As Facebook Audience Network Becomes $1 Billion Biz, LiveRail Refocuses On Private Marketplaces

Facebook released new stats on the performance of the Facebook Audience Network (FAN) and a narrower focus for the company’s LiveRail business in a blog post on Thursday.FAN is the in-app advertising network that Facebook launched globally in October 2014 to give advertisers access to in-app inventory while harnessing Facebook’s data and targeting capabilities. The company says the number of apps that have joined FAN increased ten-fold from a year ago, and it’s now a $1 billion dollar business.“In Q4 we reached a $1B annual run rate for advertising spend through the Audience Network, with the bulk of that value being passed to publishers, and the remainder being recorded as net revenue for Facebook,” Alvin Bowles, Facebook head of global publisher sales and operations announced in the post. “With Audience Network, we will continue to introduce new ways for publishers to take advantage of everything that makes Facebook ads valuable to our partners: high-quality demand, people-based mar…

Forget Your Testimonials Page, 2016 Is The Year Of Reviews

2015 was an insane year for Local Search — especially in the latter half.We lost the 7-pack, and now the recent Google Plus update has removed all location information from business pages. Until Google rolls out another update to Local, your business listing is effectively your Knowledge Box and your listing on Google Maps.Reviews have always been important, and while they’ve lost a bit of the strength they used to carry in the Local algorithm, they’re still incredibly important to potential customers. Reviews started showing in isolated popups back in 2013, but now that’s the only place you can see them. Now, I’m not going to start spouting off stats about how people trust reviews from strangers or how bad reviews will hurt your business. You’re here on Search Engine Land, so you’re likely already familiar with such information. Now that location info has been pulled from Google Plus, your reviews area is a much bigger piece of the local info pie. There’s no more business description, …

The Surface Pro 4 has Competition – and it is NOT the iPad Pro!

How is this when compared to the iPad Pro?”We wish there was a way to monetize all the times we have been asked that question today. Ever since Microsoft officially released the Surface Pro 4 and Pro 3 in India today at prices close to that of the iPad Pro, the air is thick with comparisons between the tablet-ic best of Cupertino and Redmond. On the surface (pun thoroughly intended), there seem to be valid grounds for this comparison. Both the iPad Pro and the Surface Pro 4 (we will be considering the Pro 4, as it is pretty much the star of the show – there is only one variant of the older Pro 3 in the market) are large-ish tablets with displays in excess of 12 inches. Both boast very good hardware. Both come with expensive keyboards that attach magnetically to them, and both also sport styluses that allow users to scribble on them. Oh, and both cost a fair bit as well, much more than your run of the mill mid-segment notebook – the iPad Pro’s 128 GB model costs Rs 79,990, while the Su…

10 Ways To Simplify Your Local Marketing Strategy In 2016

As I scoured articles proclaiming the top trends in marketing for 2016, one thing that struck me was how many new technologies and new products were being pushed out, all in the name of bigger and better. It was a bit overwhelming. For the local business owner, marketing has become so complicated. Audiences are fragmented over hundreds of different media outlets, apps, platforms, search engines, social media sites and business listing products.Yet technology is constantly evolving the way media is accessed and consumed, and it remains critical for businesses to use technology to stay competitive. Large businesses have the resources to utilize every new martech innovation and reach out through every available social media channel. For the local business, instead of being a jack of all trades, doing a few things well may be more productive. For many, simplifying their marketing strategy may make it possible to take advantage of effective new technologies in manageable, bite-sized pieces.H…

Surviving Google’s New Policy Against Interstitial Ads

Google has spoken — and an important part of the mobile web will never be the same. At least that’s the theory, and certainly the search giant’s intention.Google sees app install interstitials — those big ads that pop up suddenly on the mobile web and monopolize all of your mobile device screen to prompt you to download an app, rather than let you keep surfing — as too annoying to users. On November 2, the company therefore put in place a new policy to discourage the ads.According to this policy, Google has since penalized mobile websites that use such interstitials by declaring these websites mobile-unfriendly. According to Google’s more detailed blog post about the policy from September:Mobile web pages that show an app install interstitial that hides a significant amount of content on the transition from the search result page will no longer be considered mobile-friendly. This does not affect other types of interstitials. As an alternative to app install interstitials, browsers pro…

