Top 10 YouTube Ads In December: Clash Of Clans Dominates With A Combined 63M Views

Of the top ten most popular video ads on YouTube last month, four of them belonged to Supercell’s “Clash of Clans” video game, including the No. 1 spot which was the first-ever 360-degree video to break into the top ten. With Clash of Clans ads taking the No. 1, No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 spots, and Boom Beach’s “Dr. T” ad ranking No. 9, Supercell owned half of the list – a mighty achievement for the video gaming company, whose spots featured Oscar winner Christopher Waltz.Supercell’s five ads generated a combined 69.2 million video views in December – Clash of Clans spots earned 63 million views total and Boom Beach earned 6.2 million. It’s No. 1 ranking ad, “Experience a Virtual Reality Raid” generated 30.2 million views alone, double the No. 2 video ad, which was also a Supercell spot.Other brands to edge in between Supercell’s rankings included GoPro, Volvo Trucks, and Victoria’s Secret. Google earned two spots in the top ten with its “2015 Year in Search” and “Lightsaber Escape: an e…

How Apple Could Play Spoiler For The Search Ad Business

With the start of a new year, it’s a fitting time to reflect on all that happened in the previous year and look ahead to what this next one might have in store for us.Thinking about what developments could have the greatest impact on paid search in 2016, for better or worse, a few possibilities jump to mind: Google significantly expanding its foray into audience-based targeting for search; Yahoo abandoning Bing Ads entirely for Google ads or for its own Gemini program; Google finally throwing its full weight behind the buy button/Purchases with Google program.Another possibility that has been simmering for some time is whether or not Apple will make a move that shakes up the entire search industry. With so much volume flowing through their devices, there are a number of ways they could do this.Ad Blocking In iOSSome feared that the introduction of ad blocking app capabilities in iOS would hurt mobile marketing efforts — but to date, any impact to paid search programs has been largely …

Cut The Fat: How To Reduce Wasted Ad Spend In Your AdWords Account

AdWords is a great place to waste money. Google makes it so easy — a few minutes of effort, and you are well on your way to giving them your whole marketing budget.Fortunately, all that money doesn’t have to go to waste. With a bit of finagling, it’s relatively easy to figure out which search terms have value and which ones are money pits — if you know what you’re doing. To make things easy, I’ve boiled this analysis down into a simple four-step process. To show how this process works in practice, I’ll also use a recent client case study to illustrate each step. The ClientThis client provides a fantastic example of how much money you can waste on AdWords without realizing it. After running this analysis on their account, it became clear that they were wasting $50,000/month on ads that never produced a single conversion! The client had been managing their PPC accounts in house for years, and these accounts were actually generating quite a few leads. Unfortunately, despite their high custo…

Emarketer estimates that display ad spend in the US will reach $32.17 billion in 2016 compared to $29.24 billion in search spend. If reached, this milestone will have taken a bit longer than originally anticipated. Marriage Equality, Healthcare & Low Unemployment: How Search Marketers Can Make A Difference This Tax Season

As the marketing world recovers from the Hunger Games-eque madness that was the holiday retail season, we know this rest period is but temporary. The next melee for paid search marketing is now upon us, in the form of tax season. Many businesses that specialize in taxes or services that support tax filing have a similar marketing calendar to retail, in that most of the annual income happens over a span of three months. This puts a lot of pressure on a $9.3 billion industry to get it right. This year, more than many recent years, current events are shaping new tax requirements, giving marketers an opportunity to highlight specific areas of assistance. For example, with the passage of the Marriage Equality Act, many same-sex couples will be filing jointly for the first time. This is in addition to the over 2 million couples that already tie the knot in the US each year. Could you be the one to answer their questions when they do a search about this?Let’s take a closer look at the events sh…

The Whole Nine Yards: What The NFL Can Teach Marketers About Brand Engagement

dean bertoncelj / Shutterstock.com The pure unbridled energy that comes from watching your team score the winning touchdown now extends far past your home team’s stadium walls, thanks to social media.Whether you’re sitting on the sidelines, camped out in your favorite bar or screaming at the TV in the comfort of your own home — the digital world is at your fingertips, sparking conversation and incentivizing you to trash-talk your rivals. While NFL teams have organically built their fan base over generations, some teams go the whole nine yards to transcend their own communities. Joe Namath made the Jets a household name; The Steel Curtain invokes the Steelers’ defensive mastery of the ’70s for any football fan; and The Catch resonates far beyond the Golden Gate Bridge.Creating a sense of community and encouraging interaction with the team and other fans are key factors for NFL teams looking to keep their brands more relevant than the rest of the league. Only one can take home the Super B…

Yesmail Report: Email Marketers Need To Walk Before They Can Run

Email marketers have big ambitions for leveraging this popular channel — but many still have a long ways to go.That’s the key takeaway in a new report from Yesmail, out today. Entitled “The 2016 Yesmail Channel Report,” it is the first such study from this email marketing provider. (The above is an image from the report.)The survey based its findings on responses from 200 retailers at the National Retail Federation’s 2015 Shop.org conference last fall — a relatively small sample, but potentially enough to outline the general state of affairs.Nearly a third of surveyed retailers said that integrating email with other channels is a top goal for this year. Multi-channel integration allows emails — generally considered the most effective and widely used marketing medium — to draw on the complementary behaviors and additional audiences found in other media, like social networks, mobile apps or websites. But, according to the survey, nearly half of brands do not even collect email addresses …

Google Play Services Will be Launched in China this Year Says Chen Xudong, Lenovo’s Mobile Head

If you are a Chinese Android user here is some good news for you, Lenovo’s head of mobile division, Chen Xudong has confirmed that Google is indeed working on launching the Play Services in China. The move seems to be propelled by the fact that China has one of the biggest smartphone user base worldwide. Although the rest of the world is pretty much used to the Play Store which comes pre installed in almost all of the Android smartphones, Chinese users in particular have been deprived of the same. The Play Store in China has not been banned per se but Google doesn’t allow users to buy paid or premium apps. This has lead the developers to ignore the Chinese market and on the other hand even if the phone was preinstalled with Google Play Store the users in China would only be able to download free apps. That being said, Google is yet to back up the confirmation and even Xudong preferred not to go in details about the same. The bottom line is that Chinese users are close to getting full ac…

Total Holiday E-Commerce: $69 Billion, Mobile $12.7 Billion — comScore

Mobile devices dominated the holiday shopping season, outpacing the PC in driving traffic to e-commerce sites and being used as shopping companions in physical stores. In addition, mobile commerce also grew significantly from 2014 (59 percent), though perhaps not as much as one might have anticipated.According to online measurement firm comScore, total digital commerce (mobile and PC) reached $69.08 billion for period the between November 1 and December 31. The firm had forecast digital shopping revenues of $70.1 billion for the two month holiday shopping season.Mobile exceeded the comScore holiday forecast but desktop spending fell about $2 billion below the firm’s estimates. The single largest online shopping day was once again Cyber Monday (November 30), bringing in roughly $2.3 billion in receipts.Much has been made of online retail surging and traditional retail suffering. But that “either/or” analysis is simplistic. Among online-only players it’s really only Amazon and a couple …
