E-Commerce Activity Climbing, While Electronics Top Non-Branded Search Terms

The online shopping season is beginning to heat up, according to aggregated data from retail ad network HookLogic, which works with sites like Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Macy’s. Marketing Land is providing weekly updates on e-commerce activity throughout the holiday season in this Online Retail Sales Report.Total views to product pages last week, from Monday, November 9, through Sunday, November 15, grew to an indexed value of 133 — compared to the benchmark of 100 in October and 107 last week. Meanwhile, shoppers are also converting in greater numbers. The average measured conversion rate of 155 shows a significant increase over the benchmarked period, and even a big rise from last week, when it was just 112.The network’s top non-branded keywords for on-site searches also indicate a gift-giving and general holiday mindset, as “TV” tops the list, followed by “laptop,” “Christmas trees” and “tablets.” “Boots,” which topped the list last week, was still a query attracting significant…

Bitly Launches Tool For Channelizing Its Short Links

Bitly, which makes its living by turning long links into short ones, is today adding channelization.Called Bitly Campaigns, the new product allows marketers to create and designate groups of links for a given channel, and then compare the campaign performance of paid, earned and owned channels in a dashboard.A channel can be network like Facebook or Twitter, or it can be a SMS text, a web page, a push notification, an email, an app (Bitly supports deep-linking to a screen within a destination app) or even all the marketing conducted by a single agency.Director of product management Dan Touchette told me that, up to now, marketers have been channel-tracking the Bitly links in such ad hoc tools as massive Excel spreadsheets. Before this new Campaigns, Touchette said, his company could provide some channel tracking, but it was based on getting “refer” data from the location’s source. Such data, for instance, tells the marketer how many visits to a destination like a site came from a given…

Most Social Media Management Tools Still Lack “Emergency Stop” Button For Times Of Tragedy

Bloomua / Shutterstock.com As the tragic events in Paris unfolded last week, many on social media askedand even begged — brands to stop their normal postings. But as it turns out, most social media management tools still don’t have a simple “emergency stop” button. That makes it difficult for companies running sizable social operations to hit the brakes on social when major news breaks. Some platforms require you to pull up individual posts and either delete or reschedule them, a terribly slow and inefficient prospect. The issue is definitely attracting the attention of the management firms. During the aftermath of Friday’s attack, Buffer tweeted instructions about how to stop scheduled post from going out. And later the company sent out a number replies that it is looking into ways to simplify the process.@markshaw Really wish we could pause it for everyone, Mark! Working to see what we can do now -Daniel— Buffer (@buffer) November 13, 2015 @jadoogan Hi Jesse – to pause sending from e…

5 Days. 5 Small Marketing Wins. 5 Minutes Each.

I gotta admit: Keeping up with marketing news kind of depresses me.If you’re like me, you subscribe to growth-hacking newsletters, follow thought leaders on Twitter and read marketing forums regularly. And you’ve probably become accustomed to, and a little depressed by, marketing experts sharing their success and how easily “you can do it too!”I’ve been duped too many times by headlines like: “We grew our newsletter subscribers 1,000 percent by using this simple tip.” I can’t resist these headlines.I click. I skim. And either the article is misleading or this “simple tip” is just the “tip” of a much larger marketing iceberg — an iceberg that’s going to require buying something, signing up or doing a bunch of legwork first. I don’t have the time for it.So in response to those articles, I wanted to write a column you can feel good about. If you’re already doing these five things, pat yourself on the back. You’re not done, though. Do these again, but this time, do them a little better tha…

Planning cycles everywhere, in and out of marketing, are in the midst of a sea change. The problem is that marketers have to be able to course-correct their strategies with increasing speed and agility as environments become less predictable. But budget cycles and consensus-building processes still remain on an annual cycle for the most part.A Growing Gap: Forecasts, Budgets And RealitiesBy the end of 2017, Gartner predicts, most organizations will have shifted from conducting market analyses on an annual or quarterly basis to a daily basis. Things are changing so quickly, any sense of sustainable competitive advantage will have vanished.A lack of predictability in audience behavior, economic conditions…

The Product Search Battle: Has Google Shopping Been More Successful Against Amazon Than Google Lets On?

