How To Have A Great Relationship With Your Link Builder

Over the past several years, I’ve had the enormous pleasure of working with some the most amazing clients ever. Some are company owners with very little knowledge of SEO. Some are company SEOs who have been in the industry for over a decade. Some are marketing managers. I can easily work with all of them because they have one major thing in common: they’re willing to talk to me and to listen to me.The relationship between any marketer who isn’t working in-house and his or her in-house contact is a very important one, one that sets the tone for any work to be in done, in my opinion. It’s hard to really put your heart and soul into something when you don’t feel like you’re a part of a team.Just as I’ve had amazing clients, I’ve had some where the relationship was either nonexistent or fractious. I’ll be honest and say that when someone basically commands me to “just shut up and do what I say,” I don’t really feel like I can put in the same level of effort as with a client who wants to be…

Thanksgiving Weekend 2015: The Stats That Mattered

With so many retailers vying for a piece of the purchase-ready consumer base, the weekend after Thanksgiving remains one of the most intense periods for online e-commerce advertisers. Increased demand for inventory drives up prices, and many advertisers pull out all the stops on the creative front to drum up attention and purchase rates. This kind of proverbial arms race doesn’t really slow down until after Christmas, but the trends observed over the Thanksgiving weekend provide a kind of window into what can be expected moving forward. The data outlined below was drawn as part of my work at Nanigans, and it is focused squarely on Facebook e-commerce advertising activity and associated same-day purchase events. You can find more on e-commerce trends during the Thanksgiving weekend in Marketing Land’s weekly Online Retail Shopping Report.Mobile Hits A High PointTraditionally, e-commerce advertisers have focused on desktop, thanks to historical returns. In aggregate, this advantage is slo…

TrueView For Shopping: Making YouTube The Next Big Shopping Destination

Shopping campaigns, or Product Listing Ads (PLAs), have proved revolutionary for AdWords e-commerce. They combine a visually engaging experience on the search results page with the ability to instantly compare prices across retailers. In fact, these ads have been such a success that Google has continued to invest in them, and as a result, we’ve seen them evolve into an absolutely vital tool for any online retailer. In 2014, Google actually started putting Shopping results above text ads on the search engine results page (SERP), as you can see in the example below. This reflected what they’d started to see in their data and hear from advertisers: Shopping was often outperforming traditional search.Meanwhile, TrueView, the YouTube advertising platform, has been more of a slow burner. TrueView campaigns have only recently moved from their own interface to sit alongside other AdWords campaigns, meaning before now it was easy to overlook them as an option. With four billion views on YouTube e…

Site Redesign & Migration Tips To Avoid SEO & UX Disasters

Launching a new site is always exciting for those involved. But it can also be intimidating, not least because it is so hard to predict how users and search engines will react to it.Websites get redesigned, rebranded and migrated for all sorts of reasons, but stakeholders are always going to be interested in the traffic and revenue impact.Having been involved with several site migrations, I have seen online businesses make the same mistakes time and again. This guide shows how to avoid the most common SEO and UX pitfalls when redesigning, re-platforming or rebranding a website. When Things Go WrongWhen things go wrong, the main failure is often due to strategic mistakes that take place at the very early stages. Unfortunately, fixing these mistakes after the new site has launched can be very costly.A site redesign is often seen as the golden opportunity to address multiple known problems that may have cropped up over the years. However, radical strategic shifts can be risky unless there…

AdSense Mobile Text Ads Get Another Facelift

Google has updated the look of mobile AdSense text ads again.Above is an example of the new and old formats. Though the copy in the old example above is left justified, Google has typically used centered text and serif font . The biggest updates here are the shaded background, new rounded blue button and eliminating the subtle prompt to swipe in order to see the display URL — that funky design element made its debut in October 2014.The button design follows what is used in the richer text ads format that Google introduced in August. Richer text ads automatically convert text ads into image ads, incorporating advertiser logos and brand colors. These text ad formats compete in both text ad and display ad auctions.

