OnePlus has managed to retain its lost image in the market with their latest flagship – the OnePlus 3. While it satisfies every check on a modern smartphone’s must have feature list with high-end hardware and a sleek design, it also packs company’s new dedicated charging technology – Dash Charge which is based on OPPO’s VOOC and promises approximately 60% charge in about 30 minutes. Although, for most that’s nothing but marketing jargon, OnePlus has actually addressed a whole lot issues other manufacturers usually fail to acknowledge in the hunt for the best. So how different is OnePlus’ implementation and is it any better? Let’s find out
Less Heat, More Safe
The primary concern when it comes to any modern smartphone quick charger is not how much voltage or current is being released, what’s critical is how the OEM is controlling that. For achieving these elevated speeds, a controller is needed which in most cases, resides inside the handset itself. As a result, thanks to the metal bodies, that tiny device discharges a massive amount of heat which in turn makes our phones inconveniently warm. This directly impacts other components inside and results in battery and performance issues. Now, what OnePlus has done is that they have placed the controller inside the adapter a.k.a. the DASH charger. Hence, no matter how hot it gets, your OnePlus 3 is safe as sound.
Although, it is not a perfect solution to heating problems and has one huge drawback. The OnePlus 3 will only charge rapidly with the proprietary bundled charger and doesn’t support any other alternate standards like Qualcomm’s Quick Charge. So make sure you don’t forget to pack the DASH adapter while traveling or misplace it as getting an another one won’t be cheap.
Divide and Conquer
A general smartphone charging procedure involves juicing up the pack using a large amount of steady current. But with DASH, the power supply unit is treating a single battery pack as multiple separate units and charges them at constant speeds. This consequently results in a much greater pace when compared to any other common technique. OnePlus hasn’t specifically mentioned how the battery inside OnePlus 3 has been split, but to get a clear understanding – let’s assume the 3000mAh battery is broken down into 5 pieces, all of which receiving independent inputs at a rate of 1 Amp in parallel. All of which put together, allows the entire battery to get completely charged at 5 Amp. This approach, additionally, reduces the load on a single section and enhances hardware’s life expectancy.
A Healthier Affair
With decreased dissipation of heat and parallel charging, OnePlus 3 is much less prone to getting affected by internal burns and performance throttles. Moreover, the battery is uniformly receiving current which thoroughly increases the smartphone’s life expectancy. Most of the phones start show aging signs after 18 months but with OnePlus’ Dash charge, that’s less likely to happen. You can even play games or use GPS while the phone is connected to a socket and don’t have to worry about rendering problems.
It still bugs me though that OnePlus didn’t opt for a standard solution and improved it at some level. Having a dedicated power brick is definitely going to bug customers but in the end, you’re still getting a better experience overall.
