4 Organizational Hurdles To SEO For Business Leaders To Overcome In 2016

With the new year just around the corner, let’s look at four major issues holding back businesses when it comes to SEO. Unless your organization can acknowledge and address these, you may not be prepared for success in 2016.1. Your Marketing Can’t Be Integrated Without An SEO StrategySadly, many business leaders and “strategists” take the position that SEO is a minuscule fragment of their marketing mix, something that can be “tacked on” later. A few even consider SEO a task to be handled by the IT department. As an SEO consultant and specialist, I’m frustrated at the scant interest most marketing managers and business leaders devote to understanding SEO. It is critical for sales and growth, yet my bigger business clients seem to be the worst in this respect. This is, in part, because there’s more distance between them and the money they spend on marketing. Start-ups and smaller companies, without the luxury of an unlimited budget, are more discerning and careful. Gone are the days when …

See Hour-by-Hour Trends In AdWords With Heat Maps

Everybody loves heat maps! They make it so much easier to see patterns in your data. They’re especially good for looking at how performance changes over the hours of the day and the days of the week: with 168 different data points, it’s hard to see anything if you just have a table of numbers. So the team at Brainlabs (my employer) wrote a script to help you create heat maps automatically. We hope you love it as much as we do….What Does It Do?This script takes the metrics of your choice and then totals them up for each hour of each day of the week. It also smooths the data. Then it pumps the result into a Google Docs spreadsheet where — through the magic of conditional formatting — it turns into a heat map. As a bonus, we’ve thrown in a line graph, so you have another way to see the difference between the weekdays.[Read the full article — and get the free AdWords script — on Search Engine Land.]

Obi Worldphone SF1 Launching in India on November 26

Obi had unveiled their new phones the SJ1.5 and the SF1 a couple of months ago and now the John Sculley co-founded company will shortly reenter India with the flagship SF1. Obi had garnered quiet a lot of attention internationally as the smartphones not only packed a decent set of hardware but also doted a premium design, fit and finish. The company has already launched its devices in the East Asia and the Middle East, and now it wants to enter the Indian market, thanks to the sheer volume driven business dynamics of the Indian smartphone market. As you might be aware, Obi has partnered with Ammunition Studio for the design, which is one of the most aesthetically pleasing design I have personally come across in the budget segment. Both the Obi devices run on a custom UI called Lifespeed, which according to the company claims has been designed to work in tandem with the hardware.John Sculley who previously headed Apple and Pepsi cola is rest assured that both the smartphones will gain t…

How Snapchat’s Sponsored Lens For The Peanuts Movie Was Born

In retrospect, the choice was obvious. Of course, the stream of candy corn should flow into Snapchatters’ mouths rather than be spewed out in a vomitous flow. But in the heat of the discussion about designing the first Sponsored Lens to promote “The Peanuts Movie,” all angles were considered. Avatar Labs, the Los Angeles-based agency hired by Fox Studios, had a tight window to come up with a design for a new advertising format and expectations were high.“Peanuts is a marquee property for Fox, so there were a lot of eyes on this,” Avatar Labs’ vice president of client services Jason Steinberg told Marketing Land. “Snapchat also had equally lofty expectations and we as a creative agency also wanted to really demonstrate our best work. And on top of that, the decision making that really mattered was the Snapchat audience. How do we do something that’s fun and compelling and really engaging for them?”Marketers of all stripes are scrambling after the Snapchat audience, a tantalizing target …

Marketing Analysis: Unlocking The Power Of Descriptive Statistics

Let me be up front: this post will contain statistics. Not the fun, pithy kind like “60 percent of statistics are made up on the spot,” but actual cold, hard statistical practices.Joking aside, I’m going to run through some fairly high-level statistical analysis practices that you can employ every day to help make sense of your marketing data, allowing better strategic decisions. And it won’t be painful at all, I promise.“But I do this already. I’m always analysing my data!” I hear you say incredulously. This is probably very true — most users of web analytics (Google Analytics, Omniture, et al.) instinctively apply what would formally be known as “descriptive statistics.”For example, you readily identify a spike or a drop in your daily traffic by “eyeballing” a chart; you use averages to quickly assess performance; and you do all sorts of comparisons that help you understand what is happening (and importantly, what you need to do next).Although a loose adherence to the general princip…

