Is Google’s Search Market Share Actually Dropping?

Last year, I conducted a comprehensive survey to discover the search engine preferences of internet users and learn who truly dominates the search market. All of the current search engine market share reporting entities (comScore, Hitwise, SimilarWeb and others) utilize technology-based tracking, and I wanted to see if a survey panel-based approach would yield the same results. What I discovered was only somewhat surprising. My results, placing Google at the top with 80 percent of the market, differed significantly from comScore’s 67 percent; but my findings were in line with most of the Google Analytics accounts I had seen, which show Google generating between 80 percent and 90 percent of all organic visits. Last year, I was at a loss to explain the discrepancy between my survey data and comScore’s data, but I chalked it up to how demographics might be weighted in comScore’s panel.Nonetheless, even if comScore’s methods might be undercounting Google, they should accurately follow direc…

A Beginner’s Guide To Social Media Marketing From The 10,000 Small Businesses Program

Bloomua / Shutterstock.com In July, I had the privilege of serving as a social media panelist for the New Orleans cohort of Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Small Businesses program. Along with two other online marketing professionals from the area, I was to host an interactive session with the business owners and entrepreneurs about leveraging social media for their businesses. The 10,000 Small Businesses program is a Goldman Sachs and Goldman Sachs Foundation investment to create jobs and economic opportunities across the country. The program provides entrepreneurs with better access to support services, education and capital via 20 locations and 100 partners in the US. Angie Scott, COO of Search Influence (my employer), is an alumna of the program. This is the 11th cohort of the program here in New Orleans, and the scholars were about halfway through their program at the time of the social media panel. As a young professional, sitting down with this room full of folks who’ve built businesses and…

The 1-Hour Documented Content Marketing Strategy

Content marketing strategies can be intense. After all, there’s a lot riding on the plans that will guide all your efforts ranging from who to target, what type of content to create, what KPIs to measure, where to promote, how to distribute, how to segment your list, what numbers to hit… OK, STOP!Let’s take a big deep breath together for a second… and start over.Content marketing strategies can be intense. But they don’t have to be stressful. What you really need is a little good old-fashioned teamwork, a checklist, some thoughtful conversations and 60 minutes on the clock. Just by bringing these few elements together, you’ll be on your way to creating a documented content strategy.Key word: documented. In recent research from Content Marketing Institute, it was found that 53 percent of the (self-reported) most effective B2B content marketers have a content strategy, AND it is documented. Compare that with just 13 percent of the least effective content marketers who do, and the numbers cl…

The Email Marketing Workout

We’re now well into the festive season, and marketers need to be bringing their A game.At SendGrid (my employer), we believe in the power of preparation, so we have developed what we call the “email marketing workout,” a list of the five most important pointers for marketers to run through when planning each email campaign to ensure that they are getting the most clicks and subscribes.1. ContentDon’t be too wordy. A clear and direct approach might sound obvious, but it’s critical that there is no ambiguity around what action your users need to take. It’s worth bringing a slight sense of urgency to your CTA (call to action). Words such as “now” or “today” do have a positive effect on engagement levels. It’s important to present yourself in an appropriate way. Think about how your name and email address appear in the recipient’s inbox. Recipients are more likely to reply to a named person than to an anonymous email which appears as part of an automated system. And beware: No-replies are ne…

First Impressions: Infocus M680 – Metal Goes Mainstream

InFocus, the American communication giant has been very busy with launching smartphones especially for the Indian market. And couple of their phones in the sub Rs 10,000 range have been doing pretty good amidst the plethora of companies fighting it out in the marketplace. In continuing their quest to grab hold of a market share in a category that means for the masses – the budget range phablet, InFocus has just launched the the M680 exclusively on Snapdeal eCommerce portal. And here we are, taking a quick look at the phone and presenting you our first impressions.Bringing in a budget device in any category would mean cutting the corners and usually the design of the phone takes a beating. But that trend is quickly changing with companies bringing in some amount of metal into the build and some smooth contours to bring in some appeal (remember the Coolpad Note 3? It had a metallic/chrome ring as its frame giving it a rich look). InFocus seems to be doing something similar here – a 5.5 …

“If only…”: Ten Trends Nokia Spotted and Failed to Cash in On

They had so much market share a few years ago. What went wrong?”The query came with a wry grin from the former Nokia (now Microsoft) Store in Delhi. It is a store from which I had bought my first three Nokia devices – the N70, the E61i and the N95 8 GB, in a period spanning 2006-2009. And as he put up banners for the latest Lumia devices – the 950 and 950 XL – which now come with Microsoft’s branding and went on sale over the weekend, he asked the question that many have in the past. Nokia had had a seeming stranglehold on the phone market in 2009. Why then did it suddenly find itself selling its phone business a mere five years later to Microsoft? The standard answer generally is that the company failed to innovate speedily in the face of high class competition from Apple and the Android-powered HTC and Samsung. That, however, is not the complete truth. For although not too many realise it, Nokia had actually spotted and even invested in some of the trends that would spur the smartpho…
