On The Hunt For Black Friday Shoppers? Pinterest Says It’s Got Them

So where are all the Black Friday shoppers hanging out online?Over here, Pinterest says, releasing new stats today to support its claim that Pinterest is best place to reach people in a holiday buying mood.Pinterest users shop more on Black Friday than the average online user, according to a study done for Pinterest by marketing researcher CivicScience. Pinners spend four times more on toys and games, three times more on house ware, clothing and accessories and 2.2 times more on electronics and media. Furthermore, CivicScience found, Pinners are 50 percent more likely than the average online person to spend the most on Black Friday at specialty stores and local businesses. Those findings fit nicely as a pitch to advertisers and brands to increase their focus on Pinterest this time of year. And it’s a familiar message; in September, the company released stats showing that Pinners start their holiday shopping before the average Jane or Joe.Pinterest also shared a few more holiday shoppin…

The 4 Worst Lies Other Marketers Tell

While the best customer relationships are based on authenticity and trust, there are countless examples of companies making a ton of money through bold-faced lies. I’m not talking about mere exaggeration in advertisements (like a sugar-filled cereal somehow claiming it is part of a balanced diet for your kids). I’m talking about deliberate attempts to deceive customers. These tactics are risky, but the odd and unfortunate upshot is that they do in many cases end up driving revenue. For the record, I’m not recommending these tactics, so don’t shoot the messenger.Lie #1: Win (Or Create) A Fake AwardPeople care about awards. When a movie wins an Oscar, it drives tons of additional revenue for that film. Being named as a “best place to work” increases job applications. And of course, awards can be used in sales and PR to win more business. But not all awards are created equal. The most prestigious awards are judged by distinguished panels who have no financial incentives. Others, um, not so…

Pepsi’s First smartphone P1s Launched, is it all About Branding and Consumerism?

Smartphone industry has been bustling with new entrants every day and this time around it’s the beverage giant Pepsi who has come up with its own phone, called the Pepsi P1s. The mid-range phone will be sold at an affordable price tag of $110 to $175 and as an option will come clad in blue color and a Pepsi logo.At the outset this seems to be a marketing gimmick by Pepsi to enter the smartphone race and at the same time also leverage their brand presence to move up the ladder rather quickly. The Pepsi P1s has been launched in China and it comes fitted with a 5.5-inch 2.5D curved glass display and under the hood lies an Octa-core MediaTek MT6592 processor coupled with a 2GB RAM and runs dido OS wrapped within which is the Android Lollipop 5.1. The exterior of the phone shapes up as a unibody aluminium housing along with a rear fingerprint sensor. On the imaging front, the Pepsi P1s sports a 13-Megapixel primary sensor and a 5-Megapixel secondary sensor.Pepsi P1s features connectivity fe…

Using Pinterest For Keyword Research

One of the foundations of good SEO is making sure your site content is relevant to what you offer and that this content is optimized to use the same language commonly used by consumers. For example, most outfitters would be advised to develop content and optimize around their stock of cowboy boots rather than referring to their items as western boots or roper boots. The table above, pulled from the Google AdWords Keyword Planner, gives us the cold, statistical justification behind this decision — we want to talk about our cowboy boots because 10x more people think of what we offer in those terms. But as Google’s organic ranking formula has become more complex, the limitations of Keyword Planner are beginning to show.[Read the full article on Search Engine Land.]

Maximize The Event Experience: Engage Socially In The Moment

Our job as marketers is to identify (or create) moments that matter to consumers for the brands we represent — and to generate conversations around those moments. In our multi-screen world, leveraging live events in real time on social media can be a powerful way to kick-start conversations and engage consumers online. That said, how can you maximize your brand’s marketing punch and keep attendees tuned in socially? You can encourage meaningful social engagement during event launches based on thorough research into existing conversations. That’s a robust strategy that takes the dialogue to the next level. When we develop social media plans for our clients’ event activations as title sponsors, or when we leverage an existing event (think Monday Night Football or an annual awards show), we use the following framework.Step 1: Listen And EvaluateCapturing consumer focus and cultivating conversations in real time, during events, requires knowing a lot about who those consumers are, what they …

With more than a month left to go in 2015, video metrics firm Unruly says Android’s “Friends Furever” ranks as the No. 1 most shared ad of the year with a total of 6,432,997 shares across Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and the blogosphere.Android not only made it to the top of this year’s list, its ad also surpassed last year’s “La La La” video by Shakira – an ad made in partnership with Danone Activa in support of the World Food Programme – for the most shared ad of all time.Pets and furry animals were a big hit this year with five of the top 20 videos featuring animals.“Data analysis of 1,300 ads proves that 2015 was a highly emotional year for video ads,” says Unruly co-CEO Sarah Wood, “Warmth and happiness shone through, with brands using fluffy pets and simple storylines to melt our hearts and amplify sharing.”Ads like “Love Has No Labels” from the Ad Council and Microsoft’s video featuring Robert Downey Jr. delivering a bionic arm to a young boy pulled on viewer’s heartstrings, hel…

