The Surface Pro 4 Diaries, Day 3: The Surface Pen – Powerful, But Not Quite Paramount

One of the most distinct accessories of the Surface Pro 4, and one which indeed comes bundled with the device in India (not with the Surface Pro 3, though), is the Surface Pen. And while the Type Keyboard with chunky attaching sound to the tablet side of the Surface has made more noise (literally as well as in terms of media attention), the Surface Pen is also part of Microsoft’s plans for the Surface world – the very fact that it is bundled with the Surface Pro 4 is proof of that intent, if nothing else is. The Big M in Redmond had brought very good handwriting recognition and support for styluses in the touch-oriented Windows 8, and while other brands have also included styluses with their Windows devices (most notably Lenovo, with the ThinkPad Helix series), the Surface Pen is easily the most popular stylus around in Windows-land.And well, in terms of sheer functionality, it certainly has the beating of the Apple Pencil that comes with the iPad Pro – it is designed in a pen like ma…

How To Receive Commission Junction Affiliate Payment via Payoneer

When it comes to receiving affiliates & advertising income from foreign countries, we have limited options. Especially if the only option is to receive payment via check, I’m sure you are aware of problems associated with it. It’s nothing new that when the check is the only option to receive payment, we face the major issues like undelivered mail & reissue check is the only option which delays the payment process. This is one problem most of the AdSense publishers used to face until recently they introduced EFT payment option.Today post is regarding Commission Junction, which is one of the popular affiliate marketplaces along with ShareASale & Clickbank. Recently I configured my Commission Junction account to receive payment using Payoneer service. I have written about Payoneer service here & here. It’s a free online service which will let you receive payment from foreign countries. In this tutorial,  I will share how you can configure your Commission Junction account t…

Rainpal Wants to Make Riding Bikes in Rain Less Dangerous with its Electric Wiper for Helmets

As they say riding a motorcycle is an art by itself and riding it in rain is definitely an art filled with perils. Unlike cars, while riding a motorcycle or any other two wheeler, the rider is exposed to the air, he along with his machine has to cut through the air and overcome the resistance from the same. In a rainy situation, apart from the skids and harsh weather, one more very important thing is that the rider has to clear his helmets visor every now and then. This can become a painful exercise, and unclear vision has often lead to accidents. Rainpal is a new product that wants to solve the helmet visibility problem in rains with its wiper mechanism for the helmets. The automatic wiper system has been engineered in India, designed in Czech and is currently being manufactured in China. The wiper comes as an attachment that can be clamped to any helmet visors almost instantly. The wiper mechanism will be of help to the visor even at speeds up to 160Km/hr thanks to the tiny suctions a…

The Surface Pro 4 Diaries, Day 2: A Notebook, Yes; A Laptop…er…no!

Hello. That one word pretty much sums up the biggest and most pleasant surprise the Surface Pro 4 has thrown at us so far. Yes, it is really a Windows 10 feature – the ability to log in by just looking at the display rather than a fingerprint scanner or a password. And we have have seen something similar in the past as well: remember those Lenovo devices that used to come with facial recognition using the front facing camera in the early Windows Vista days (and which got cursed thoroughly because they added some more seconds to what was an already tedious boot up process)? But what makes Windows Hello really special on the Surface Pro 4 is the speed at which it works – just be in front of the display and the device logs you in within seconds. So much so that it has actually become a sort of party trick – restart the Surface and then see the device recognize you and see people go “wow!” Evidently you need special cameras to get the most out of Windows Hello – a few of our colleagues hav…

MarketingZoom Launches Site For Buying And Selling Marketing

From the MarketingZoom site A new website, launching in a public beta this week, believes that marketers need better ways to find targets and resources.Called MarketingZoom, the Portland, Oregon-based company is the brainchild of president/founder Tony Scott. He also runs a motor sports marketing agency in the Portland area called Drive Motorsports International, which represents race car drivers, corporate marketers, and sponsors.“We were stuck with the caveman solution of cold calls and sending proposals” to find sponsors or publicize the races, he told me, so MarketingZoom is his attempt to get beyond that Stone Age.In its launch announcement, MarketingZoom said its evolution derived from trying to answer one question:“If I was a small local business, what options do I have to market my business in my area? The site allows users to set up a profile as either a Company, an Opportunity, or an Agency, and to define the opportunities sought or the possibilities offered.A billboard compan…