How To Get Google Review Links After The G+ Update

If you play in the Local arena at all, you’ve probably seen the new Google Plus update and freaked out along with the rest of us. The redesign has completely dumped every “local” element, leaving marketers and business owners scratching their heads.Various blog posts and forum discussions popped up, with everyone freaking out about lamenting the updates. Is the update still in beta? Will any elements be added back? What about reviews? Where in the world *IS* Carmen Sandiego? Thanks to a recent post on the Google Advertiser Communities site from Matma B., we now know that Local pages are no longer a part of Google Plus, and the following features are no longer supported:Reviews (more on this in a minute)StarsCategoriesDirectionsPhoto uploadsInterior photosMapsHoursOpentable/app integrationThe change isn’t all that surprising, considering how Google has slowly been decoupling Google Plus from all of its different properties. Most Local SEO experts agree this won’t have much (if any) impa…

Stop Using Desktop Conversions For Mobile Search: 6 Strategies To Help Drive Mobile Calls

Despite the shift of local search from desktop to mobile, SMBs are still using desktop strategies for mobile marketing. While mobile ad spending is expected to increase by 50 percent, desktop advertising budgets driven by PPM, PPC and CTR are still often used to plan and measure mobile ad success. While those metrics are not entirely obsolete, mobile search should be analyzed with methods that take advantage of its strengths. One of those mobile metrics is calls. Click-to-call and call extensions make generating calls to SMBs a seamless one-touch action driven by mobile ads — unlike the much more deliberate and separate function of moving from desktop screen to dialing a phone number. As a result, analysts expect a sizable boost in call volumes to local businesses. Mobile search in particular will eclipse other sources and drive 65 billion calls to businesses by 2016, a volume that will grow at a 43 percent compound annual growth rate.Credit: DialogTech, “The Click-To-Call Playbook For P…

4 Questions Marketers Must Answer To Extend Holiday Sales Success

With just a few weeks of holiday shopping left, brands have already seen massive sales both on- and offline. According to the National Retail Federation, sales are expected to rise nearly four percent from last year’s totals. The growth isn’t startling, but it’s a significant uptick for a number of businesses. And it’s not just about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, either. However, brands can use social media data and insights from those days to learn lessons that apply throughout the year. Analyzing the way target audiences and customers discuss and react to their favorite brands and products on heavy shopping days can inform strategies that drive sales even after the holidays end. Here are four questions that marketers need to answer to make a successful holiday season the beginning of a successful sales campaign:1. Who Influences My Audience? When people think about social media influencers and brand advocates, they tend to think of celebrities. There’s truth to this, of course, but th…

Email Deliverability Requires New Solutions To Old Problems In 2016

No matter how perfectly designed your email is, if doesn’t land in the inbox, your customers won’t engage with it. This unfortunate truth was the fate of one out of every five promotional emails sent last year, as global deliverability declined to 79 percent. While the problem of reaching the inbox is old, the good news is that marketers have many new ways to keep their emails out of the spam folder in the coming year. The first step toward higher deliverability is understanding how and why your emails were declined in the first place. There are various elements that mailbox providers factor into their placement decisions, but the drop in 2015 was tied to three elements in particular: low engagement, complaints and inactive accounts.Deliverability HurdlesIt’s not surprising that the way your subscribers interact with your content impacts your deliverability. Positive engagements, like messages that are read and interacted with, factor favorably, while messages that are deleted without b…

Yahoo Announces It Will Spin Out Main Business Rather Than Alibaba Assets

In a reversal Yahoo announced this morning that it will abandon its planned spinoff of its remaining Alibaba shares and instead do a “reverse spinoff” of the rest of Yahoo. The reason the Alibaba spinoff was scrapped was uncertainty over tax liability.Originally Yahoo thought the Aabaco (Alibaba + Yahoo Small Business) spinoff would have limited or zero tax implications for the company. But the Internal Revenue Service declined to provide that reassurance, creating uncertainty and resulting in today’s decision. The Alibaba shares will still be separated from the main Yahoo business, resulting in two publicly traded companies — just not in the way originally intended. Here’s an excerpt from Yahoo’s public statement:Yahoo! Inc. today announced that its Board of Directors, after careful review and consideration of how to best drive long-term value for shareholders, has unanimously decided to suspend work on the pending plan, announced in January of 2015, to spin off the company’s remainin…

Dissecting the Advantages and Challenges for Reliance Jio 4G LTE in India

Now that we have finally entered December, it’s an interesting time for any telecom enthusiast in India. The reason for the enthusiasm is the purported launch of Reliance Jio. Although Reliance Jio has declared that they would launch officialy/commercially in December 2015, we shouldn’t hold our breath since it’s fully possible for the launch to be further delayed.Given the enormous rise of smartphones and the move to stream content from cloud, data consumption is at an all time high not only in India but all over the world. This has led to ubiquitous wireless broadband coverage (3G/4G) being a necessity for someone to make the most out of their smartphones. India for a long time has lagged other developed countries when it comes to 3G/4G deployment and speeds. Reliance Jio, with its massive investment, plans to change that. Most tech enthusiats don’t take telecom services seriously or think about it deeply since it’s a back-end of sorts for our computing needs, but this back-end is o…

Microsoft Gathers Muscle to Bypass Carriers and Deliver Updates Directly to Windows Phones