Mobile, Millennials And Marketing: An Insider’s View

Last week, I had the luxury of sitting in on a panel hosted by the Advertising Research Foundation titled, “Millennials Unplugged: What Are We Learning From Millennials?” The panel was moderated by my colleague, Bob Pearson, and featured panelists Natalie Malaszenko, SVP of Marketing at Overstock.com, and Maureen Craig, founder of MoStrategy. The focus, as you can imagine, was on what we can (and should) learn from what is now the largest demographic in the United States: the Millennials. The panel was not only informative, but reminded me of an ongoing blog series that Pearson works on with his daughter, Brittany, titled, “Millennials Unplugged.” The series focuses on Pearson and Brittany (along with other guest W2O Group employee contributors) picking topics relevant to companies, like culture and social media, and then providing a “Millennial” viewpoint. In my mind, this is something that can’t be discussed enough, as I still believe that most companies are inclined to hang onto the …

Should You Pay $1000 for an iPhone? Heck Yes, if YOU think it’s Worth it!

“You can get whatever you have on the iPhone from another device that costs a fraction of its price” has been an argument that makes the rounds every time an iPhone is announced. And this time is no different, with many claiming even a basic Android device can deliver pretty much everything that an iPhone 6s can. They are right. And wrong. For it is not about Android and iOS, but about economics and that elusive, non-definable bird – perceived value.“What’s so special about it?”That has been the call that goes out pretty much every year a new iPhone is released in the Indian market at a premium price. This year has been no different. With the iPhone 6s starting at Rs 62,000 and the iPhone 6s Plus at Rs 10,000 more, there has been a storm of outrage that almost borders on the moral from a number of people, ranging from mainstream users to tech experts and pundits. This has been inevitably been accompanied by mathematical equations showing how many very good Android devices one could buy…

What CMOs Should Know About Ad Blockers: From What They Are To What’s At Stake

Want to Fly a Drone as Hobby? Rejoice, as FAA Doesn’t Require you to Register

The rules and regulations regarding drone flying was always murky and the regulations had failed to clearly outline the laws in order to allow the Drone hobbyists to pursue their passion in peace. We had been hearing news about drone flyers being arrested, while some of them were legit cases, while others were just ridiculous. The authorities failed to undermine the fact that just like the other toys, the possibility of drones getting involved in a mishap is likely but arresting all of them made little sense. Now it seems that Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has come up with a set of guidelines it announced via social media and it guarantees that if drone pilots follow the rules in the United States, they will never find themselves in trouble. This will come across as a huge sigh of relief for the drone hobbyists who will now at least have access to a clearly chalked out regulations they can abide. This set of regulations is expected to prod the other countries to set up their own…

Oppo Project Spectrum Offers a “Near Stock” Android Experience for Find 7 and 7a

Oppo has unveiled its first beta version of the near stock Android ROM for the Find 7 and the Find 7a, which will be based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. The project has been codenamed “Project Spectrum” and the ROM will be devoid of Oppo’s ColorOS, thus resembling a Vanilla/Stock Android, just like the Nexus. Oppo has however included some features in the initial version of the ROM which will be added to the stock OS.The ROM will support screen gestures which will include a “tap to wake” and draw a circle to “open the camera.” These features will be turned off by default and in order to use it one needs to toggle to the Settings>Accessibility>Screen-off gestures. Color OS Camera will support certain camera plugins including Beautify, Filters, HDR, GIF, Double exposure and Expert Mode, the caveat however remains that you can delete a photo only by opening the Google photos app.The company’s MaxxAudio will also be supported and turned on by default. Apart from the aforementioned feat…

Marketing Platform Act-On Unveils Packaged, Industry-Specific Solutions

A hotel chain uses a marketing automation system in ways similar to others in its industry, but differently from, say, a hospital. With that in mind, marketing automation platform Act-On is today launching a set of packaged vertical solutions for five industries — healthcare, travel, finance, manufacturing and retail. The company said other industries, such as education and energy, are in the works. These Industry Solutions — which are packaged versions of industry-customized one-offs that Act-On has previously prepared for some clients — provide pre-built content, programs and benchmarks.“This is meat-and-potatoes stuff,” Act-On chief marketing officer Atri Chatterjee told me, adding that it addresses the kinds of things marketers need every day.The content includes templates for emails, forms and landing pages, along with campaign examples. Chatterjee said that, for a travel industry company, this prepared-but-customizable content could include seasonal promotions, loyalty offers or f…

Google will now let Android Users “Stream” Apps from Search Results Without Actually Installing Them

Google has been including app information in its search results from quite a while but to access the content, one needed to install the app. Now all that is set to change since Google has introduced a new way to stream the full-fledged app to your phone via cloud. The Mountain View company announced today that it’s en-route testing a feature which will stream the apps to Android phones. In case you are searching for a hotel booking and the first search result is actually an app, Google will stream the app to the users allowing them to make a booking. This move is something similar to a simulator wherein the app is sandboxed in a simulated environment. As per TechCrunch, the streaming is functional only on nine apps as of now and includes Hotel Tonight, Weather, Chimani, Gourmey, My Horoscope, Visual Anatomy Free, Useful Knots, Daily Horoscope and New York Subway. The streaming feature will be available on phones in US which are running Android Lollipop and higher. Google search has been…
