Instagram Advertising: What’s Working?

Chukcha / Shutterstock.com My work involves looking into larger trends we (at Nanigans) observe across our base of hundreds of large advertisers, primarily within the Facebook ecosystem. What’s particularly interesting about Instagram as a newer platform is that the architecture of the ad environment is similar to Facebook’s, and we’ve observed remarkably comparable performance across the two channels.Yet, as creative best practices continue to emerge for Instagram ads, some differences do present themselves. As a quick refresher, this past summer, roughly three years after its 2012 acquisition of the service, Facebook opened up Instagram’s ad API. Since then, advertisers have adopted the channel at a rapid pace.As of October, only two months following the API launch, 31 percent of all advertisers using our company’s ad automation software were spending on Instagram. This trend has largely continued through more recent months. After some earlier tests with a limited set of brand-focused …

Since 2008 Apple says it has earned developers “nearly $40 billion.” Roughly a third of that came in 2015 according to the company.Apple added that the App Store and app ecosystem have helped to create 4.5 million jobs globally, with nearly 2 million of those in the US. Those figures are attributed to a report …

HTC One A9: First Impressions – Honey, HTC Just Got Back its Design Mojo

A few years ago, HTC was pretty much THE brand when it came to design this side of Apple. The company had built a formidable reputation for itself by coming out different designs, shapes and materials – remember the slightly tilted HTC Hero or the large but still compact HTC HD? It all however seemed to get just a bit predictable after the One series began with HTC high-end phones falling into a rough template – longish with speakers on top and below the display, metal or metallic finish, and more often than not in shades of grey or white. No, it was not as if the phones were badly designed – it was just that they had started looking similar. And of course, there was the matter of there being a few too many of them, with a number of variations besides.Which is why, allegations of similarity with a famous phone (or two) notwithstanding, we were pleasantly surprised to clap eyes on the HTC One A9. Yes, we know that there are those who will go “iPhone” at the rounded metallic sides or th…

Miss Piggy Leads The Way To A New Kind Of Marketing Channel

Earlier this month, a fan of The Muppets’ Miss Piggy chatted with her via Facebook:“Can you get me a job at the network?”She immediately replied: “Send your resume to the network.”The famed Muppet then added: “Do you know the hardest part of doing ‘Up Late with Miss Piggy?’ “ That’s the fictional late night TV show she hosts in the TV series “The Muppets.”“You make it look so easy,” the fan wrote.“Yes, yes, I make the difficult look effortless,” Miss Piggy acknowledged. This repartee was one of several thousand undertaken last month to promote the Disney TV series. (After that initial stint, Miss Piggy took a brief winter vacation. She’s available again beginning today, weekdays from 10 am to noon PT, through Miss Piggy’s Facebook page or the Facebook Messenger app.)The conversation, powered by an intelligent chat-bot engine developed by Israeli company Imperson, points the way to marketing campaigns where fictional characters are active participants.About 6000 responses were created f…

The Definitive Guide To Digital Brand Lift

“And we’ll do a brand lift study,” added the seller to sweeten the digital media deal she was proposing. I was in a midtown restaurant in New York eavesdropping on the adjoining table’s conversation about a cool new type of digital media.I expected the media agency executive to respond with questions that would lead to a robust conversation of his client’s objectives and how the campaign could be measured against these. Instead, I heard, “Great, send over the paperwork.”I was depressed by this conversation, as it provided further proof of a troubling phenomenon I’ve increasingly noticed over the last 24 months. Brand effectiveness research has become a commodity — so generic as to have lost its meaning — and demoted to just another tactic in sales negotiations, not the strategic driver of digital brand advertising that it could and should be.This is incredibly dangerous for the industry, as brand marketers will hold back spending in digital without proof of the medium’s effectiveness …

Asus Zenfone Zoom to be Launched in India on January 22

Much to the shutterbugs’ delight, Asus is all ready to launch its Zenfone Zoom smartphone on January 22 and interestingly the company seems to be making it available for the Indian market before US and other key markets. The Invite from Asus reads out “The world is a big place and there are endless things to explore and experience. But the best stories are often hidden in the details and easy to overlook.” The event seems to be a first of its kind wherein folks would be invited to Taj Mahal and Asus will demonstrate the imaging capabilities of the Zenfone Zoom, live. The Zenfone Zoom was actually announced last year and it boasts about its imaging capabilities including the fact that it is the thinnest phone with 3x optical zoom. In fact the phone had been put up on sale only last month in Taiwan and although it was initially announced that the Zoom will make to the US markets first now it seems otherwise. The Zenfone Zoom comes with “most advanced photography focused smartphone” tag an…

WeChat Lets You Call Mobile Phones and Landlines, Takes on Skype and Others

In a rather significant move, WeChat has now added a feature to call mobile phones and landlines within the app, just like how one could do on Skype. The service is being branded as WeChat Out and the feature has already been rolled out in US, Hong Kong and India. The company behind WeChat, Tencent says that it will soon rollout the feature to other countries as well.WeChat pitches the service as “super-low calling rates” and “excellent call quality”, and as rightly pointed out by VentureBeat it will help the company to link customers’ credit cards to their WeChat accounts. So the feature can be accessed by tapping on the ‘+’ symbol at the top right and selecting WeChat out. The service will take some time to import your phonebook post which you can dial the number directly. The company says that it would be giving away 100 minutes of free calls to most of the numbers, but when I tried out, my account balance was nil and had to top-up to use the service. It would have been nicer if WeC…
