring to drive marketing campaigns.Called Predictive Campaigns and available for now in an invitation-only beta, the new offering employs predictive modeling to automatically select what Mintigo considers the next best message, offer, channel and timing for turning a prospect into a customer. It then commands an integrated marketing automation platform to issue the response. It goes beyond the firm’s previous practice, which used a variety of data clues to determine which of a client company’s existing leads, or new contacts, were most likely to become customers or to buy related products. That intelligence was then implemented by the client company on its marketing tools.“Now,” chief product officer Atul Kumar told me, Mintigo is directly instructing the marketing automation platform as to “the next best action” for reeling in that prospect. Alternatively, the marketer can quer…

Sanity Returns? Flipkart Backtracks on App only Strategy; Brings Back the Mobile Website

Flipkart had piloted an App only strategy a few months back, and had even started making few categories exclusive to the mobile app. This move was deemed by many (including us) as a desperate measure to forcefully push the customers to mobile apps. This app only approach was severely ridiculed and Flipkart now seems to have backtracked their steps and has offered a light version of the website on phones. The webapp is pretty different from both the mobile app and the desktop site when it comes to the UI, and looks to be completely redesigned. Nevertheless, the mobile website seems to be slick and doesn’t need buyers to install the mobile app anymore. Myntra is yet another etailer who made the shift to an app only medium and it seems that Flipkart was more of testing the waters, and it’s now evident that the entire exercise somehow didn’t go well. The app only strategy had to backfire since unlike other hyperlocal delivery services and cab hailing apps, Flipkart doesn’t make extensive us…

Surprise! Apple is Already Offering Cashback and Discounts on iPhone 6s and 6s Plus in India

This festive season of Diwali, the celebrations will not be just limited to sweets, diyas and food, as Apple for the first time has come up with some great offers to encourage buyers to go for the new (overpriced) iPhone. In fact, this seems to be a sort of desperate attempt by the Cupertino folks to spike up the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus sales, considering the fact that there has never been such “huge” discounts and cashbacks on the latest iPhone. If you want to trade in your old phone for the new iPhones than you are in for luck as Apple has introduced a new buyback scheme which will offer discounts up to Rs 34,000, bringing down the upfront price of the device down drastically. The buyback scheme is available across all major Apple retailers including Reliance digital and Ezone. Reliance Digital sweetens the deal further by offering an extra Rs 2000 cashback and accessory coupons worth Rs 2000. The other retailers have tied up with select banks and offering a 10% cashback (li…

Why Android One Flight Failed to Take Off?

Android One was an ambitious project by Google. The company intended to bring sub $100 smartphones with specifications that would provide decent performance and fast over-the-air updates to the latest version of Android directly from Google.Android One targeted emerging countries and had made its debut in India. The idea was to team up with local manufacturers and create devices. The project initially received a good response from local manufacturers but then for the second generation, only Lava came to support Google in India. There are reports that Android One is now being watered down giving OEMs the ability to use any components as they wish rather than the ones Google specifies, and also changes have been made to Google’s update policy. In an update to Google’s update support page earlier this year the software situation changed. It readsAndroid One phones receive the latest version of Android from Google’s hardware partners. Google’s partners send updates based on their schedule …

Xiaomi Mi Band 1S Raises the Bar with an Optical Heart Rate Monitoring Sensor for Just $16

Xiaomi has recently officiated its Mi Band 1S which will succeed the Mi Band as a low cost fitness tracker. Apart from the usual run of the mill features you would find in an entry level fitness tracker, Mi Band 1S also comes with a heart rate sensor, elevating it to the league of other premium trackers like Jawbone and Fitbit. The heart rate monitor is based on optical heart monitoring technology which tracks the blood by illuminating the capillaries with LED. So the heart rate monitor will be available for the buyers as an accessory and can be added to the Mi Band package for a little extra. The Mi Band has already started selling in China this year priced at $15 and the Band 1S will be made available from the mid of this month, surprisingly the price has not been greatley disturbed and it will still retail at $16. The availability of the Mi Band 1S in the non-Chinese market is still unclear and so is the price at which it will retail outside China.

On the design front, the Mi Band 1S …

Intermediary Liability In Duffy Case Could Turn Google, Facebook Into Content Police

Janice Duffy has been vindicated by the Supreme Court of South Australia in her case against Google. While that’s good for Dr. Duffy, the case sets a problematic precedent that could impair online speech and create broad liability for “secondary publishers” such as Google, Facebook and others.Roughly six years ago Duffy was embroiled in a reputation flame war on Ripoff Report. Without going into the underlying statements, Duffy claimed she had been defamed and her reputation injured by her opponents on Ripoff Report. She asked Google to remove the allegedly defamatory content from search results for her name. Google declined and she wound up suing the company, which disputed liability and fought the litigation in Australia, where Duffy resides.Upon the filing of the litigation in 2011 Google did remove the disputed content from its search results. But, apparently, auto-complete suggestions still showed some of the defamatory content in response to queries on Duffy’s name. Two weeks ago …