Ad Blocking Is A Kind Of Populist Revolt Against The Internet Establishment

AdChoices is a failure. Yet the IAB recently touted the AdChoices icon/program as a great industry success. In that divide and disconnect lies the problem at the heart of the ad blocking controversy — a fundamental lack of understanding of and empathy for users.Despite the ubiquity of the AdChoices icon, multiple surveys (2014, 2015) have found consumers are either not aware or don’t understand it — and few engage with it. The IAB and DAA offer competing data suggesting growing awareness but the weight of evidence shows most consumers don’t know about AdChoices and certainly don’t use it.Ad blocking has arisen chiefly because publishers, technology providers and advertisers have largely taken users for granted, as simply eyeballs, conversions or audiences ready to be tracked and harvested at will. There’s been a long-standing paternalism in parts of the digital advertising industry that has given rise to ad blocking.Ad blockers are addressing real-world problems and user frustrations …

PPC Geo-Bidding, Simplified

Recently, I came across a social media post that — honest to goodness — went on at length about the price the poster would be willing to pay for a new brand of ketchup.“I’d need 50 percent off to give it a try,” opined the timid tomato tester. “If I turn out not to like the product, it’s just a whole lot of wasted time, and a waste of food .”“This calls for snark!” some alien voice urged me.I’m not proud of it, but there was only one possible reply: “Dude. It’s just ketchup.”Unlike the man-child clinging to the safety of the almighty Heinz brand, some people actually get paid to overthink stuff. That appears to be the case in the marketing profession.Despite some underlying complexity in the permutations, probabilities and platforms, there are many topics in digital marketing today that could use a little dumbing down — at the very least to overcome paralysis, but also to avoid doing fake work or engaging in “doctor that actually makes the patient sicker” activity (of the type Nassim …

7 Traits That Will Make You A Great Digital Marketer

It’s hard to believe, but as of this month, I’ve been the owner of an SEO and online marketing agency for 10 short, yet very long years. If you’re reading this, you’re probably “in the industry,” or at least aspire to be — so you don’t need me to tell you how difficult it can be to attract and retain quality employees in an ever-evolving, high-stakes and fast-paced work environment. It’s certainly something my leadership team and I have spent countless hours trying to figure out. It’s also one of the questions I get asked most often from colleagues in the industry: What makes a great employee?Though qualities like knowledge of HTML or information architecture are useful, the one thing SEO and digital marketing rock stars all have in common is that they seem to have certain “intangible” qualities. Personality traits like self-motivation, leadership and the constant thirst for knowledge top the lists and seem to be a predictor of long-term success. While the Millennial generation, or Gen-Y…

When You Rank High Organically But Not Locally (Case Study)

I always enjoy solving Local SEO puzzles, but there’s one that has baffled me for the last couple of years. I’ve had many other professionals in the Local SEO community look at it, and they were equally stumped. It was one of those cases that seemed to make no sense at all, until it finally hit me a week ago.The issue was with a handyman company I work with in Florida that has multiple offices. All their offices rank wonderfully for the keyword pattern “handyman + [city]” — except one. Their office in Tampa has always had an issue that I hear about quite often in the Local SEO world: They rank very high organically, but not in the local results (the 3-pack/map pack).Whenever I come across a situation where organic ranking is high but local ranking is low, it always makes me cringe. It seems to be one of the biggest mysteries out there in Local SEO. I’ve learned a lot in my quest to solve this one and wanted to share it.[Read the full article on Search Engine Land.]

