What Bernie Sanders Can (Kind Of) Teach Us About SEO In 2016 & Beyond

Full disclosure: I love Bernie Sanders. I think he’s a smart, principled guy. He was also the subject of my favorite SNL skit this year; he even does his own impressions! While Bernie Sanders hasn’t personally taught me anything about SEO, a website promoting his presidential candidacy can teach us a good lesson about how businesses can think about SEO as we move into 2016 (and beyond). It was actually through the process of researching how I (as an independent voter) could potentially vote for Bernie that I decided to create this article. I live in Massachusetts, so I Googled “register to vote democratic primary ma” — and was surprised by the result:A “Vote for Bernie” microsite (his main campaign site is BernieSanders.com) was outranking the state of Massachusetts’s official pages on the topic.I wondered if this was consistent with other areas of the country. To get a cleaner look at those SERPs, I fired up the Google AdWords ad preview tool.I find this to be a really handy tool for t…

E-Commerce Conversion Rate Rose To 71% Higher Than October Average Last Week

Americans are getting more serious about their online holiday shopping as Black Friday approaches. According to aggregate e-commerce figures from HookLogic, which runs an ad network on retail sites like Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Macy’s, traffic to product pages was up 53% in the week beginning Monday, November 16, as compared to the baseline established in October. Compared with the previous week, traffic was up 15%.Meanwhile, the folks visiting those product pages were increasingly likely to move from browsing to buying. HookLogic says the conversion rate was up 71% compared with the baseline period, and up 10% from the week before. What were they buying? If their search behavior on these sites was any indication, electronics — especially TVs — are hot items, according to the company’s listing of top 20 non-branded search terms. Other electronics of interest include “laptop,” “tablets,” and “laptops.” Shoppers also seemed focused on gussying up their homes for expected holiday vis…

Google Shows Offline Analytics Capabilities With Holiday Store Traffic Data

Like so many others Google is putting out holiday shopping data this week. I’m sitting on 40 or more studies and surveys that discuss who’s going to show up (or not show up) in stores this Black Friday weekend. But what’s most interesting about Google’s data is not so much the data itself but the capability that it reflects. This is the first time that Google is revealing offline analytics. Google’s report on foot traffic during the holiday season represents aggregated data from mobile users with location history turned on.In the form of a “store foot traffic index” Google reveals that traffic patterns are different for different categories of stories. Some have greater visitation on Black Friday and some on the Saturday before Christmas.Another interesting insight is that on Black Friday itself crowds peak in the afternoon.Google has started using some of this same data to show when local places are busiest. For example, the following screenshot from the Knowledge Graph shows historic…

New Google Play “Warning”: App May Contain Advertising

Is “advertising” becoming a dirty word? In the broader climate of complaints about low-quality ads and ad blocking it’s interesting to see new labeling in Google Play about apps with ads.According to Android Authority, Google Play will start to require developer disclosures about whether apps are supported by advertising. This will take the form of an “ad-supported” label. It will roll out early next year. This started in apps directed at kids, which makes sense. But it’s now going to be Google Play store-wide. Below is an example of the labeling. It’s pretty innocuous.I haven’t spoken to Google about this. I would assume this is being done in the interests of transparency and consistency. I’m also certain that Google wouldn’t say ad-supported apps need “warnings” of any kind. However in the larger environment where services like YouTube, Pandora, Hulu and others are offering ad-free versions it’s an interesting development.

Marketing And The Gravitas Issue

Is it ageism, or is it human nature? Whatever it is, it seems to have morphed 180 degrees from the dot-com boom era.Back in the late 90s, when digital anything meant giddy valuations, and one of life’s biggest mysteries was how was Google going to monetize, there was a prevailing and oft-stated bias in both Silicon Alley and Silicon Valley.Anyone over 40 didn’t “get it” (though “it” was never explained or defined). I personally heard boardroom suggestions that over-40 staff be jettisoned like so much expired produce.Twenty-somethings were EVPs, the parties were insane, and the jargon around companies, their products and services, and even job titles was impenetrable.Blue-haired founders were getting the full-on “New Yorker” profile treatment (“No one at the company appears to be over 25”), and all was go-go with the world… Until it all burst, and many of those 20-somethings took big salary cuts as they sought gigs at Starbucks and The Gap.Fast-forward all these years later and the age…