As the holiday shopping season heats up, the ongoing competition between Google and Amazon to be the destination for consumes researching products reaches its annual apex. Conventional wisdom holds that Amazon dominates in this realm. Recent data, however, suggests Google may be gaining ground or at least is not as far behind as Google has intimated.Product search is worth billions, and the overhaul of Google Shopping into a paid platform in 2012 was designed to combat losses to Amazon. In that year, a 2012 Forrester survey found that 30 percent of searches started on Amazon and 9 percent originated on Google. The study concluded, “in recent years, [Amazon] appears to have taken market share from search engines like Google, the dominant incumbent in shopping research.”Finding out just how well Google Shopping is performing in product search compared to Amazon is hard. Google doesn’t report on that portion of the business separately and various reporting outlets source data differently…

Why Digital Marketing Should Join The Sharing Economy

Back in 2008, potential investors thought the idea of renting airbeds and rooms to strangers was a crazy idea. But today, Airbnb is upending the hospitality industry, serving an average of 425,00 guests per night — more than many global hotel brands — with expectations of generating $900 million in revenue this year. The fast-growing sharing economy is disrupting industries from ride sharing to finance to music streaming. This has been good for consumers, who are reaping the benefits of low prices and convenient new options: They can now stay in a British castle for the price of a hotel room. They don’t have to stand in line for a taxi. They’re “monetizing” their kids’ former bedrooms and empty guestrooms. At its core, the sharing economy is about fostering collaboration to turn underutilized resources into new revenue streams. This quest for increased efficiency appeals well beyond the consumer marketplace as businesses seek to optimize assets by fostering B2B exchanges for vehicles, pa…

5 End-to-end Encrypted Messenger Apps That You Should Use

Over the past couple of years, specially after Edward Snowden revelations, people have started to take privacy and security a little more seriously. Since then, several popular instant messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Apple’s iMessage and more recently Line have endorsed End-to-end encryption in order to ensure that any communication through the app is transmitted safely without being interrupted by unauthorized agencies or people.According to wikipedia–End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is a digital communications system that facilitates two or more parties, known as communication endpoints, to communicate securely through an untrusted third-party, such as telecommunications service providers, Internet providers, or application service providers.Unfortunately, not all encrypted apps are secure at same level. For example, WhatsApp enabled E2EE for their Android users first, while users on other platforms like iOS, Windows Phone etc are still waiting. Arthur Baxter, a Network Operatio…

Chromebit by Google and Asus will Bring ChromeOS to Your TV at Just $85

Google and Asus had revealed the Chromebit, a new Chrome OS computer built in to a stick way back in March this year and now it seems that the production plan has been finally materialized. The Chromebit will be available at $85 and the stick essentially packs up an entire computer with a Rockchip ARM processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. On the connectivity front, the stick boasts of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. The Chromebit can be directly plugged into the HDMI port of your tv or monitor, and you are good to go.The Chromebit also comes with a single USB port to which you can plug in your peripherals. The single port however gives rise to a caveat – you won’t be able to connect a mouse and a keyboard together at the same time until and unless you buy an additional USB Hub. Chromebit is indeed a cheap way to make your spare monitor or old TV screens work for you as a full-fledged computer with the Chrome OS. The last time I had tested Windows stick computer, the speeds weren…

First Impressions: Qiku Q Terra: The Big Phone That Looks Smart!

When you utter the words “6.0-inch display” your mind inevitably conjures up the image of a less-than-legitimate offspring of a phone and tablet that is designed to stretch your hands and pockets. And as we have written before, while we do see the benefits of a large screen device, there is a point beyond which they start becoming more of a physical hindrance than digital assets. So when Chinese phone manufacturer Qiku told us that they would be bring the 6.0-inch display laden Q Terra phone to the Indian market, our first thoughts were to head to a holy place and make an offering on behalf of our poor hands. I mean, we think the iPhone 6s Plus and the Nexus 6P are big and they have smaller displays (5.5 and 5.7 inch respectively). So you can imagine our surprise when we clapped eyes for the first time on the Qiku Q Terra. No, we will not call it a small phone, for it isn’t one. But it definitely does not look like a phone with a 6.0-inch display either. For at 157.6 mm in length, it i…

Music Streaming Service Rdio Shuts its Shop, Pandora Buys the Assets in a $75 Million Cash Deal

Pandora has bought the distraught music streaming service Rdio. Both the sides have confirmed in a blog post that acquisition has taken place and the deal includes pumping in $75 million in cash, which seems to be earmarked for the purpose of bringing life to Rdio. Pandora seems to have acquired the key assets from Rdio just as the music streaming service filed for bankruptcy.Rdio has confirmed in the blog post that it will be shutting the shops in coming weeks, till which the services will be uninterrupted. This is not the first time the Digital Music economy had to face the wrath of sketchy economics along with the issue of loyalties to the music labels. The chances are that someone other than Pandora might just come and buy the Rdio. The company said in a statement “While we are filing for bankruptcy, because the planned sale to Pandora is contingent on such a filing, by law Rdio is required to entertain competitive offers during the bankruptcy process that is being managed for us b…