Is A “High” Bounce Rate Always Bad? Plus: How To Improve Bounce Rates

When we ask prospective customers if they know how their website is performing, they often quote a Bounce Rate percentage or some other standard Google Analytics site metrics such as “pages per session” or “time on site” and so on, with the assumption that a bounce rate above some percentage is bad.But is a “high” bounce rate always bad?
Bounce RateThe percentage of visitors who enter the site and then leave (“bounce”) rather than continuing on to view other pages within the same site.Is A High Bounce Rate Always Bad?Sometimes A High Bounce Rate Is Okay. Site metrics, like a bounce rate, should be looked at on a case-by-case basis to determine if, for example, a bounce rate is good or bad.For example, the bounce rate for an entrance page (an entrance page is any page where people enter the site from some traffic source) may seem like a high percentage. Let’s say it’s over 70 percent, which many people would assume is bad because it means most people are viewing this page and going n…

Need New Marketing Tech? Make Sure You Look Under The Hood

We don’t do much these days without the help of technology. Even the office coffee machine has some kind of software in it. Our reliance on marketing technology to manage customer relationships, organize our days and handle everything in between means we need software that is both reliable and powerful.Identifying the right options for new marketing tools requires a careful analysis of the technology and its capabilities. However, decision-makers need to consider some points about the team and business behind applications, as well.To make the right decision, you’ll want to look into the following four things:1. Who’s Designing It? How Do They Do It?The methodology a company’s software development team employs is an important piece of information. No iteration of software comes without flaws or bugs that need to be patched. Moreover, software in the as-a-service era must evolve as rapidly as user demand and needs change. If your company needs marketing software that’s accessible on the …

New Leak Reveals a Lot About the HTC One M10 Including Snapdragon 820 and a QHD Display

With the time closing in on the year’s biggest launches, leaks are now starting to pour in revealing almost all the new upcoming products. We saw the Samsung Galaxy S7’s leak not so long ago, LG’s G5 was in the news sometime back but that one device which hadn’t made an appearance – the HTC’s One M10 has now showed up in this new coverage by VentureBeat, courtesy the prolific leaker, Evan Blass.According to the source, the HTC One M10 (codenamed HTC Perfume) will come with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 820 SoC along with the Adreno 530 GPU. The company, that once believed the specifications don’t matter, is now going all out as the device is tipped to sport 4GB of RAM, at least 32GB of internal storage (expandable via a Micro SD slot), a 1440 x 2560 QHD display (AMOLED most probably) and will run on the HTC’s Sense 8.0 UI on top of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Also, it will rock a fingerprint scanner on the front that will be embedded in the home button just like HTC’s recent products.Jus…

Snapchat New Feature Allows Friends To Be Added With Personalized URL

One of the biggest gripes of Snapchat to date has been that it’s hard to find your friends to add, and you require a Snapcode to grow your network. Those using the newest version of Snapchat now have an option to share their URL instead of their Snapcode to add them online. The URL appears to be simple to use, providing http://ift.tt/1Uv00CS so that you can now easily add anyone as long as you know the syntax. To access this unique URL in the app, open Snapchat, drag the camera view, click “Add Friends” and then click “Share Username.” Someone accessing this URL on their phone will be able to add you immediately. This becomes particularly helpful in any type of social media environment on the mobile, such as Twitter and Facebook mobile–but it doesn’t hurt to know that URL to encourage people to add you on your website or blog.

The Surfaco Pro 4 Diaries, Day 1: Not Just Another Notebook!

Before we get underway, let me first answer the question that a lot of people asked me when I announced that I would be using the just-released (in India, at least – oh we are so the tech super power that gets devices late… but THAT is another story for another day) Microsoft Surface Pro 4 as my main notebook for five days, just as I did the iPad Pro for the iPad Pro diaries. Now, the question that many have brought up – and very validly in my opinion – is that doing something like that with the iPad Pro made sense because it was not supposed to be a notebook but could do some of a notebook’s tasks provided one got the keyboard cover. So yes, it was not-a-notebook trying to do what a notebook did. So seeing if one could get through five days just using it and not a “regular” notebook made sense. But the Surface Pro 4 is a very contrary beast. Yes, it is sold mainly in tablet form (Microsoft executives kept referring to it as a ‘tablet’ throughout the launch) and the bundling of the Sur…
