Cat’s Latest Rugged Phone will be the First Phone to House a Thermal Sensing Camera

Caterpillar is a company known for its rugged machinery and the apparels business. However, it has also been coming up with some rugged flagship phones and the new S60 seems to be its latest produce. The new S60 comes with some mind boggling features like the Flir thermal imaging camera and the first waterproof rating that allows it to be immersed up to 5 meters for a maximum time period of one hour.

Cat has literally packed the Flir’s standalone thermal camera in the S60 and the sensor will still offer the same functionalities as its standalone counterpart. Apart from producing a live thermal image, it also measures the surface temperature and has the ability to record both stills and video, albeit in VGA resolution. The thermal camera can be extensively used in rescue missions and the overall ruggedness of the phone is also expected to find appeal with a certain niche of buyers.

On a nutshell, the Cat S60 is pretty much well equipped with 4.7-inch display at 720p, Snapdragon 617 paired with 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of on-board storage along with microSD card slot. On the imaging front, the S60 offers a 13-Megapixel primary sensor and a 5-Megapixel secondary sensor. Just like the other waterproof phones, the Cat S60 comes with rubber lids for the mic and earphone openings, which once closed the phone can be taken at depths of up to 5-metres, way beyond the 1.5-metres water proofing other devices come with. The S60 comes backed with a 3,800mAh battery pack and it will run on Android Lollipop 5.1.

The ruggedness of the phone we were talking about till now is bought upon by the Gorilla Glass 4 which has been further thickened to 1 mm and the chassis is made up of a toughened plastic composite. The phone seems to have already survived drop tests of 1.8 meters multiple times, thus ensuring that the phone can withstand the impact on different natural angles.

The Cat S60 is priced at $599 and considering the extra set of rugged features it offers the price tag seems justifiable. While most of us might find the phone to be weird in shape and expensive, we need to understand that it is meant to for a certain niche of buyers for whom the only features that would matter the most will be the ruggedness of the phone.

How to Get SMS Alerts for Gmail via Twitter

How do you get SMS notifications on your mobile phone for important emails in your Gmail? Google doesn’t support text notifications for their email service but Twitter does. If we can figure out a way to connect our Twitter and Gmail accounts, the Gmail notifications can arrive as text on our mobile via Twitter. Let me explain:Twitter allows you to follow any @user via a simple SMS. They provide short codes for all countries (see list) and if you text FOLLOW to this shortcode following by the  username, any tweets from that user will arrive in your phone as text notifications. For instance, if you are in the US, you can tweet FOLLOW labnol to 40404 to get my tweets as text messages. Similarly, users in India can text FOLLOW labnol to 9248948837 to get the tweets via SMS.The short code service of Twitter can act as a Gmail SMS notifier. You create a new Twitter account, set the privacy to private and this account will send a tweet when you get a new email in Gmail. Follow this account …

Instagram Story links get 15-25% swipe-through rates for brands, publishers

Instagram may arrived late as a traffic source for brands and publishers, but it’s already showing early signs of success, driving new visitors to their sites and even outperforming its parent company, Facebook. For years brands, publishers and other have tried to push people from the Facebook-owned photo-and-video-sharing app to their sites. Outside of ads and excepting a recent test with some retailers, Instagram didn’t offer much help to companies looking to use it to drive traffic. So they had to find workarounds. They put links in their Instagram bios. They scrawled short-code URLs onto their pictures. And they typed out links in their captions. Then last month Instagram finally introduced an official alternative to these hacky workarounds: the ability for verified profiles to insert links in their Instagram Stories.Almost a month after the launch, 15% to 25% of the people who see a link in an Instagram Story are swiping on it, according to a handful of brands and publishers that h…