A Wireless USB Stick that Expands your Phone’s Storage (And a Giveaway)

What do you do when your mobile phone has limited storage and there’s no option to add an external SD card? How do you carry all your videos and documents where there’s not an iota of space left on the device? Yes, you do have cloud-based services like Dropbox or Google Drive that add virtually unlimited storage to your phone but you’ve to be connected to the Internet to access your files. This week I’ve been testing a wireless USB stick from Sandisk that adds storage to your phones and tablets much like a regular USB drive. To get started, you plug the USB device into your laptop or desktop computer and let it charge for about an hour or two. You can also transfer the files to the stick from the computer through Windows Explorer or Finder on Mac.Once the device is charged, you tap the little power button on the stick to turn it on. Now install the Sandisk Connect app on your mobile phone, go to WiFi settings on your phone and connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot created by the USB stick. That…

Programmatic’s New Tenants: Brand Marketers

During the early growth period of programmatic digital advertising, the notion of automation and more precise, relevant targeting was mostly embraced by the performance marketing sector of the broader ecosystem.Direct response-centric campaigns were a natural fit for programmatic methods, as they were awarded for such lower-funnel key performance indicators like clicks and conversions.Define the goals that matter for your bottom line, down to transaction-level ROI, and optimize every media dollar spent against those goals. Integrate your offline and CRM data both to target offline audiences and to optimize to offline conversion events, from in-store purchases to hotel stays to test-drives to mortgage approvals. Rinse, repeat. On the other hand, the upper funnel-branding crowd was standing on the sidelines, skeptical that programmatic would work for them. During this time, branding campaign budgets were kept parked in broad awareness vehicles like network television and premium display …

Snapchat Launches Story Explorer, A Swipeable Way To Get Different Visual Perspectives

Snapchat users can now get a different angle and perspective on a particular story with “Story Explorer.” Users will be able to explore a specific story by swiping up when an “Explore” tab is present on a particular story.Story Explorer uses technology built to add a different point of view to a story. Think about watching the final moment of a sporting event from various seats, or getting different points of view around a breaking news story. This feature will bring an additional layer to stories, something that Twitter Moments doesn’t offer. Users can check out “Explorer” in action when browsing the live New York and Los Angeles stories, with the addition of more stories soon.Overall, this is a very nice feature, and if executed well, it could be a major draw in the real-time breaking event space. The ability to tie varying perspectives angles to a specific event in real time currently doesn’t exist. Brands and companies, especially those that run live events, should pay close atten…

How to Cope with Too Many Tabs Open in Your Browser

If you love multitasking like I do, you definitely have at least 10 different tabs open at the same time. No matter what web browser you use, be it Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, or even Internet Explorer, this can get a little annoying at times. With Facebook, Twitter, Google, your email, a blog and a few other pages open simultaneously, the browser is being slowed down, and it can often even crash. To avoid this kind of unpleasant situations, you can take advantage of the tab management tips below. Even if you have a computer with huge amount of RAM, and the internet itself is fast enough, the below tips to cope with the too-many-tabs syndrome can still be very useful.Use Session ManagerSome of the most useful tools to use are extensions that you can find in your web browser if you know where to look for them. Session Manager is one of them, and it can help with a lot of stuff. It saves all of your open tabs and browsing sessions in case Chrome or Firefox crashes.Apart from t…

Yahoo Strengthens its Stance Against Ad-Blockers, Stops Some Users from Accessing Their Emails

Yahoo has confirmed that it is blocking some people from who use Ad-blocking software from accessing their Yahoo Mails. It also displayed a message asking users to disable ad-blocker on their browsers to access their mailbox. The ad-blocking software on the other hand have told that they were able to work around the restriction, already. Ad-Blocking has been causing a hue and cry among the publishers & service advertisers, as their bread and butter still depends on the ads displayed on the website. Meanwhile, the ad-blocking policies have also not been forthcoming and white listing of ads by the ad-blockers is just one instance of the deviation. On the other side of the turf, those in support of Ad-blocking say that disabling the advertisements will improve the smartphone battery life and also reduce the mobile data usage. That being said, Yahoo had recently got infected by a Malware attract via its advertisement networks on its homepage.Blocking ads has been hurting the publishers …