The smartphones have greatly evolved in the recent past, but one thing that still needs to be addressed is the updates issue. Unlike a decade ago when phones firmware update almost meant nothing to the users, the things have changed drastically. Now a Software update not only heralds with bug fixes, but also offer a new set of features that will add a whole new dimension to your existing phones. While the updating process has been pretty smooth with iOS since they don’t have a diversified ecosystem, it has been a pain for Android and Windows users. The updates trickle down to the devices only after the manufacturers write the drivers for the hardware which is usually closed source making it increasingly difficult for the OEMs to support the device. If the device has not been popular, irrespective of the price tag, manufacturers usually tend to skip them from the update list. Now adding to the problem is the fact that even the carriers are involved in this entire affair and they are oft…

4-inch iPhone 6c and Apple Watch 2 Expected to be Showcased in March 2016

Apple seems to be prepping an event in March 2016 wherein they are expected to pull the wraps from the second –generation Apple Watch. Along with the Watch, Apple could also be unveiling a 4-inch iPhone 6c as stated by the 9to5Mac sourcesApple tasted mixed success with the Apple Watch and the rumor is that the company has been working on the second generation Watch from quite some time. The Watch is expected to be fitted with new innards including a camera, wireless, sleep tracking and health sensor technologies although it is still unclear on which of these new features will actually make it to the production variant. It would also be safe to expect a handful of new bands and a software update as well for the Watch. Apple seemed to have abandoned the “c” variants of their phone which has missed out on almost three iterations, now the folks at Cupertino are trying to revive it in the form of a 4-inch iPhone 6c. It is beyond doubt that Apple will be compelled to borrow the 4-inch displa…

Top 10 YouTube Ads Of 2015: Clash Of Clans Ranks No. 1, But Mobile Is The Big Winner

Bloomua / Shutterstock.com YouTube has released its most popular video ads of 2015, with “Revenge” from video game Clash of Clans leading the list.Other brands to make the 2015 ad leaderboard included Hyundai’s “Message to Space” at No. 2, and the Ad Council’s “Love Has No Labels” video at No. 3.“Social conscience messages landed big on this year’s list of the top 10 ads,” says YouTube. Spots like the Ad Council’s video focusing on diversity and inclusion, Always #LikeAGirl campaign, and Fanpage.it’s “Slap Her” all put a spotlight on social issues. What’s more newsworthy than the overall messages of the ads, however, is the way they were viewed. YouTube says for the fist time ever, more people watched the top ten ads on mobile devices than desktop. The top ten ads had 470 million views in 2015…nearly two-thirds of those views happened on mobile. According to YouTube, overall views for the brand channels that had videos on the 2015 leaderboard doubled this year, with subscriptions for the …

TV’s Top Twitter Moments Of 2015: Kanye, Super Bowl & The Walking Dead

Kayne West crashed the Twitter TV party in 2015.Kayne’s announcement at the MTV Video Music Awards that he will run for president of the United States in 2020 spawned the most tweeted about moment of the year, according to data from Nielsen. There were 248,000 tweets in the minute following his announcement — it was facetious, right? — surpassing the 243,000 tweets sent at 8:19 p.m. during the Super Bowl telecast in February. The Kayne spectacle helped push the VMAs to record engagement on Twitter, even as the show’s overall Nielsen ratings plunged by 500,000 over 2014. the 21 million tweets were the most for a non-sports program since Nielsen started tracking the stats in 2011. In terms of total Twitter audience, the VMAs had 11 million uniques, third behind the Grammy Awards (13.3 million) and the Academy Awards (13.0 million).NBC’s broadcast of the Super Bowl, which again led the overall Nielsen ratings for the year with an average audience of 115 million viewers, had a Twitter audi…

Forecast: Digital Spending To Surpass TV Next Year In US, Globally By 2017

Earlier this year ZenithOptimedia projected that digital advertising would surpass traditional TV advertising by 2020. IPG’s Magna Global is saying it’s going to happen sooner — in 2017.According to a new global ad forecast, Magna Global estimates:Digital ad sales are expected to increase by +17.2 percent globally in 2015, while sales on traditional media formats declined by -2.0 percent. Digital formats thus now represent $160 billion globally, 32 percent of total ad sales, and will pass television as the largest media format in advertising revenues in 2017, i.e. one year earlier than previously expected.Television, the last traditional ad channel to hold out against the internet, is finally succumbing to digital. Audience fragmentation, cord cutting and over the top video services have diminished the once unassailable advertising medium. It’s also the case that many brands and agencies have cannibalized  TV budgets to feed digital as audience data show users flocking to other screen…
