How To Localize Google Search Results

In late November 2015, Google removed the location search filter from the (shrinking) list of search tools available to refine queries. As search results have become increasingly localized, this significantly limits consumers’ ability to see results for any other location than their own.Whether you’re a search pro who needs to see clients’ search results as returned within different localities or a normal consumer who wants to see results localized to your next travel destination, the removal of this search tool significantly limits the ability to see the SERP world beyond your own city or country.Today’s post will provide ways to show localized search results despite Google’s removal of the search tool. What Does Google Say?As Google told Search Engine Land, the company maintains that the location search filter “was getting very little usage,” so they removed it. Could it be they removed the search tool but retained the ability via an advanced search screen or something similar? A qui…

Discovering Opportunities To Drive Your Mobile Web & App Optimization Strategy

With the steady rise of mobile search, SEO practitioners these days need to consider how to optimize both their websites and apps for mobile search visibility.Google’s mobile-friendly algorithm update, released in April 2015, gave a boost in mobile search results to pages with good mobile user experiences. Along those lines, Google has sought to increase the visibility of app content within mobile search results through app indexing. Thus, it’s key to have a strategic approach to our mobile optimization efforts — both on our websites and apps. The now more mature mobile web and app optimization tools make this analysis possible, and straightforward, too. For example, some of the tools that I use (which I’ll be discussing in this post) are as follows:For cross-web-app mobile competitive analysis: SimilarWeb.For mobile app analysis: Mobile ActionSearchManSensor Tower and AppTweak. For mobile web search analysis: SEMrushSISTRIXOnPage.org, SEOmonitor and URL Profiler.Use the tools a…

How To Uncover SEO Content Marketing Ideas With Google Search Analytics

When Google first launched Webmaster Tools (now known as Google Search Console), I was more than skeptical of its value. I had a hard time buying into XML sitemaps as a must-have SEO asset, and the original results for keyword data were never close to what could be found in web reporting tools.Fast forward to the new year, and we all know Google Search Console has evolved significantly. One of the key areas where the platform has become essential is in the Search Analytics dashboard. With nearly all organic keyword data blocked due to “not provided,” this dashboard has become more important in helping SEO campaign management. And while Search Analytics data is still not reliable for connecting individual keywords to direct leads, the opportunity to build out content marketing campaigns through keyword research is significant. In this column, I am going to showcase three tactical applications of Search Analytics data analysis that can be applied to make more meaningful, SEO-centric conten…

T-Mobile Binge On and Net Neutrality: There’s No Single Answer

There has been a lot of fuss in recent times over T-Mobile’s recently unveiled program, Binge ON. EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) has said that Binge ON stands in violation of Net Neutrality. T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere and CFO, Mike Sievert have voraciously defended Binge ON.
Image source: Digital TrendsWhat’s Binge ON and what’s the fuss?Binge ON is basically a zero-rated video program/platform that T-Mobile launched as part of its long running un-carrier initiative. Under this program, video streaming companies such as Hulu and Netflix that partner up with T-Mobile can have the data consumed by their streaming apps exempted from users’ data caps. Videos from Hulu/Netflix and other partners that have enrolled in T-Mobile’s Binge ON is “optimized” to 480p resolution. There’s no kind of financial transaction between Binge ON partners and T-Mobile. In order to be a part of Binge ON, partners need to meet certain technical guidelines.Videos from companies that aren’t part of T-Mobil…

Think Social’s NSFW? Not Any More: How Employee Engagement Really Works

Still think social media isn’t suitable for the workplace? In an increasingly social world, I am so surprised at the number of brand marketers I speak to that still haven’t figured out how to leverage their biggest assets — their employees — to be brand champions.Though many companies would prefer to minimize employees’ time or activity on social media, if done correctly, employee engagement programs don’t have to be time-wasters or threats to the company. In fact, employee advocacy can be a powerful tool for a brand that understands how to use it and knows how to guide its employees to do so for the company’s benefit. When employees are active online, they have the opportunity to contribute to their companies’ successes. Corporations are realizing that they have a built-in army of online advocates at their disposal and that a community of socially active employees — brand ambassadors, if you will — can provide free publicity for the messages that brands are trying to communicate. The qu…

2015’s Missed Marketing Predictions And Opportunities

It’s that time of the year again when industry and subject matter experts alike are predicting what will happen in the coming year in media and advertising.Rather than look ahead to 2016, I thought it would be worthwhile to take a look back and talk about some of the predictions and trends that did not happen in 2015.Here are some of the hot predictions the experts were making at this time last year — predictions that didn’t quite live up to the anticipation. The Rise Of Programmatic TVOne of the big promises and hopes of 2015 was the rise of addressable TV and programmatic TV ad buys. Unfortunately, people — not smarter algorithms — are still buying most of today’s TV spots. We ended 2015 with the technologies and capabilities in place, so maybe 2016 will be the year.Apple Will Revolutionize TVBetween all the rumors and leaked details about potential deals with networks, Apple fans and advertisers alike were holding their collective breath for Apple to revolutionize the TV model.Given…