What Optimization Leaders Are Doing (And You Should Be Doing, Too)

I spend my days surrounded by some of the boldest, most innovative thinkers in the digital marketing universe — and it’s pretty incredible. They’re taking risks, experimenting, testing, and through it all, changing the way we think about optimization. These elite doers know testing and optimization are critical pieces of their digital monetization strategy, and they’re pushing the envelope as far, as fast and as hard as they can to maximize it.These thinkers have given me a unique perspective on what really separates optimization leaders from the rest of the pack. From where I sit, it’s clear what they’re doing that most organizations aren’t — and it’s equally clear how fellow marketers can benefit from these elite best practices and learned behaviors.Digging in, it seems to all boil down to five areas of understanding and action:1. Using Data ReligiouslyAbove all, optimization leaders are using data to understand who their audience is — and from there, to deliver spot-on experiences.Y…

Google Analytics Adds Calculated Metrics

Google has rolled out a new feature called Calculated Metrics that extends the power of Google Analytics by letting users create new metrics/reports that are based on the existing set of traditional metrics. For example, with calculated metrics, an e-commerce company could create a Revenue Per User metric by combining the traditional Revenue and Users data from Google Analytics. A Currency Conversion metric can be created by using the Revenue metric and doing some simple math — i.e., multiplying it by the current conversion rate for the target country. There’s been no official Google blog post about it that we’ve found, but it was the primary feature that Google listed in its most recent monthly Google Analytics product update email. Here’s what the email said:We are excited to announce the addition of the highly anticipated Calculated Metrics in Google Analytics! Calculated Metrics are user-defined metrics that are computed from existing metrics. This can help drive more relevant analy…

Why Marketers So Often Miss The Mark

I’m off to exhibit at another trade show. I know this is typical within the job description of many a marketer’s day-to-day. Tasks like coordinating logistics, dealing with union guys, picking out carpet colors and wondering how anyone can charge $80 per day for a garbage basket are often the bane of our very existence. But truth be told, I love trade shows. To me, trade shows are marketing incarnate. If done right, they provide marketers with boundless opportunities to meet with and talk to potential clients.Yet many of us marketers actually shy away from the floor, avoid booth duty and suddenly become introverts at the most inopportune time. I know — I’ve done it myself! The same goes for answering the sales line, taking a support call, or — gasp — doing a cold call. We are professionals at coming up with an excuse that will preclude our participation in these “non-marketing-related” tasks. We use excuses to avoid talking to customers and prospects. “I have a blog to write!” “There’s a…

HireGun.co Does The Vetting For Companies In Need Of Digital Marketing & SEO Help

After working with a number of clients who had been burned by illicit consultants, John Doherty was inspired to create an agency that would help companies find reputable search marketing and SEO professionals.“One day, I got extremely frustrated with both Google and bad SEOs,” says Doherty, “Google because there was no rhyme or reason to what worked or didn’t for the client, and the bad SEOs because they did terrible work and still got paid.”As a freelance consultant himself, Doherty says he decided then and there that he wanted to help good marketers build their businesses.“I began to build out a set of consultants, but then realized this was going to take a lot of time and effort.”Doherty said he decided to see if consultants and agencies would be willing to pay for qualified leads. In 2013, he founded HireGun, and now partners with approximately 50 consultants and agencies, placing them with companies in need of SEO and search marketing work. After leaving his freelance work to bui…

What am I doing wrong: Letter of a Frustrated Blogger to himself

Why am I not getting any traffic? Why am I not earning even a penny a day? What mistakes am I making? What the hell am I doing wrong?Like thousand others bloggers, I’m striving for the same answer. Sometimes it’s so frustrating that I feel like quitting. Sometimes I wonder is it really what I want to do. Is it what really I am intended to do? I take out the laptop, sit down and look for a topic to write on.After choosing a random topic, I started writing. Sometimes t…