Moto X Style Review: Consistency, Thy Name is Moto

Motorola’s Moto X is the flaghship series and is easily one of the favortie phones when it comes to a certain set of users who love the stock Android experience on a phone that is a good all round performer. Every year since it first came out, the Moto X has brought in something new to the game and now in 2015, Motorola doubles up the Moto X by bringing in not one, but two variants: first one that is focused on elongated battery life with decent specs while the second one that’s a massive multimedia entertainer with high end specs. This is probably got to do with the fact that the Moto X 2014 received mixed reactions in terms of battery life and camera performance, and hence Motorola has gone full guns blazing in 2015. The bigger (and better) of the two variants is what we will be talking to you about, the Moto X Style. When we said massive, we weren’t mincing words – catching up with the trend of growing screen sizes, Moto X Style comes with a 5.7” QHD IPS LCD screen packing a whoopin…

4 B2B Marketing Predictions For 2016

As we move into a new year, you read a lot about predictions. Being a CMO, I normally come up with my own, but this year, instead of consulting my crystal ball, I thought I would do something a little bit different. So a few weeks ago, I brought together marketing leaders from New Relic, Atmel, Red Hat and Linqia in a Twitter Chat (#b2bcmochat). We discussed the B2B marketing landscape and the trends and strategies that would prove popular in 2016.Panelists, as well as about a hundred marketers, shared their thoughts on the changes that are occurring. The conversation covered several topics, ranging from Account-Based Marketing (ABM) to budget and changes in your tech stack. Here are four insights that came up during our conversation:Account-Based Marketing Will ExplodeThere’s a lot of research out there that shows Account-Based Marketing (ABM) is on fire. iPhone users never had any sort of scarcity when it comes to accessories and the recently unveiled Exolens is one such accessory that is ought to make your iPhone camera better. We have seen camera attachments for the iPhone in the past but the ExoLens is born out of partnership between Fellowes and the famous lens manufacturer Zeiss, thus atleast on paper, it speaks of supremacy.A wide-angled lens, a macro lens and a telephoto lens were put on display at the CES and each one of these lenses needs to be attached to an aluminium mount which is currently compatible with iPhone 6/6 Plus and the 6s/6s Plus. The folks at Verge found out that the images taken with the lens to be undistorted and clear, the construction of the lens alao seemed to be solid unlike many other cheap stap on camera lenses. Instagram Ups Its Curation Game, Makes Spotlight Videos Permanent

Evan Lorne / Shutterstock.com Following in the footsteps of Twitter’s Moments and Snapchat’s Live Stories, Instagram is making content curation a permanent part of its user experience with video slideshows that show up on the Explore tab. As TechCrunch reported late Wednesday, Instagram is calling these “Spotlight Compilations.”The video compilations debuted this past Halloween, when users were invited to “Watch Halloween’s Best Videos.” There, Instagram’s community team had collected a series of user-uploaded videos — from both celebrities and regular folks like you and me — that played in a full-screen, slideshow format.Instagram has offered Spotlight Compilations a few other times since then, but is now making them a permanent feature on the Explore tab.An Instagram spokesperson tells us there are no plans right now to show Spotlight Compilations in the main feed. 5 Key Challenges for Netflix in India

CES 2016 was pretty boring for me all along till the time Netflix took the stage. The company announced a massive expansion which would see it operate in 130 new countries across the globe. India happens to be one of them. The subscription prices of Netflix in India is very similar to their US pricing, although the content availability and overall experience might not be the same.Despite all the fanfare, Netflix faces quite a lot of difficulties in India, some of which we’ll be detailing in this post-1. Internet speeds & FUPNetflix’s popularity in the US has been based on ever increasing internet speeds in terms of both wireless and wired broadband. At least one third of Americans are on a cellular carrier that provides them with unlimited data plans. These carriers are Sprint and T-Mobile which provide unlimited data without any speed restriction unless users cross a 22-25GB threshold and happen to be latched on to a congested cell site. None of the Indian carriers provide truly …