The Google Dance is back.Don’t know what the Google Dance is? Sure, it’s the nickname given to when Google’s search results dance around after an algorithm update. It’s happening again in conjunction with our SMX West search marketing conference that runs through March 1 to March 3 in San Jose. The History Of The Google DanceFor more background, you can read Danny Sullivan’s announcement about the return of the Google Dance and its connection to the search marketing industry.Google also still hosts a collection of photos from the first Google Dance held in 2002, which includes many of Google execs in their younger days mixing among search marketers. Smartflix is a New and Effortless Way to Unlock Global Netflix Content

After several years, Netflix finally made it to India. while I was initially carried away by the move, after playing around with Netflix here, it dawned upon me that a staggering number of titles didn’t make it to India. After searching for several TV shows on Netflix, I was surrounded by a cloud of disappointment. Most of the famous American shows like Lost and Californication were excluded from the Indian Netflix and this just made the deal go sour. Same is the case if you are accessing Netflix anywhere outside of US.Earlier, most of us were accessing Netflix by using a VPN and this way we could enjoy all the content served in the US or UK. While we can still continue to do so, here is a more effortless and effective way of accessing the global catalogue. Smartflix.io is a service which unlocks ALL the content on Netflix, irrespective of the country you reside in. The app is still in beta and as of now it is free, but once it exits beta, users will be charged a onetime fee of $7.99.…

Solve your Travel Adapter Charging Woes with Mogics Power Donut and Bagel

Traveling with gadgets has never been a merry affair – the need to bundle several travel adapters and the myriad of wires connecting the same becomes quiet an ordeal. Invariably one also needs to carry a power strip in order to accommodate all the charging adapters and even this comes with a caveat, most of the adapters are so large that the neighboring port(s) becomes inaccessible.A new project on KickStarter wants to solve this problem by using a Donut – well, a Donut shaped power strip that can charge a bunch of travel adapters simultaneously. Mogics Donut can accommodate five US AC socket and two fast charging USB ports whereas the Mogics Bagel boasts of 4 Universal AC sockets plus one US AC socket and 2 fast charging USB ports. The best part is the size of the Donut and the Bagel, both are small enough to be dropped in the packet and utility wise they are better than the bulky old power strip which would gobble up a large space in your travel bag. The Mogics Donut and the Bagel ar…

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 with Snapdragon 650 Announced in China, Coming to India Next Month

Xiaomi announced today that they will be bringing the recently announced Redmi Note 3 to India, which is sort of a surprise considering it runs on the Mediatek Helio X10, and it would have been the first Xiaomi device with Mediatek processor ever since Ericsson sued Xiaomi in India last year. As it turns out, Xiaomi will be bringing the Qualcomm Snapdragon variant of Redmi Note 3 to India, which has just been made official in China. The new Redmi Note 3 will run the 1.8GHz Snapdragon 650 (previously known as Snapdragon 618) with X8 LTE (cat 7) and VoLTE support. Rest of the things almost remain the same. The SD version has got a slight bump in primary camera which is now 16MP (as against 13MP) while the secondary camera stays at 5MP. While the Helio X10 version is priced at RMB 899, the Snapdragon 650 variant of Redmi Note 3 is priced at RMB 999, which is just a RMB 100 premium.Other specifications include 4050mAh battery, 2GB or 3GB RAM depending upon 16GB or 32GB ROM. The GPU is the …

How Genuine People Behave: Make No Mistake from Next Time

“Don’t tell your problems to people: eighty percent don’t care, and the other twenty percent are glad you have them.”– Lou HoltzWe humans are poor critics of someone’s true personality and we are quick to judge someone based on their outer demeanour, instead of their true selves. It is only so hard to differentiate one from the other because there is only a fine line between being truly nice and fake magnanimity. Differentiating the genuine souls from the pretentious ones is pretty hard and we often end up being close to people who don’t truly care about you or your issues. Fake people have this kind of air around them that makes them appear to be genuine and no one can really tell the difference!Identifying and keeping the genuine people, the people who seriously care about your well-being is essential for a happy life. Be it in your business, educational life, friendships and life in general, keeping the genuine souls closer to you will save you from a lot of pain and trouble. So, a…

Allstate’s Newest @Mayhem Effort Depicts The Dark Side Of DIY, With Stories Unearthed Online

Allstate’s campaigns as of late have revolved around its “Mayhem” character, a snarky know-it-all who seems to always be present when things go wrong — sometimes terribly wrong. Allstate’s message, of course, is that it will be around to help you pick up the pieces if you’ve purchased its insurance. The company’s apparently decided that the imaginary scenarios it’s been depicting thus far aren’t realistic enough, so, in its latest installment, it’s sought out real-life tales about DIY projects gone wrong. The idea behind the “Mayhem DIY” effort is that one of the most dangerous sources of trouble in people’s homes is their own often misguided attempts to fix or build things. Rather than soliciting real-life contributions from the public, though, it scoured the internet itself, eventually selecting four stories about home “improvement” projects that turned out to be anything but improvements. It’s Allstate’s clever nod to one of the most popular genres of online videos — the “How To” DIY…
